March 25, 1969 E. c. KIEKHAEFER 3,434,251
DUAL PANE SKYLIGHT Filed Jan. 12, 1967 Fig. 3.
INVENTOR ELMER CARL KIEKHAEFER mum United States Patent 3,434,251 DUAL PANE SKYLIGHT Elmer C. Kiekhaefer, Winter Haven, Fla., assignor to Brunswick Corporation, Chicago, 11]., a corporation of Delaware Filed Jan. 12, 1967, Ser. No. 608,928 Int. Cl. E04b 7/18, 1/62; E06b /00 US. Cl. 52-22 4 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to a dual pane skylight and more particularly to the mounting support for the spaced panes of the skylight.
The invention has been applied in the mounting of dual domes upon a curb as disclosed in copending application Ser. No. 608,927 filed on even date herewith by the present inventor in which the invention pertained to the curb construction for supporting a dome. The present invention pertains to the mounting for the dome upon a curb such as the curb of the aforesaid copending application.
In carrying out the invention the overlying peripheral substantially horizontal flanges of the spaced domes are separated by suitable sealing and heat insulating material and the flange of the inner dome overlies the curb and is supported thereon by a suitable sealing and heat insulating material.
The domes are secured in place by an outer angular retainer extending upwardly from the curb and having a generally horizontal inwardly extending flange overlying the peripheral flanges of the dome. Caulking or other sealing means may be provided between the flange of the upper dome and the flange of the angular retainer. Likewise sealing and heat insulation is preferably provided between the peripheral flange of the lower dome and the top of the supporting curb.
In the preferred embodiment the domes are formed of acrylic thermo-plastic sheet material and are shown generally rectangular. The sealing and insulating material is comprised of separate foamed plastic gaskets which confine the edges of the domes. It is possible to form the foamed plastic gaskets in situ, in which case the several gaskets may be integral.
The accompanying drawing illustrates the best mode presently contemplated for carrying out the invention.
In the drawing:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a skylight dome embodying the invention and with a part broken away and sectioned to show the curb support which may be employed;
FIG. 2 is an enlarged transverse vertical section showing the mounting of the domes upon the curb; and
FIG. 3 is a detail sectional view of the mounting showing a construction in which integral gaskets are employed.
The skylight illustrated comprises the dome I mounted upon a curb 2 which in turn is supported by the roof 3.
The curb 2 and roof 3 may be of any suitable construction, that illustrated being of the type disclosed and claimed in the aforesaid pending application.
The dome 1 comprises two spaced dome shaped panes 4 and 5 of acrylic or other suitable transparent or translucent material. Each of the domes 4 and 5 has a generally horizontal peripheral flange 6, the flange 6 of upper dome 5 overlying the flange 6 of the lower dome 4.
The flange 6 of the lower dome 4 overlies the top 7 of the curb 2.
An angular retainer member 8 is provided to secure the domes 4 and 5 in place upon the curb 2. For this purpose the member 8 has a vertical wall portion 9 fastened to the outer wall of curb 2 by any suitable means such as screws 10 and a horizontal flange portion 11 extending inwardly over the flange 6 of dome 5.
The outer edges of flanges 6 are spaced inwardly from retainer portion 9 to provide for differences in expansion and contraction caused by temperature changes and differential.
Heat insulation between the inside and outside of the skylight is provided by disposing a gasket 12 of heat insulating material between the flanges 6 of the two domes 4 and 5 and which serves to space the central portions of the domes and provide an air pocket therebetween.
A similar sealing and heat insulating gasket 13 may be provided between the upper flange 6 and the overlying portion 11 of retainer 8, and likewise a. sealing and heat insulating gasket 14 may be provided between the lower flange 6 and the top of curb 2.
A caulking or other sealing compound 15 may be applied to the inner edge of portion 11 of retainer 8 to seal it with the upper dome 5.
The construction is particularly adapted to relieve stresses that may develop in the mounting due to the development of expansion and contraction of the several flanges by reason of changes in temperature.
For this purpose the several gaskets 12, 13 and 14 provide for horizontal slippage of the flanges 6 relative to each other and to flange portion 11 of retainer 8 and the top 7 of curb 2. Thus stress is eliminated as the domes 4 and 5 expand and contract relative to each other and to the mounting.
The gaskets 12, 13 and 14 shown may be of any suitable material but preferably are of a foamed plastic of the closed cell type and which provides a limited cushioning effect in assembly. Each gasket may be provided with a downward lip 16 which serves to position the domes 4 and 5 and space their peripheries from the retainer 8.
If desired, the gaskets 12, 13 and 14 may be formed in situ by the foaming of a suitable plastic material as illustrated in FIG. 3. For this purpose suitable spacers 17 may be provided between the overlying members 6, 7 and 11 during assembly, and which assure substantially uniform spacing of the members.
In this construction the several gaskets are integrally joined by a vertical portion 18 adjacent to the retainer portion 9.
Various modes of carrying out the invention are contemplated as being within the scope of the following claims particularly pointing out and distinctly claiming the subject matter which is regarded as the invention.
Iclaim:
1. The mounting for a dual pane dome type skylight upon a curb in which the panes have substantially horizontal peripheral portions, comprisinga gasket disposed between the substantially horizontal peripheral portions of the panes and vertically spacing the latter, retainer means secured outwardlyof the curb and extending up wardly in spaced relation to the edges of the spaced panes with an inward flange portion overlying the peripheral portion of the upper pane, and individual gaskets disposed between the upper pane and said overlying peripheral portion of the retainer means and between the lower pane and the supporting curb, said gaskets providing for sealing and allowing differential radial expansion and contraction of said panes arising from changes in temperature and each said gasket having a depending outer lip disposed adjacent said retainer means to locate the gasket relative to the corresponding panes.
2. The construction of claim 1 in which said gaskets are formed of pre-foamed plastic material and provide Sealing and heat insulation between the upper and lower panes and the adjacent parts of the mounting.
3. The mounting for a dual pane dome type skylight upon a curb, comprising a gasket disposed between the substantially horizontal peripheral portions of the panes and vertically spacing the latter, retainer means secured outwardly of the curb and extending upwardly in spaced relation to the edges of the spaced panes with an inward flange portion overlying the peripheral portion of the upper pane, and individual gaskets disposed between the upper pane and said overlying peripheral portion of the retainer means and between the lower pane and the supporting curb, said gaskets providing for sealing and allowing differential radial expansion and contraction of said panes arising from changes in temperature and said gaskets are foamed in situ and integrally joined by a peripheral portion adjacent said retainer means.
4. In a device of the class described having dual spaced panes of light transmitting material secured in a frame with spacer members between the panes and between the panes and the adjacent members of said frame, and sealing and heat insulating material between the edge portions of said panes and between said edge portions and adjacent confining frame members, said material being foamed in situ as a single integral sealing member from a foam type composition.
