Description

United States Patent 3,460,958 PROCESS FOR COATING A SURFACE WITH A TEXTURED DECORATIVE COATING Otto Schmidle, Gorwihl, Baden, Germany, assignor to Peter F. Moeritz, Brecksville, Ohio N0 Drawing. Filed Nov. 5, 1965, Ser. No. 506,574 Int. Cl. B44d 1/12; B44c 1/08; C09d 3/26 US. Cl. 1174 1 Claim ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to coating materials and more particularly to decorative and protective coatings and processes for making and using the same for finishing walls, ceilings and other surfaces.
A general object of this invention is to provide a new and improved coating material for a decorative and protective coating for walls, ceilings, composition and other types of building boards, panels and tile, and the like, to provide a new and improved process and method for making and for using a decorative and protective coating for walls, ceilings, composition and other types of building boards, panels, tile, and the like.
Another general object of this invention is to provide a new and improved decorative and protective coating material for walls, ceilings and other surfaces, having a cellulose base and capable of application by a plurality of methods as well as new and improved processes for making and using the same.
Still other objects of this invention include the provision of a new and improved decorative and protective coating material for walls, ceilings, composition and other types of building boards, panels, tile, and the like, which has a cellulose base; which may be applied or adapted to be applied by a plurality of methods including, inter alia, by a brush, roller, troweling, spackling and flocking; which is extremely inexpensive and economical to manufacture and use; which is easily and readily manufactured; which utilizes common agricultural products as a source of cellulose for body; which may be provided in a wide, universal range of colors and shades; which may be applied with a vehicle as a wet coating material or without a vehicle as a dry coating material; which uses straw as a body; which may be applied to composition and other types of preformed building boards, tiles, panels and the like; which may be used with a wide range of vehicles and adhesives; which is stable and easily stored and shipped; which is flexible; which resists cracking and chipping; and, which has great facility for covering and hiding cracks, and the like, in the surface being coated.
Still further objects of this invention include the provision of a new and improved method of making a decorative and protective coating material for walls, ceilings, composition and other types of building boards, tiles and panels, and the like; which is efficient and effective in use; which does not require elaborate machinery or skilled help; which is inexpensive; and, which provides a stable, easily stored decorative and protective coating material.
Further objects of this invention include the provision of a new and improved method and process for coating walls, ceiling, composition and other types of building boards, tiles, panels, and the like, and other surfaces with a decorative and protective coating; which is simple and effective in use and operation; which is easily used;
Patented Aug. 12, 1969 which permits application of the coating material by a wide range of methods such as brushing, rolling, troweling, spackling, flocking, etc.; and, which provides a new and improved decorative and protective coating.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a new and improved decorative and protective coating for walls, ceilings, surfaces and composition and other types of building boards, tiles and panels, and the like, and a new and improved method and process of making and using such coatings obtaining one or more of the objects and advantages set forth above.
These and other objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent from the following description of preferred forms thereof.
Protective and decorative coatings embodying and obtaining the objects and advantages of this invention are prepared according to this invention by cutting, shredding or comminuting straw, or similar cellulose material, into short pieces, preferably to a length not exceeding about one-quarter inch, and preferably in assorted lengths, if desired, of from about one-sixteenth to about one-quarter inch long. Wheat or barley straw is preferably used for this purpose since it is softer and more readily obtains all of the objects and advantages of this invention.
The shredded straw is then screened or sieved to remove long or large pieces. After screening the shredded straw, or other material used, is dyed or colored, either by mixing and stirring With an oil color of predetermined color and shade until the straw is colored as desired, or by mixing with a dry color of predetermined color and shade and linseed oil, or the like, until coloring, as desired, is completed.
The colored straw comprises the body of the decorative and protective coating embodying this invention and obviously, if natural straw coloring is desired, for example, the coloring may be omitted.
When coloring is complete, the mixture is dried and then, if necessary, ground, shredded and screened to remove any large particles or agglomerations resulting fiom the coloring step and to insure that the body particle size is within a desired predetermined range, preferably as set forth above.
The coating material is then readily and easily stored, shipped, sold and otherwise handled in this dried colored state. Since there is nothing to settle or deteriorate the material may be stored indefinitely, within the meaning of the art. And, if desired, the material of a. plurality of colors and/or shades of color may be mixed together to provide a finished product or coating of a plurality of hues and colors mixed together in a random pattern.
When it is desired to apply the decorative and protective coating of and according to this invention, the colored material, as desired, is admixed with a suitable vehicle such as varnish, wheat paste, etc. to a desired or predetermined consistency in accordance with the method and means by which the user desires to apply the coating to the surface to be coated.
The coating material, with vehicle admixed therewith, may be applied with a paint brush, roller, trowel, putty knife, or the like.
Alternatively, the surface to-be coated may be coated with a vehicle, of the type set forth above, and the body material, of desired color, flocked, sprinkled or dusted thereon. The coating material will then be adhered to the surface to be coated by the vehicle already coated thereon. This method flakes more but in certain applications and for certain effects is advantageous or desirable.
Obviously the texture of the applied coating may be varied by varying the length of straw or body material used.
Texture may also be varied by the choice of vehicle,
by mixing straws or body material of different lengths and by the method of application.
The protective and decorative coating embodying and made and used according to this invention is water resistant and can be treated to make it weather resistant or to give it a hard surface, as by coating with lacquer.
It is inexpensive, flexible so as to resist chipping and cracking, and has good hiding power for covering cracks and other defects in the surface being coated.
Furthermore straw or body material prepared according to this invention may be mixed with ordinary paint, and the like, to. provide a protective and decorative coating, especially for covering cracks or other old surfaces of the nature described above.
Modifications and changes to the preferred forms of the invention disclosed herein may occur to those skilled in the art who come to understand the principles and precepts thereof. Accordingly, the scope of the patent to be issued hereon should not be limited to the forms of the invention herein specifically described but by the advance by which the invention has promoted the art.
I claim:
1. A process for coating a surface with a decorative coating comprising the steps of cutting shredded straw into pieces of from about one-sixteenth inch to about one-quarter inch in length, coloring said shredded straw 4 pieces by admixing the same with a coloring dye and an oil material, drying said colored straw pieces, mixing said straw pieces with varnish or wheat paste to form a mixture and applying said mixture to a surface to provide a textured decorative coating.
