Agent United States Patent 3,446,345 SASH PROTECTORS Ottar Arvid Frosoy, 47 Chestnut Hill Parkway, Islington, Ontario, Canada Filed Mar. 22, 1968, Ser. No. 715,236 Int. Cl. B65d 85/30, 81/02; A47b 95/00 US. Cl. 206-60 10 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A plastic clip for attachment to the corners of door and wmdow sashes for spacing stacked sashes from each other and for protecting the corners of said sashes.
This invention relates to protector clips and is particularly directed to clips for protecting the corners of door and window sashes and for spacing door and window sashes from each other when stacked.
Door and window sashes frequently are damaged when stacked for storage, or while in transit, due to the sashes rubbing against each other and being struck at their exposed corners. Protectors designed to protect sashes here to have been complex in shape and costly to produce, or difficult to attach to sashes, and therefore generally not satisfactory.
I have discovered a sash protector that substantially obviates the foregoing disadvantages which comprises a rigid plastic structure including a pair of opposed side walls each having a corner and a pair of end walls interconnecting said corners rigidly securing said side walls a predetermined spaced distance apart, a plurality of spaced, upstanding ribs formed on the inner surface of one of said side walls defining a space between the free edges of said ribs and the inner surface of other side wall for receiving a sash therein, and a detent depending from one of said side walls for removable engagement of the protector with said sash.
It is a principal object of the present invention, therefore, to provide a protector clip for window and door sashes which will space the sashes from each other when stacked and which will envelop their corners in a protective shield.
It is another object of the invention to provide a protector clip for attachment to the corners of a sash which is simple in construction and which can be quickly and readily removably attached to the sash.
And another object of the invention is the provision of a protector clip for sashes which can be manufactured by conventional injection moulding techniques from an inexpensive thermoplastic.
These and other objects of the invention, and the manner in which they can be attained, will become evident from the following description of the drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of the invention showing the interior of the protector clip;
FIGURE 2 is a perspective view of the protector shown in FIGURE 1, rotated through 180, showing a sash in ghost lines with the protector attached thereto;
FIGURE 3 is an elevation showing a plurality of sashes stacked one above the other, each sash having a protector of the invention;
FIGURE 4 is a perspective view of the bight of another embodiment of protector; and
FIGURE 5 is a perspective view of still another embodiment of the protector showing a sash in ghost lines.
Like reference characters refer to like parts throughout the description of the drawings.
With particular reference to FIGURES 1, 2 and 3, the embodiment of the sash protector shown therein comprises a pair of opposed side walls 12, 14 joined a pre- 3,446,345 Patented May 27, 1969 determined distance apart at their corners by end walls 16, 18 which are disposed at substantially right angles to each other. A plurality of upstanding ribs 22 are formed on the inner surface of side wall 14 a spaced distance apart from each other such that the space defined between the edges 24 of the ribs 22 and the inner surface of side wall 12 are substantially equivalent to the thickness of a window or door sash, as designated by numeral 26 in FIGURES 2. and 3. A detent comprising a projection 28 formed in the bight of side wall 12 projects inwardly a distance substantially equal to the width of the sash to be received in the protector such that bevelled stop 30 will positively engage the inner edge of sash 26, as indicated most clearly by ghost lines in FIGURE 2.
FIGURE 4 illustrates another embodiment of the intion wherein spaced side Walls 40, 42 are secured a predetermined distance apart by end walls 44, 46. A plurality of spaced ribs 48 are formed on the inner side wall of side wall 40 and a plurality of corresponding upstanding ribs 50 are formed on the inner side of side wall 42 for receiving a sash therebetween. A web 52 joining innermost ribs 50a, 50b is adapted to abut the face of the sash to be received in the protector and a stop 58 is formed on web 52 for engagement with the sash received within the protector.
An opening 60 is formed in one end wall to permit the projection of a sash extension therethrough. It will be understood that opening 60 can be formed in the end walls of any of the embodiments of the invention described therein for conformity with the shape of a sash.
FIGURE 5 shows a protector 70 having spaced side walls 72, 74 secured a spaced distance apart by end walls 76, 78. Upstanding ribs 80, 82 and 84 formed in the inner face of side wall 74 are of different heights to Compensate for changes in thickness of the sash 86, shown by ghost lines. A projection 88 formed in the plane of side wall 72 has a stop 90 for engaging the inner edge 92 of sash 86.
The protector of the present invention provides a number of important advantages. Corners of window and 'door sashes, most vulnerable to damage, are protected and the side surface of sashes are further protected by spacing of sashes from each other when stacked in piles. The protector can be inexpensively manufactured by conventional plastic forming techniques such as injection moulding.
What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A sash protector comprising a pair of opposed side walls each having a corner and a pair of end walls interconnecting said corners rigidly securing said side walls a predetermined spaced distance apart, a plurality of spaced, upstanding ribs formed on the inner surface of one of said side walls defining a space between the free edges of said ribs and the inner surface of other side wall for receiving a sash therein, and a detent depending from one of said side walls for removable engagement of the protector with said sash.
2. In a sash protector as claimed in claim 1, said detent comprising a resilient projection depending from one of the side walls and a stop formed at the free end of the projection.
3. In a sash protector as claimed in claim 1, said upstanding ribs being formed integral with and substantially normal to a wall of the protector, and disposed substantially parallel to each other.
4. In a sash protector as claimed in claim 3, said parallel ribs being disposed at about 45 to the plane of the end walls.
5. In a sash protector as claimed in claim 3, said ribs being disposed substantially parallel to one end Wall.
6. In a sash protector as claimed in claim 4, said ribs being of substantially equal height such that their free edges define a plane substantially parallel to the plane of the opposed side wall.
