WHIFFLETREE ATTACHMENT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of-Letters Patent No. 343,105, dated June 1, 1886.

To all whom, it may concern.-

' Be it known that I, LEONARD O. BUTcH, a

citizen of the United States of America, re-

siding at Oircleville, in the county of Pickaway and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vhiffletree Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to whiffletrees; and it consists in the improvements hereinafter described and set forth.

In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a plan view showing my improved attachment applied to a whiifletree, and Fig. 2 is a side View.

A represents the whiflietree, the upper side of which is cut away or recessed to receive the plate B, which is provided with three or more countersunk perforations for securing the same within the recess. This plate is beveled or cut away at its back portion, as shown at a, so as to leave a rearwardly-projecting portion, a, of the full width of the plate B, adjacent to the beveled portion and end of the plate B. The outer end of the plate B projects beyond the end of the whiffletree proper, and it is bifurcated, as shown at b, for the reception of the tongue 0 of the pivoted plate (1. The pivoted plate 0 is attached to the plate B by means of a pintle, (l, which passes diagonally through the end of the plate B and the tongue 0, adjacent to the shoulders c of the pivoted plate 0. The pivoted plate 0 is attached to the portion B, so that when it is turned downwardly, as shown in Fig. 2, the outer side of said pivoted plate will be nearly flush with the end of the plate B. The tongue or projecting portion 0 is beveled at its inner end, so as to lie upon a corresponding bevel at the end of the recess I). These bevels serve as a stop.

When it is desired to attach a trace to the whiffletree, the pivoted plate 0 is turned upward so as to be in line with the plate B, and the eye of the trace is then slipped over the pivoted catch upon the whifiletree beyond the tongue 0.

turned to the position shown in Fig. 2, which will prevent the trace slipping off the end of the whiflletree. The pivoted latch G will remain in a vertical position, as the lower portion will overbalance thetongue c.

If desirable, the portion B, instead of consisting of a flat plate, as shown, may be made into a socket which will fit over the end of the whiffietree.

By the construction hereinbefore described,- it will be seen that the pintle cl, which passes diagonally through the end of the female portion or plate B, and through the metal portion or pivoted plate 0, will cause the projecting portion or tongue to bear against the sides of the recess and hold said part in whatever position it may be placed by frictional contact; also, that by providing a flat portion against which the opening in the end of the trace will draw the end of said trace will not be liable to spread, whichspreading is also in a measure prevented by the beveled portion of the plate B,which causes the opening to bear against the projecting portion a, thus providing an attachmenowhich conforms in shape to the slot in the trace, and one with a close-fitting joint, which will prevent the parts rattling against each other, and by making the pintle lie diagonally with respect to the parts which it connects I provide an eccentric joint.

I claim The improved whiffletree attachment or trace-fastener herein described, consisting of a portion, B, having a bifurcated end adapted to extend a slight distance beyond the tree, the inner side of said bifurcated end being beveled substantially in line with the tip of the tree, forming a recessed portion for the engagement of the trace, which also engages the tree-tip, in combination with alatch-plate pivoted to said bifurcated end, and provided with a tongue, 0, having abeveled end,whereby said latch-plate may be turned to a vertical position to bear'against the extremity of the tree, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
