J. P. FARRELL.
COMBINATION TABLE. No. 342,343. Patented-Ma 25, 1.886.
WITNESSES: INVENTOR 5%. 7164 77 W ATTORNEY N. PETERS, Phalwlithognplm. waving m;
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES P. FARRELL, OF NE\V YORK, N. Y.
COMBINATION-TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 342,343, dated May 25, 1886.
Application filed April 11, 1885.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES P. FARRELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Combined Tables, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of tables which are used by merchants and others for facilitating their business.
The object of my invention is to produce an article of furniture which can be adjusted for three distinct purposes, and the whole combined into one article: first, being a fiat-top table for folding goods upon; second, being an inclined or slanting table for displaying goods or samples thereon; third, to be used for a bench or seat, the whole being simple, compact, and easily adjusted, which will be hereinafter more fully explained, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a fiattop table. Fig. 2 represents a bench or scat. Fig. 3 represents an inclined-top table. Figs. 4. and 5 rep resent detail view of parts.
MIy invention consists of the frame A, supported upon suitable legs or uprights, B. The back uprights,G, extending above the frameA and to the top of said upright C the table-top D is attached by pivoting blocks or hinges E, through which the guide-rods F slide freely, the said rods F being attached to the under side of the top D, and provided with an offset, a, for holding the top D securely in place when in position, as shown in Fig. 1, the other edge being supported by the upturned seat G, which is pivoted to the frame A at b, and is prevented from being displaced by the stop (1, which is secured to under side the top D.
Serial No. lGLSl'lT. (No model.)
WVhen the top D is in the position shown in Fig. 1, it can be used as a table for folding goods or merchandise upon. \Vhen samples or materials are to be displayed, the seat G is turned down on the frame A, and the top D will then rest 011 the arms H, and will be inclined, asshownin Fig. 3. hen not desired for use as a table, the top is tilted back and suspended by hinge-blocks E back ofthe frame, as shown in Fig. 2, and then it can be used as a bench or seat. The top of table may be set at any incline by the stops 1 2 3 on the under side of the top D. Thus it will be seen I am enabled to combine in one piece of furniture such adjustments which are applicable to three distinct purposes.
I am aware of the patent to Briggs, No. 5,390, of December 11, 1847, Chairs, and do not claim the construction therein shown.
hat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A table with adjustable top D, provided with stop (I, in combination with hinged seat G, the said seat G forming a support for top D when placed in a vertical position, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In an adj ustable-top table, the guide-rod F, secured to the under side of table D and provided with offset or detent a, and passing through the pivot-block E, which is attached to the supporti ngframe c,substantially as and for the purpose specified.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 3d day of April, A. D. 1885.
