URlNAL-FITTING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 341,310, dated May 4, 1886.
Application filed December 31, 1884. Serial No. 151,617. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Janus BARRETT, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Urinal-Fittings, of
which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This improvement in couplings or fittings for urinal-bowls consists in a horizontal gutter exteriorly surrounding the body of the fitting, preferably at its upper end, and a passage or passages leading from said gutter into the water-way of the fitting, all substantially as hereinafter described.
In the drawings the improved fitting for urinal-bowls above described is represented, and Figure l is a vertical section of a urinalbowl, waste-pipe, connecting-fitting for bowl and waste-pipe, and wall or partition supporting bowl and fitting. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the fitting detached and on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 is a central vertical section,from front to rear, of fitting and lower portion of bowl.
In the drawings, A represents a standing urinal bowl or basin of the ordinary construction.
B is the waste-water or discharge pipe of the bowl, and O is the improved fitting connecting said pipe and bowl.
F is the water way or passage of the fitting 0, running from the discharge-opening a of the bowl to the waste-pipe, for conducting and carrying off the water, 850., from the bowl to the waste-pipe. This water-way F consists of a vertical portion, K,and ahorizontal portion, S, which meet at and join with a depression or cavity, G, 1n'ojecting downward from the horizontal portion S and di rectly below the vertical portion K. This cavity G, in the use of the bowl, makes a receptacle for retaining water, as it passes through the fitting from the bowl, against passing off through the horizontal portion S of the fitting to the waste-pipe.
H is a partition or wall. extending entirely across the waterpassage F of the fitting, in front but in advance of the horizontal portion S thereof, and projecting downward below the water-level of the depression G, established by the horizontal position of the lower side of the horizontal portion S of the water-way F, and into the water retained in said depression,
of cleaning the fitting of obstructions,&c., and 6 5 with the screw stopper removed it obviously enables it to be done most readily. The screwstopper should make a close joint with the clean-out opening, and should be adapted to be attached and removed with readiness, and preferably made with a square head or projection, 0, for receiving a wrench to screw into and out of the opening.
L is a gutter surrounding the outside of the fitting, and preferably its upper end and just below the bowl, when the fitting is in place, and M is a vertical passage leading from said gutter downward and entered and opening into the water-way of the fitting, preferably, as shown,below the water-level of the water-trap ping recess G; but it may open to said waterway above said water-level. Opening the passage M to the water-way F below the waterlevel of the water-trap recess G obviously secures a water trapping or sealing of said passage. This gutter L and communicating pas sage M between it and the water-way F of the fitting operate to catch the drippings upon the outside of the bowl and to conduct and carry them into the water-way of the fitting, to be from thence carried off into the waste-pipe.
T is a hub interiorly shouldered at b, and making the upper part of the vertical portion K of the waterway F of the fitting. This hub T receives the nipple U of the bowl, lead ing from and making a part of and continuing the discharge-opening a of the bowl. The joint between the nipple of the bowl and the hub of the fitting is to be packed in any of the usual ways or otherwise suitably against leakage of water.
The outer end, Q, of the horizontal portion S of the fitting is exteriorly screw-threaded, as at d, and it receives a screwthreaded ferrule, W, which passes through and is within a hole, f, through the vertical wall or partition X, to which the bowl A is attached and which supports it, as usual. The ferrule exteriorly is shouldered at g, and it is entered into the waste-pipe and fastened thereto by a wiped joint of solder, or otherwise suitably fastened against accidental detachment and leakage.
Y is a screw nut or flange screwing upon the screw -threaded portion S of the fitting, and which is screwed upon it before screwing on the ferrule W. This screw-nut is jammed against the front side of the wall or partition X, to which the bowl is fastened, and thus the fitting is secured in place. Obviously, by this ferrule attachment of the fitting to the wastepipe and screw-nut attachment of the fitting to the partition supporting the bowl, the receiving end of the fitting for the bowl can be most accurately adjusted horizontally to its position to receive the nipple of the bowl when the bowl is fastened to the partition or wall.
The fitting for connecting a urinal-bowl to its waste-pipe, herein described, excepting the screw-stopper E, screw-ferrule \V, and screwnut Y, is preferably cast of metalsuch as brassin one piece, and a fitting for such purpose having'a water-trap or sealing-recess, G, a clea11 -out opening, D, a drip-catching gutter, L, and passage h/Lleading from it to the waterway F of the fitting, all combined and constructed substantially as described, and the the outside in lieu of upon the inside of said opening, or otherwise secured to the fitting for ready attachment and detachment.

In a coupling or fitting to make connection between a urinal-bowl and its water-way, a gutter, L, exteriorly surrounding the fitting, and a passage, M, leading from said gutter into the water-way, substantially as described,
for the purpose specified.
