BOTTLE- 'STOPPER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 34:2,089, dated May 18, 1886.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES M. HANSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Thorndike, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bottle Stoppers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvement-s in bottle stoppers, the, object being to provide for elastic stoppers-such as cork, rubber, &c.an improved soft and flexible attach ment, which is permanently connected thereto, and serves as a means for extracting the stopper from a bottle.

In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective view of a bottle-stopper constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of Fig. l, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the neck of a bottle having therein a stopper embody ing my improvements.

In the drawings, a is a bottle-stopper, of cork, rubber, or other similar material of such nature as is capable of being punctured, for the purpose hereinafter set forth.

An extracting-strap, b, of textile material, leather, or other yielding substance, is attached to the stopper (1, as follows, and extends in a loop form above one end thereof. \Vith the assistance of a suitable needle or otherimplement capable of puncturing said stopper transverselyatanyconvenientpoint betweenitsends the two ends 0 of said strap b are drawn through the stopper from side to side thereof, in opposite directions, and left projecting more or less beyond the latter, as shown in the drawings. It is preferable, however, that the said ends of the strap I) be secured in the stopper at such a place thereon as shall cause them to be brought between the latter and the neck of the bottle when the stopper is inserted therein, as shown in Fig. 3. The ends of said extracting-strap, when drawn through the stopper in the manner stated, adhere very strongly to the latter, and it is very difficult to draw them out by pulling on the loop of the strap;

and for bottles containing fancy articles the said strap may be made of colored textile material. If desired, said strap may be made of brass or other similar soft metal and attached to the stopper in the manner above set forth, in which case the said loop above the stopper would maintain generally the form shown in Figs. 1 and 3.

hat I claim as my invention is 1. A stopper for a bottle or similar vessel, consisting of cork or analogous material, having an extracting-strap attached thereto by passing the ends of the latter transversely through said stopper in opposite directions, substantially as set forth.

2. A stopper for a bottle or similar vessel, consisting of cork or analogous material, having an extracting-strap attached thereto by passing the ends thereof transversely through said stopper in opposite directions, said ends being left projecting beyond the sides of the stopper, substantially as set forth.
