United States Patent O IMPREGNATING AND COATING COMPOSITIONS AND ARTICLES AND PRODUCTS TREATED THEREWITH George A. Pritchard, deceased, late of Atlantic Beach, Fla., by Nelle W. Cl. 260-22 5 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to liquid coating and/or impregnating compositions of matter and products or objects of manufacture coated and/or impregnated therewith. More specifically, it relates to liquid (as water, for example) resistant compositions and products or objects containing the same, in the sense that containing means that the products or objects are coated and/or impregnated therewith. For example, the products or objects may be socalled laminated and corrugated paper boards used, by way of example, in the production of containers for foodstuffs, materials to be protected from air and/or moisture exteriorly thereof and from damage caused by other means.
Referring to laminated and corrugated paper boards as examples of products or objects of manufacture which may contain liquid-resistant compositions of matter, the adhesive which is employed in securing together the laminae thereof, is frequently softened by the application of liquid-resistant compositions to the boards, thus causing the laminae to peel or separate.
An important object of this invention is to provide liquid-resistant compositions of matter, for application to laminated and corrugated paper board, which will not cause softening of the adhesives generally employed in bonding together the laminae of laminated and corrugated paper board. A further important object is to provide such paper board containing the same.
An aspect of this invention is that some effective waterresistant compositions of matter, when applied to products or objects which must be scored and folded and which compositions dry thereon, cause the same to become so brittle that they crack or separate at the score lines or folds.
Another important object of this invention is to provide liquid-resistant compositions of matter which, when applied to sheet-like products or objects and which dry thereon, permit scoring and/or folding of the sheets without causing cracking or separating of the same, yet the novel compositions do render the sheets stronger than if the compositions were not added. Products and objects formed of folded or corrugated sheets containing the liquid-resistant compositions will not tend to crack or separate at the folds, and the laminae will not separate in folding.

The use of parafiin wax as a water-resistant composition has been known for many years, but its lack of strength and stability under heat has rendered it generally undesirable as an addition to a modern water-resistant composition. However, there has been provided a parafiin waxcontaining composition of matter in which the parafiin wax content thereof has been rendered stable by the addition of a soya component to the composition. The objects of the invention also include the provision of products and objects containing the paraflin wax-soya additive liquidresistant composition of matter.
A further important object of the invention is to provide liquid-resistant compositions of matter to which mineral spirits may be added, as diluents or partial diluents yet the addition will not render the mixture explosive or flammable.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following detailed description of the invention.
The liquid-resistant compositions of matter of this invention comprise, as essential ingredients, soybean derivatives in solution, parafiin wax in kerosene solution, or kerosene alone, and liquid anoinic dialkylolamine compositions. The compositions of matter as above may be diluted with mineral spirits and/or water, by way of example.
For the soybean derivatives, soybean oil alkyd resin, sometimes called soya alkyd, is preferred, dissolved in mineral spirits for example. A suitable commercial product contains substantially 33 /3 by volume mineral spirits to 66 /3 soybean oil alkyd resin.
The parafiin wax may be the ordinary commercial soft scale wax, which may be dissolved in kerosene, at between and 212 F.
The kerosene is preferably the grade used in oil-burning stoves and furnaces.
The liquid anionic-dialkylolamide detergent composition is those described in United States Reissue Patent No. 23,840, dated June 15, 1954.
The use of soft water at substantially room temperature when the compositions of matter are diluted is preferred.
The mineral spirits may be of any of the number of well-known narrow-boiling range fractions of petroleum with boiling points generally between 200 and 300 F. and recognized as thinners.
The soybean oil alkyd resin provides liquid-resistant properties to the compositions of matter and, in addition, it imparts stability to the paraflin wax, whereby the latter is freed of the undesirable characteristics as set out above, yet has its good water-resistant qualities.
The liquid anionic dialkanolamide detergent composition addition provides a stabilized water emulsion when the parafiin-kerosene solution is incorporated with the water, which dilutes the mineral spirits content, so that the mixture of the compositions of matter with, and despite the mineral spirits, provides a non-flammable composition.
It has been discovered that the compositions of matter of this invention do not cause softening of the adhesives generally employed in securing together the laminae of laminated and corrugated paper board.
The liquid-resistant compositions of matter may be marketed without the addition of the mineral spirits, which may be added by the consumer.
A preferred formula of the liquid-resistant compositions of matter of the invention is:
Soybean oil alkyd resin solution gallons 1 Kerosene do 8 Paraflin ounces 32 Liquid anionic dialkylolamide detergent composition ounces l6 Soybean oil alkyd resin solution gallons 1 Kerosene do 4 Liquid anionic-dialkylolamide detergent composition ....ounces 2 Upon mixing, these ingredients are melted together by heating to substantially 130 F To the above may be added from 19 to 20 gallons water, preferably pure soft water.
For use, to the above may be mixed from 19 to 20 gallons mineral spirits.
A general formula is as follows:
Soybean oil alkyd resin solution gallons 1 Paraflin-kerosene solution do 5-8 /z Liquid anioniodialkylolamide detergent composition ounces.. 2-16 To the above melted mixture may be added:
Water gallons 19-20 Mineral spirits do 19-20 These mixtures may be used in treating conventional laminated or corrugated paper board to provide good liquid-resistant qualities thereto, by dipping the paper board therein by an up-and-down motion with the flutes preferably substantially vertical, for from to seconds, and drying. It may be treated also by employing the apparatus illustrated and described in US. Patent No. 3, 267,902, dated Aug. 23, 1966. The drying time for the coated and/ or impregnated paper board would, of course, vary due to the weight and thickness of the board and whether the board is coated and/or impregnated. The degree of heat may be as high as 400 F. for short intervals and a lower temperature for more extended periods.
What is claimed is:
1. A liquid coating and impregnating liquid-resistant composition of matter adapted to be mixed with a diluent, said composition comprising soybean oil alkyd resin solution, 1 gallon; paraffin-kerosene solution, 4 to 8 gallons; and liquid anionic-dialkylolamide detergent composition, 2 to 16 ounces; said volumes being U.S. liquid measure.
2. A liquid coating and impregnating liquid-resistant composition of matter comprising soybean oil alkyd resin solution, 1 gallon; kerosene, 4 gallons; liquid anionic-dialkylolamide detergent composition, 2 to 16 ounces; water, 19-20 gallons; and mineral spirits, 19-20 gallons, said volumes being U.S. liquid measure.
3. A liquid coating and impregnating liquid-resistant composition of matter adapted to be mixed with a diluent, said composition of matter comprising soybean oil alkyd resin solution, 1 gallon; kerosene, 8 gallons; paraflin, 32 ounces; and liquid anionic-dialkylolamide detergent composition, 16 ounces, said volumes being U.S. liquid measure.
4. Corrugated and laminated paper boards coated with the dried-thereon diluted composition of claim 1.
5. Corrugated and laminated paper boards impregnated with the dried-therein diluted composition of claim 1.
