INITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.-
GHARLES SUTTON, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
STAMP OR DIE FOR CEMENT PAVEMENTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 342,980, dated June 1, 1886.
. Application filed November 9, 1885. Serial No. 182,310. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES SUTTON, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dies for Stamping Margins for Cement-\Vork, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful die for stamping or forming beads or moldings on the corners or edges of plastic material-such as when marking off sidewalks, floors, &c., into blocks or squares when composed of cement, 820., in order to imitate what is known as chisel-workin natural stone; and my invention consists in the peculiar formation of a die or tool to be impacted upon or against the material while it is in a plastic state, all of which will hereinafter be fully described.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of my die or tool for stamping margins on sidewalks, 850., having a curved knife and a plain or smooth face. Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of atool or die for stamping margins, having a cuttingknife, corrugated or ribbed surface, with a plain surface between the termination of the ribs or corrugations and the knife. Fig. 3 is a crosssection of a tool having a double concavity and a cutting knife or blade to form a groove, as shown in section of a pavement. Fig. 4 shows the impression made by the tool in a sidewalk.
In practice I construct a knife or die as shown at A, Fig. 1, having a concavity, B, upon the inner side and a cutting-edge. This die is screwed or otherwise connected to the edge of the holder 0, and after the cement is laid and still unset I take the tool and place the die along the corner of block, and with a mallet or hammer strike upon the raised rib D of the die or holder, which embeds the concave die in the edge of the plastic material, and when the die is removed a bevel or rounded corner will be formed, as shown in Fig. 4 at E.
From the above it will be seen that only one I corner or edge of the block has been acted upon. Should it be desirable, however, to act upon two or opposite corners or edges at once, the tool shown in Fig. 3 may be employed, which shows both edges of the block rounded with a V-shaped central groove, as in Fig. 4.
In order to facilitate the work, the surface of the plastic material may be first marked off into squares or blocks with a strip of metal having a thin edge, after which the thin sharp edge of the tool, Fig. 3, is placed in the cut or mark so made and forced downward, which forms the two rounded edges upon the opposite corners of the block, as shown.
It is evident by this description that a die may be employed having a beveled. or other shaped edge in place of the concave form shown, and I do not desire to confine myself to the exact form of die shown, as heretofore these edges or corners have been formed by a trowel or plow, requiring great skill and care to obtain'a perfect edge or bead, and hence the essence of my invention is to form such beads or edges with a die of the desired form and forcing it by impact or blows from a hammer or mallet upon or against the material while in a plastic state, and form the desired edge in one operation.
Having thus described my invention, what I clai m, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
The herein described tool for forming a head or edge upon the corners of the dividing lines of plastic material when laid, as in sidewalks, pavements, &c., which tool consists of the die A, having on one side the raised median rib D, and having the other side provided with a longitudinal cutting-knife, O, and a corrugated surface with a plain surface between the terminal line of the ribs or corrugations and the knife.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal.

O. W. M. SMITH, CHAS. E. KELLY.
