- I first construct a bottom for a wagon or sleigh body of any convenient size and length, (marked G.) I then make and connect sides E E, as seen in Fig. I, making them of a sufficient height to receive a seat of any convenient and suitable form, and in order to hold said seat from slipping I construct two iron or brass hooks (marked 0 c in Fig. I) and firmly fix them to the seat. I then make catches or loops on the top of the sides oppo site and parallel to each other, (marked a a, Fig. 11,) and by elevating the back of the seat the hooks are allowed to pass into and fasten in the catches, and the weight of the persons riding keeps the seat firmly in its place. In the rear of the catches above mentioned I firmly fix two others, opposite and parallel to each other, (marked e in Fig. 1H,) and by elevating the back of the seat it may be firmly secured, as before described.
- I construct the rear end of the wagon sides by sloping them, as seen in parts markedE in Figs. I and II, and then connect them firmly by a cross-piece, (marked F in Fig. III.) I then connect two seat arms or ends (marked D D, Fig. I) to these sides by inserting two pins (marked (1, Fig. I) through two hinges, (marked bl) bl) in said figure.) I then connect on the cross-piece holding the sides a seat-back of convenient height by inserting a long brass pin (marked g) through a groove on the top of the cross-piece (marked ff in Fig. III) and two loops on the seat-back, (marked h h in Fig. IV,) and to this seat-back I connect a movable seat (marked B in Fig. IV) by means of two hinges, (marked 0 c in Fig. IV.)

IMPROVEMENT lN SEATS FOR WAGONS OR SLEIGHS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 34,261, dated January 28, 1862.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES T. MINARD, of Danbury, in the county of Grafton, State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and useful Single or Double Seated Body for W'agons or Sleighs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, in which Figure I isa view of a double-seated sleighbody. Fig. II is a view of a single-seated sleigh-body, and Figs. III, IV, and V are transverse sections of the same.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I first construct a bottom for a wagon or sleigh body of any convenient size and length, (marked G.) I then make and connect sides E E, as seen in Fig. I, making them of a sufficient height to receive a seat of any convenient and suitable form, and in order to hold said seat from slipping I construct two iron or brass hooks (marked 0 c in Fig. I) and firmly fix them to the seat. I then make catches or loops on the top of the sides oppo site and parallel to each other, (marked a a, Fig. 11,) and by elevating the back of the seat the hooks are allowed to pass into and fasten in the catches, and the weight of the persons riding keeps the seat firmly in its place. In the rear of the catches above mentioned I firmly fix two others, opposite and parallel to each other, (marked e in Fig. 1H,) and by elevating the back of the seat it may be firmly secured, as before described.
I construct the rear end of the wagon sides by sloping them, as seen in parts markedE in Figs. I and II, and then connect them firmly by a cross-piece, (marked F in Fig. III.) I then connect on the cross-piece holding the sides a seat-back of convenient height by inserting a long brass pin (marked g) through a groove on the top of the cross-piece (marked ff in Fig. III) and two loops on the seat-back, (marked h h in Fig. IV,) and to this seat-back I connect a movable seat (marked B in Fig. IV) by means of two hinges, (marked 0 c in Fig. IV.)
When I wish to use my wagon or sleigh with two seats, I fix themovable front seat, as before described, in the front loops or catches, (marked a a, Fig. I.) I then elevate the movable seat-back until it is on a line or flush with the cross-piece F. I then raise up the seat ends or arms and connect these ends to the back by means of an iron hook or catch, (marked k in Fig. IV.) Ithen lower the movable seat to a level with the front seat, Where it rests firmly on two projections or rests on the seat ends, the whole forming a doubleseated wagon or sleigh body.
When I wish to use my wagon or sleigh with one seat only, I raise the movable seat from the rest until it meets the seat-back, and then unhook the back seat from the ends, which allows the ends to be placed in the wagon-body. I then lower the seat-back until it rests on the sloping sides of the wagon or sleigh body. I then change the front seat to the back hooks or catches, where it meets and securely holds, by resting on it, the movable back seat, forming asingle-seated wagon or sleigh.
When I wish to use my wagon or sleigh with an open body,I remove the pin (marked 9) which holds the back seat to the body, and the pins (1 d, which hold the seat ends or sides, and remove the front movable seat or fix in either of the loops or catches, as convenience requires, forming an open wagon or sleigh.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The peculiar construction of the adjustable seat B, in combination with the movable seat A, to a wagon or sleigh body so as to form a single or double seated wagon or sleigh, arranged as and for the purpose specified.
