UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VILLIAM HENRY HUDSVELL, OF BROOKLYN, NEV YORK.
POWDER-PUFF.
.SPECIFICATION forming part Aof Letters Patent No. 342,206, dated May 18, 1886. Application filed September 17,1885. Seria-l No. 1i7,l35. (No model.)
T0 all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM HENRY HUDS- WELL, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Powder- Puffs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.`
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and which is a side elevation, partly in section, of one of my improved powder-puffs, the powder-box and its cover being shown in section.
The object of this invention is to provide powder-puffs constructed in such a manner that the down will be prevented from being matted or feltcd by the weight of the puffs, and the pui's will thus be made much more durable than ordinary powder-puii`s.
The invention consists inthe construction and combination of various parts of the powder-puff, as will be hereinafter fully described and then claimed.
A represents an ordinary powder-box, and B is'the box-cover, which is .perforated centrally for the passage of the stein or handle G of the puff D. y
Upon the lower side of the cover B, and con centric with its central aperture, is formed an annular' flange, E, into which is fitted an annular liange, F, formed upon the base plate G of the puli' D.
To the cover B, at a little distance from its central aperture and within the circle of the annular telescoping flanges E F, are attached.V
the upper ends of one or more spiral or other springs, H, the lower ends of which are attached to the base-plate G. lith this construction the puff D, when not in use, will be supported out of contact with the powder, so that the down will not be matted or felted, as it soon is when the puff rests upon the powder.
When the puff is to be used, the handle C is presseddownward, bringing thepuffDinto contact with the powder, and is thenturned forward and back a few times through a part of a revo' lution. The puff is then removed from the boX and used in the ordinary manner. Vith this construction the box-cover is in place upon the box when the puff is applied to the powder, so that a cloud of powder dust cannot rise from the box into the room to settle upon and soil the table and the articles standing thereon, as must necessarily be the case when the puff has to be applied tothe powder in an open box in the ordinary manner. With this construction also the telescoping flanges protect the springs from the powder dust and guide the puff in its movements.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and dc'sire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a powder-puff, the combination, with the puff D and handle O, having base-plate G, and the box-cover B, having central aperture,
of the spring or springs H, connected to the said base-plate and cover, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the pull when not in use will be supported out of contact with the powder, as set forth.
2. In a powder-puff, the combination, with the puff D and handle C, having base'plate G, the box-cover B, having central aperture, and the spring or springs H, of the telescoping lianges E F, formed upon the said cover and base-plate, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the said springs will be protected from the powder dust and the puff will be guided in its movements, as set forth.
VILLIAM HENRY HUDSVELL.
