UNITED STATES PATENT Ortuce.
IRVIN 'BnssE, or NEWBURYPORT, MASSACHUSETTS.
KEY-RING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 345,401 dated July 13, 1886.
Application filed March 22, 1886. Serial No. 196,077.
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, IRVIN Bnssn, of N ewburyport, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rings for Holding Keys and other Articles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification in explaining its nature.
The invention comprises a curved metal ring having its ends extended inward to form an opening, through which the keys or articles to be secured thereby may be passed, which ends are provided with'devices for securing or holding them together in a manner to prevent their lateral play or movement in relation to each other.
The invention further consists in various details of construction, all of which will be hereinafter described.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a View in perspective of the complete device. Fig. 2 is a section upon the line a :0 ofFig. 1. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are views illustrating the manner of constructing the device. Figs. 6 and 7 show modified forms of the invention. Fig. 8 is a section upon the line 3 y of Fig. 6, and Fig.9 is a'seotion upon the line 2 zof-Fig. 7. Fig. 10 represents a modified form of the invention.
I prefer to use, in making my invention, iron or steel wire, either square, rectangular, or round in cross-section; and in the process of manufacture I first cut the wire into blanks of the proper length. (See Fig. 3.) I then flatten one end of the blank, as represented in Fig. 4.. This provides me with the sections or wings a, which I subsequently turn to aposition tobring them parallel to eachother and at right angle to the remainder of the end, to provide a recess or socket, a, for the reception of the other end, of, of the blank, which may be somewhat flattened and pointed, or otherwise shaped,to enter the recess or holding-cavity a, formed, as above stated, by the wings or flanges a. The blank, being thus shaped, is bent or curved, as represented in the drawings, and the end sections, a a, bent downward and inward, so as to bring the end a of the section (0* within the recess a of the section a,
(No model.)
In Figs. 6 and 8 I have represented aslightly modified form of obtaining this result, which consists in forming a hole or recess in the end of the part a, extending entirely through the same, into which the end a of the section (0* may enter; and in Figs. 7 and 9 I have shown another modification, which consists, substantially, in forming the flanges or recesses for receiving and holding the section a, somewhat above the ends, and so that the ends a a. of both sections a a may be turned outward, as therein represented, and afford means by which the keys or other articles can be readily removed from the ring, as well as placed thereon.
In Fig. 10 Ihave shown the locking hole or recess a, obtained by bending the end of the wire forming the ring back upon itself, the space between the turned-over end and the portion of the Wire or ring against which it is brought in contact forming a depression or recess, which receives and holds the other end of the wire or ring. This recess or depression may be enlarged, if desired, in suitable dies, or by arranging a loop or opening immediately above the bend in the wire.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. An improved key-ring,comprising abody or ring having sections or ends a a, of substantially the same length, bent inward, as described, to form a mouth or opening to the ring, of the character specified, adapted to be separated by the pressure given in placing a key upon the ring, one of which sections or rims is provided with a recess or groove, a, for receiving and holding the other section or end, thereby locking the two ends and preventing their lateral movement, substantially as described.
2. The improved key-ring, comprising a body or ring having the sections a a bent inward in relation to the remainder of the ring, as. specified, one of which has a recess or groove for holding the other, and the ends a a, bent outward or away from each other, all substantially as set forth.
IRVIN BESSE.
