No. 585,512 8 Claims. (Cl. 128519) The present invention relates generally to improvements in articles of apparel and it relates particularly to an improved combination panty-slip undergarment.

Womens underwear commonly includes a panty over which is worn a skirt type undergarment of the slip or half slip variety. This combination of undergarments, although conventionally employed and offering many desirable features, possesses many drawbacks and disadvantages. By reason of the individual and separate nature of the two undergarments, when worn together, they are frequently bulky since they possess common structural members. They are inconvenient and are often unattractive and unsightly since frequently they are not properly matched and worn in the required manner. There have been many undergarment structures heretofore proposed for use in place of the separate panty and slip but these have contributed little to overcoming the drawbacks accompanying the use of the two individual garments and leave much to be desired.

It is, therefore, a principal object of the present invention to provide an improved article of apparel.

Another object of the present invention is to provide an improved womens undergarment.

Still another object of the present invention is to provide an improved panty-slip type combination undergarment.

A further object of the present invention is to provide an article of apparel of the above nature characterized by its simplicity, attractive appearance, versatility and convenience of use.

The above and other objects of the present invention will become apparent from a reading of the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing wherein:

FIGURE 1 is a front perspective view of a combination undergarment embodying the present invention and illustrated in its normally worn position;

FIGURE 2 is a front elevational view of the improved garment in a reversed inside out condition;

FIGURE 3 is a rear elevational view thereof in a reversed inside out condition;

FIGURE 4 is an enlarged sectional view taken along line 44 in FIGURE 2; and

FIGURE 5 is an enlarged sectional view taken along line 55 in FIGURE 2.

In a sense, the present invention contemplates the provision of an article of apparel comprising a skirt section including a front skirt panel and a rear skirt panel having coinciding side edges, and a panty section including a front panty panel and a rear panty panel disposed between said skirt panels and having coinciding edges sandwiched between corresponding of said skirt side edges, said coinciding skirt side edges and panty side edges being joined to form common opposite side seams.

According to a preferred form of the improved combination undergarment the panty panels are formed of an elastic material and the corresponding upper edges of the panels coincide and are joined by an elastic waist band. The panty section includes a crotch member, defined by a tongue formed of an inelastic material medially depending from the panty rear panel and separably fastened to the front panel. The side edges of the tongue member and the bottom edges of the panty panel member have elastic bands secured thereto which delineate panty leg Patented Dec. 24, 1958 'ice openings when the crotch member is fastened to the front panty panel.

Referring now to the drawing which illustrates a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the reference numeral 10 generally designates the improved combination panty-slip undergarment which includes a slip or skirt section 11 and a panty inner section 12.

The skirt section 11 is illustrated as of flared construction and includes a pair of superimposed similarly shaped front and

rear skirt panels

13 and 14, respectively, the corresponding downwardly outwardly diverging side edges 16 of which substantially coincide along the full length thereof. The lower edges 17 of the

13 and 14 may be scalloped, as shown, or may be otherwise decorated.

13 and 14 are preferably formed of a relatively nonelastic material, for example a woven or knitted fabric of cotton, rayon, nylon, polyester, or combinations thereof.

The panty section 12 is advantageously a woven or knitted fabric, formed of an elastic material and stretchable in all directions and includes superimposed front and

The side edges or borders 23 of the

18 and 19 coincide and downwardly outwardly diverge, and in the reversed condition of the garment, as shown in FIGURES 2 to 5, coincide with the upper side edges 16 of the

skirt panels

13 and 14, the side edges 16 being sandwiched between the side edges 23. Lines of stitches 24 extend along the full lengths of the skirt side edges 16 joining the corresponding edges together with the coinciding panty side edges 23.

