Int. Cl. A63h 33/36 U.S. Cl. 46-10 1 Claim ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A novel device in a form of a plastic hammer, having a lower head which is threaded into the handle portion and is in the form of a bellows, which when striking a surface will cause a rod on the interior of the head portion of the device, which has a flint attached, to strike upon a striker bar which is serrated in order to produce a sparkling effect through the upper head portion which is transparent, creating a novel effect. The bellows portion has a spring which extends into the handle portion of the device whi h will return the bellows portion to its full down position after striking an object.
This invention relates to flint-using devices, and more particularly to a hammer containing flint device.
It is therefore the main purpose of this invention to provide a sparking hammer or the like, which will have a lower head which is screwed into the end portion of the handle and the lower head is provided with a bellows which when the hammer is used to strike an object the force transmitted through the bellows by means of a rod attached to a plate at the end of the bellows will cause a flint attached to the rod, to strike against a serrated strike-a-bar, thus producing sparks which are visible through the upper head portion of the device.
Another object of this invention is to provide a sparking hammer which will have an interchangeable upper head portion which is externally threaded so that it may be screwed into the head portion of the device.
In the drawing:
FIGURE 1 is a fragmentary side view of the present invention shown in elevation and partly broken away.
FIGURE 2 is a cross-sectional view taken along the lines 22 of FIGURE 1.
FIGURE 3 is a cross-sectional view taken along the lines of 3-3 of FIGURE 1 showing the striker bar and arm in fragmentary condition.
FIGURE 4 is a side view of the invention shown partly broken away with a modified head attached thereto.
FIGURE 5 is a fragmentary side view of the present invention showing another modified form of head attached to the invention FIGURE 6 is a side elevation showing a modified form of the invention as used in conjunction with a musicians drum.
FIGURE 7 is a top plan view of FIGURE 6.
FIGURE 8 is a fragmentary side view of the plastic box showing the downward position of the striker bar portion of the device shown in FIGURES 6 and 7.
According to this invention, sparking hammer 10 is provided with a plastic handle 11, which is circular in cross section and has a lower head portion 12, which is threaded into hammer 10. The lower head portion 12 is also provided with an external bellows 13, to which is secured a plate 14. An extension 15, of a spring 16, carried within handle 11, is secured to plate 14 on the interior of bellows 13. The upper arm of spring 16, is secured by rivet 17 to the interior of handle 11, while the lower portion is free to move within the handle. A striker bar 18, serrated on its exterior, frictionally engages flint 19 secured to the oscillating extension 15 of spring 16 in order that it will engage the serrations of striker bar 18, when the bellows 13 of lower head portion 12 strikes a surface. To the end of striker bar 18 is secured a rod 20, having a plate 21, which bears against the interior of the upper head 22, which is interchangeably threaded into sparking hammer 10. A plastic nail 23 extending from a plastic block 24, provides a striking surface for sparking hammer 10. When handle 11 is held in the hand of the user and the lower head portion 12 is raised toward plastic nail 23 (not shown), the plate 14 strikes plastic nail 23 and upon doing so, collapses on the extension 15 of spring 16 carrying flint 19, will urge flint 19 against the serrations of striker bar 18 causing a plurality of sparks to be produced which may be observed through the upper head 22.
Looking now at FIGURE 4 of the drawing, one will see a modified head 25 secured to sparking hammer 10.
Looking at FIGURE 5 of the drawings, one will see a modified form of hammer head 26, which is also made of transparent plastic and contains a plurality of balls 27, which when the hammer 10 is in use, will create a rattling effect simultaneously with the sparking produced by the flint 19.
Looking at FIGURES 6 and 7 of the drawings, one will see a sparking mechanism 28, which is attached to the musicians drum 29, the stationary member 30, being welded to the strap 31, which is adjustable by an adjustable bolt 32.
It will be noted that various forms of adjustment for the striking portion of the mechanism may be incorporated in sparking mechanism 28. The upper portion 33 of sparking mechanism 28 is provided with a flint 34, which engages the serrated portion of bar member 35 and a drum stick 36 is used to strike a bar member 35, which will cause sparking within the clear plastic box 37, enclosing the upper portion 33, the flint, 34 and the bar member 35 within clear plastic box 37.
In use, the drum stick 36 when striking the bar portion member 35, will urge bar portion 35 against flint 34 in a downward movement thus casuing sparking within the clear plastic box 37.
What I now claim is:
1. A spark producing hammer, comprising in combination, a hollow plastic handle, a T-configurated head at one end of said handle, one end of said T-configurated head comprising a transparent, clear plastic dome, the opposite end of said T-configurated head comprising a compressible bellows having an end wall across the end theretof, said end wall being secured to one end of an extension within said head, said extension having a flint secured rigidly thereto, said extension being integral with one end of a spring of U-shaped configuration extending at right angle to said extension and into said hollow plastic handle, the opposite end of said spring being rigidly secured by a rivet to an inner side wall of said hollow handle, said transparent dome having one end of a rod secured thereto, said rod extending parallel to said extension, said rod carrying a striker bar at its opposite end, said striker bar having a plurality of external serrations, said serrations being in alignment for frictionally engaging an end of said flint, said bellows providing a means for longitudinalvmovement of said References Cited extension alongside a longitudinal plane of said striker UNITED STATES PATENTS bar against the action of said spring whereby said end of said flint will produce sparks upon engagement with 2,088,727 8/1937 Smlth 46-10 said serrations, and said spring providing a means for return movement of said bellows into an extended posi- 5 LOUIS MANCENE P'lmary Exammer' tion again, and said bellows being activated by striking CHARLES R.
