SPRING SHAGKLE.
No. 341,781. 7 Patented May 11, 1886.
A flivelzan; 55, flVq/esi vlye/22y I wi ml J v UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY TIMKEN, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
SPRlNG-SHACKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 341,781, dated May 11, 1886.
Application filed January 27,1886. Serial No. le9,957. (No model.)
Figure l is a perspective view of my 1111- proved shackle, showing the partsdisconnectcd. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the parts put together. Fig. 3 is a vertical sec tion through the shackle and the side bar or axle of a vehicle to which the shackle is secured.
My invention relates to certain improvements in shackles intended more particularly for use on vehicles; and my invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fullydescribed, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a side bar or axle of a vehicle to which my improved shackle may be applied.
B represents the body of the shackle, pro vided with holes 0, to receive the usual strap, D, by which it is secured to the side bar or axle, and having a groove, E, to receive the part F of the shackle, as usual.
As far as I have yet described, the shackle is of usual form, and such a form as swinging shackles usually have.
Heretofore it has been a source of considerableannoyance to havethe part F of the shackle cut into the wooden side bar, against which it bears, and to obviate this difficulty in a recess, H, of the body B, that covers the is the object of my invention; and to this end I makea metal bearing between this part F of the shackle and the side bar by placing a plate, G,
part F of the shackle, as shown, and prevents its cutting into the side bar. I prefer to hold this plate in place by lugs or ribs 1, formed upon or secured to the body B, and which are bent over into recesses J in the plate. These recesses J do not, by preference, extend to the bent ends of the plate, so that when the lugs are over into them there is not the slightest danger of the plate moving eudwise and losing out when the vehicle is in use.
The ribs are shown in Figs. 1 and 2 before being bent over onto the plate, and in Fig. 3 they are shown bent over.
I claim as my invention 1. In a shackle, the combination of the body part, swinging part, and plate, the bodypart having ribs and the plate having grooves or recesses into which the ribs are bent to hold it in place, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. M
2. In a shackle, the combination of the body part, swinging part, and plate, the body having a recess to receive the plate over the swinging part and lugs or ribs to hold the plate in place, and the plate having recesses that do not extend its entire length to receive the lugs on the body, bent into said recesses, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
HENRY TIMKEN.