The lower edge of the front panty panel 18 is symmetrical and includes laterally opposite concave sections 26 separated by a medial lower tab section 27 which has a horizontal bottom edge. Extending across and sewn to the front face of the tab section 27 is a fabric band 28 which has a high nap or pile on its outer or exposed face, the lower edge of the band 28 coinciding with the lower edge of the tab section 27. The lower edge of the rear panty panel 19 includes laterally spaced curved concave sections 29 which converge downwardly to a medial horizontal section 30. Sewn to each of the

26 and 29 between the ends thereof is a depending fabric loop 32, which is separably engaged by a hook element 33 of a garter member 34 of well known construction including a depending elastic band carrying a stocking engaging element.

A crotch defining tongue member on panel 36, advantageously formed of an inelastic material such as a knitted or woven fabric, depends from the panty section medial edge 30 and has an upper edge coextensive with and sewn to the edge 30. The tongue 36 has concave side edges 37 which extend from and smoothly join the edges 29 and converge downwardly to a horizontal medial bottom edge 38 of lesser length than the upper edge 30. Sewn to the front face of the tongue member 36 along the bottom edge 38 is a band 39 having an outer or exposed face which has a nap or pile formed of relatively stiff resilient fibers terminating in hook shaped sections of known construction whereby the bands 28 and 39 define pressure type separable fastening means, a separable coupling being etiected by pressing together the outer faces of the bands 28 and 39 in the known manner.

When the separable fastening bands 28 and 39 are coupled to close the crotch section 36, the

40 and 41 delineate the leg openings of the panty section 12 and the tongue member 36 defines the crotch.

The application and use of the improved undergarment is clear from the above description. The composite garment 10 can be easily and rapidly donned and the need to match the positions of a panty and slip is obviated. Moreover, the bulk of a plurality of heavy seams, and elastic waist bands with its accompanying unsightliness has been eliminated.

While there has been described and illustrated a preferred embodiment of the present invention, it is apparent that numerous alterations, omissions and additions may be made without departing from the spirit thereof.

I claim:

1. An article of apparel comprising a skirt section including a front skirt panel and a rear skirt panel having coinciding side edges, and a panty section including a front panty panel and a rear panty panel disposed between said skirt panels and having coinciding edges sandwiched between corresponding of said skirt side edges, said coinciding skirt side edges and panty side edges being joined to form common opposite side seams.

2. The article of apparel of claim 1, including a crotch portion extending between the medial lower edges of said panty panels and delineating leg openings with the panty panel lower edges.

3. The article of apparel of claim 1, including a tongue member medially depending from one of said panty panels and defining a crotch member, and means for separably fastening the outer edge of said tongue member to the other of said panty panels.

4. The article of apparel of claim 1, wherein the upper edges of said front panels and of said rear panels respectively coincide and are joined, and including an elastic band extending along and secured to said upper edges.

5. The article of apparel of claim 1, wherein said panty panels are formed of an elastic material.

6. The article of apparel of claim 1, wherein the upper edges of said front panels and of said rear panels respec tively coincide and are joined and said panty panels are shorter than said skirt sections and are formed of an elastic material and said skirt sections are formed of an inelastic material, and including a crotch defining tongue medially depending from one of said panty panels and separably connected to the other of said panty panels, and a first elastic band extending along and secured to said upper edges.

7. The article of apparel of claim 6, wherein said tongue member is formed of a relatively inelastic material and depends from and is secured to said rear panty panel.

8. The article of apparel of claim 6, including elastic bands extending along and secured to each side edge of said tongue and the adjacent lower edges of said panty panels and delineate leg openings when said tongue is joined to said front and rear panty panels.

Claims

1. AN ARTICLE OF APPAREL COMPRISING A SKIRT SECTION INCLUDING A FRONT SKIRT PANEL AND A REAR SKIRT PANEL HAVING COINCIDING SIDE EDGES, AND A PANTY SECTION INCLUDING A FRONT PANTY PANEL AND A REAR PANTY DISPOSED BETWEEN SAID SKIRT PANELS AND HAVING COINCIDING EDGES SANDWICHED BETWEEN CORRESPONDING OF SAID SKIRT SIDE EDGES, SAID COINCIDING SKIRT SIDE EDGES AND PANTY SIDE EDGES BEING JOINED TO FORM COMMON OPPOSITE SIDE SEAMS.
