United States Patent 3,461,706 TOP STRIPPER GUIDES Roy R. Sloan, Blasdell, N.Y., assignor to Fox Industries, Inc., a corporation of Ohio Filed Aug. 9, 1966, Ser. No. 571,337 Int. Cl. B21b 39/16 US. Cl. 72-250 4 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A top stripper guide is provided for rolling mills having a housing and an upper and lower work roll defining between them a pass line, said guide comprising a guide pla e lying above the pass line adjacent the upper work roll, a contour edge on said plate adjacent the work roll, a guide shaft vertically adjustably mounted on said guide plate, hanger means on the housing supporting the ends of the guide shaft and locking adjusting means between the shaft and hanger means for adjusting the angle of said guide plate with respect to the pass line.
This invention relates to top stripper guides and particularly to a guide for eliminating the problem of head end turn up on strip metal leaving a reduction mill.
One common problem in rolling strip is that the head end of the strip, upon leaving the rolls of any reduction mill capable of reducing the thickness of slab metal into a sheet, tends to turn up and if not returned to level creates cobbles and Wrecks in succeeding mill stands. This problem is one well recognized in the rolling mill art and one for which a simple, effective and safe solution has long been sought. Many solutions have been proposed and used but without a completely satisfactory solution. For example heavy rest bars with counte weights and links suspended over the pass line have been used. However, if for example, in a mill using a looper, the loop gets out of bounds the counter Weight, rest bars and water pipes are frequently dislodged resulting in their being carried into the next succeeding mill causing costly damage to the mill and lost production time.
The present invention provides a top stripped guide which eliminates these problems of the prior art and successfully prevents the head ends of the stri leaving a mill from turning up.
In a preferred embodiment of my invention, I provide a guide plate lying above the pass line and adjustably spaced above the same, said plate having a bevel along the edge adjacent and parallel to the top work roll adapted to ride against the roll just above the pass line, a transverse upstanding enclosed channel fixed to the top of said guide plate adjacent and parallel to the edge remote from the roll, guide shaft vertically adjustable within said enclosed channel, hanger means on the roll housing receiving opposite ends of the guide shaft and locking adjustor means between said shaft and hanger means for adjusting the angle of the guide plate with respect to the plane of the pass line. Preferably, I also provide spray hangers on the enclosed channel adapted to carry a spray pipe for the 3,461,706 Patented Aug. 19, 1969 mill. The locking adjusting means may take the form of non-revolving intermeshing inions on the guide shaft and hanger means.
In the foregoing general description I have set out certain purposes, objects and advantages of my invention. Other objects, purposes and advantages of my invention will be apparent from the following description and the accompanying drawings in which:
FIGURE 1 is an elevational view of a rolling mill stand provided with my invention; and
FIGURE 2 is an exploded isometric view of a top stripper guide according to my invention.
Referring to the drawings, I have illustrated a rolling mill housing 10, having working rolls 11 and 12 defining a pass line 13 A guide plate 14 is held above the pass line 13 by a guide shaft 15 passing through enclosed channel 16 and suspended in hanger blocks 17 fixed to each end housing 10. The guide shaft 15 is provided with opening 18 adapted to receive pins 19 passing through opening 20 in the channel 16 whereby the vertical position of the guide plate 14 with respect to pass line 13 may be adjusted. Each hanger block 17 is provided with an arm 21 of square cross section adapted to receive a locking pinion 22 having a square hole fitting onto the arm 21. Each end of guide shaft 15 is provided with a fixed lock pinion 23 adapted to interengage with pinion 22 to adjust the angular positoin of the guide plate 14 with respect to pass line 13. The ends of the guide shaft are carried in bearing blocks 24 held in the hanger blocks 17. Spray hangers 25 may be provided on the enclosed channel 16 for the purpose of carrying spray pipes for carrying coolant for the mill.
In use on a mill the vertical position of the end of guide plate 14 farthest from the exit side of the mill is adjusted by moving channel 16 vertically with respect to guide shaft 15 and inserting pins 19 through the appropriate o enings 29. The position of the beveled edge of guide plate 14 nearest to the mill is fixed by changing the relative position of interengaging lock pinions 22 and 23 thereby changing the angular position of plate 14. In this manner a narrow passage may be formed between the pass line 13 on the bottom and guide plate 14 on the top thus eliminating any possibility of the head ends of strip leaving the mill turning up along the Work roll and doubling into the next succeeding mill.
In the foregoing specification I have set out certain preferred embodiments of my invention. It will be understood that thi invention may be otherwise embodied within the scope of the following claims.
I claim:
1. In a rolling mill having a housing and an upper and lower work roll defining between them a pass line, the improvement comprising a guide plate lying above the pass line adjacent and independent of the upper work roll, a contour edge on said plate adjacent the upper work roll, a guide shaft vertically adjustably mounted on said guide plate, hanger means on the housing supportingly receiving the ends of said guide shaft and locking adjusting means between said shaft and hanger means for adjusting the angle of said guide plate with respect to the pass line.
2. The improvement as claimed in claim 1 wherein References Cited the locking adjusting means are interengaging locking UNITED STATES PATENTS pinions, OI1 fixed on thfi guide Shaft and One fiXCd n Pisarcik the hanger means- 2,006,729 7/1935 Brauer 72-428 X 3.
