INVENTOR. WARNER M. SMITH me wldwm TORNE Y5 United States Patent 3,429,012 STRAP BUCKLE Warner M. Smith, P.O. Box 687, Bristow, Okla. 74010 Filed Nov. 14, 1966, Ser. No. 594,003 U.S. Cl. 24-191 1 Claim Int. Cl. A44b 11/06 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A strap retaining buckle utilizes first and second pivotal members with the strap inserted in such a manner that strapping pressure tends to normally pivot the second member into further clamping retention pressure against the strap.
This invention relates to a strap retaining device or buckle, particularly for strapping and retaining articles such as packages, letters, etc.
Accordingly, it is a primary object of this invention to provide a clamping device for flexible straps, belts, or the like, which is readily attachable and which is easily adjustable to variable sizes of the objects being contained and is easily released when desired.
A further object of this invention is to provide a clamping device for flexible straps or the like which is simple in construction.
These and other objects of the invention can be obtained from a further reading of the specification and claims when taken in conjunction with the following illustrations in which:
FIGURE 1 is a front elevational view of the strap clamp of this invention.
FIGURE 2 is a sectional view taken along the line 2-2 of FIGURE 1.
Referring now to the drawings the device of this invention involves two basic portions including a first member and a second member 12 which are pivotal relative to each other about pin 14. The first member 10 includes a rearward portion 16 which is canted downwardly and includes a slot 18. At the forward end of the first member is a smaller portion 20 which likewise is canted downwardly. The first member further includes downwardly extending side flange members, one of which is identified by the number 22 in FIGURE 2. Each of the flange members include a pivot pin 14.
The second member 12 includes a yoke, one leg of which is shown in FIGURE 2 and identified by the numeral 24 and pivotal about pin 14. Forwardly thereof is the bight portion 26 which includes a curved portion 28 which is formed of material from the yoke which is bent upwardly upon itself. Forwardly thereof is an arcuate portion 30 which includes a slot 32.
In usage a strap or belting material 40, at one end thereof, is looped through slot 18 of the first member and 3,429,1312 Patented Feb. 25, 1969 there retained by a snap or brad 42. The free end of the strap designated by the numeral 44, is passed around the dotted lines in FIGURE 2. This provides a basis for releasing the tension about the articles strapped.
A mention has been described with reference to specific and preferred embodiments. It will be apparent, however, that other modifications can be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. Accordingly, this invention should be construed not to be limited to the embodiment herein described but should be limited only by the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed:
1. A strap retaining device comprising:
(A) a first member having:
a downwardly canted rearward portion, a slot in said rearward portion to retain one end of said strap,
a downwardly canted forward portion, downwardly canted and opposed flange members,
a pivot pin attached to each of said flange members,
(B) a second member having:
opposed yoke portions having means to pivot about said pivot pin of said first member,
the bight portion of said yoke being forwardly thereof,
an upwardly and forwardly curved portion at one end of said bight portion adapted, when pivoted and without said strap therebetween, to make contact with the downwardly canted forward portion of said first member, and an upwardly curved portion at the other, forward end of said bight portion, there being a slot therein, the free end of said strap being inserted under the forward end of said bight portion, thence through said slot in said second member, thence between said upwardly and forwardly curved portion of said second member and the downwardly canted forward portion of said first member.
