SPECIFICATION-forming part of Letters Patent N0. 341,773, dated May 11, 1886.
Application filed November 23, 1885. Serial No. 183,588. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SEYMOUR H. ROSEN BERG, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut,have invented a new Improvement in Machines for Shaping Corsets; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact descriptionof the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, 1n-

This invention relates to the construction of a machine to mechanically shape or press corsets, or parts of corsets, and is an improvement upon the machine for which Letters Patent of the United States No. 329,414 were granted to me October 27, 1885.
In my said patent the apparatus consists of a. frame carrying a hollow former, to which steam, hot water, or other means are applied to heat the former to a high degree, the former corresponding to the shape of the corset or portion of the corset which is to be shaped. Combined therewith is a pair of spring-pressers, arranged parallel with the longitudinal line of the former, and adapted to pass the one down one side and the other on the opposite side of the former, the shape of the inner side of the pressers corresponding to the shape of the former, and so that as the pressers are forced down upon the corset on the former it will stretch and shape the corset corresponding to the former. In that machine the pressers are arranged in a vertical carriage over the former, adapted to move up and down by means of power applied to the carriage.
The object of my present invention is to dispense with the frame-work and carriage over the former; and itconsists in the construction as hereinafter described, and more particularly recited in the claims.

The arms which carry the former are attached to or made a part of a second arm, F, which extends down through the table, and through which an oscillating movement is imparted to the pressers. Such movement, as here represented, is imparted by toothed racks b, one for each presser, as seen in Fig. 3, the arm F of. each presser being connected to its respective rack by a connecting-rod, d.
The racks are arranged in horizontal guides75 in planes at right angles to the axis on which the pressers turn. Horizontal reciprocating movement is imparted to the racks, respectively,by pinions aworking into the said racks,
and the said pinions caused to revolve by a toothed vertical bar, Cr,'working up and down between the said pinions, this bar being operated by a foot-pedal, H, or otherwise. WVhen the presscrs stand in the extreme up position, as indicated in broken lines, Fig. 2, the corset or part of the corset is placed upon the former, and then the operator, placing his foot upon the pedal H, draws the bar G down,'which imparts a revolution to the two pinions e e, they in their turn giving an outward thrust to the respective racks d d, and through such outward thrust of the racks a like downward movement is imparted to each of the pressers, they,turning upon their axis a,strike the surface of the part of the corset on the former, and. continuing the downward movement with frictional bearing upon the corset on the former, draw that part of the corset down hard upon the former, and so that the part of the corset being moist it readily takes the shape of the former, and the former being hot quickly dries the part so shaped upon the former, such drying causing the part of the corset to retain the shape given to it by the former. Under this construction the framework above the table is dispensed with, making the machine more convenient for use.
The surface of the pressers is substantially concentric with the axis upon which they turn, so that they may produce a rubbing effect upon the corset, to gain the strongest possible purchase or power upon the corset to stretch it over the former.
Known mechanical equivalents for the racks and pinions, to impart the oscillating movement to the arms of the pressers, may be employed.
What I claim as an improvement upon my said Patent No. 329,414 is 1. The combination of a hollow former, B, adapted to receive steam or hot water therein, its outer surface corresponding to the shape of the part of the corset to be pressed, said former stationary, a pair of pressers, D D, hung upon pivots a, one each side of the said former, the axes of said pivots being parallel with the longitudinal axis of the former, the face of said pressers corresponding in shape to the shape of the former, and the said pressers provided with arms F, extending down through the table, with mechanism, substantially such as described, beneath the table, in
connection with said arms F F, whereby an up and down oscillating movement is imparted to said pressers, the one upon one side and the other upon the opposite side of the former, substantially as described.
2.
