UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.,
ELIZABETH WOOD, OE EvANsvILLE, INDIANA.
DRAFT-REGULATO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 341,300| dated May 4, 1886.
'Application filed November 23, 18:'5. Serial No. 183,749. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ELIZABETH WOOD, of
Evansville, in the county of Vanderburg and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft-Regulators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this speciiication, in which- Figure lis a view of my improved draft regulator applied to a chimney. Fig. 2 is a Fig. 3 is a longitudid its object is to provide a draft-regulator of simple and efficient construction and easily applicable to the various widths of chimneyilues.
The invention consists in the novel construction ofthe damper, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed lout in the appended claim. 1
In the drawings, A designates a rectangular castmetal frame, having the end plates, a a, connected by rods or bars a a. The rods and plates are preferably cast entire, but may be made separate, if desired, and united by proper iastenings. The rods a are grooved longitudinally on their inner edges at ai, and at their centers may be provided with stop-lugs au. The upper and lower edges of plates a are iianged or turned inward and upward at f, thus forming a continuous channel with the grooves a? in rods a', for the reception of sliding doors or dampers C C, hereinafter referred to.
B B are metal plates, shorter than but equal in width to the plates a a, and secured over these plates on their flanges a* by proper bolts The outer and upper surfaces of flanges a* of plates a are preferably recessed or depressed at I), for the reception ot' plates B, so that when securedto the frame A the plates B have their uppersurfaccs iiush with the upper surface of rods a. The plates B may be dispensed with. but are preferably used in order to strengthen the lrame and protect the doors C when open. The doors C are rectangular, and 'equal in length to or slightly longer than plates a. and are provided with ears c, for the purpose of opening and closing the d oors, and are Of sufficient width to fit snugly but easily in grooves of rods a and plates a. The inner corners of doors C may be cut away at c', to fit over lugs a, so that when the doors are closed they will form a close joint at their meeting edges.
The frame A is secured in position in the throat of a chimney or fine over an open grat-e or iire-place, as shown in Fig. l, or wherever it may be desired to have the damper, and is made air-tight or smoke-tight around its edges by mortar or other fire'proof material.
IVhen a fire is kindled on the grate, the
doors C C are opened, to allow free passage of the smoke. Afterward, when the fire is well kindled, they Inay be partially closed, thus preventing the rapid escape of the products ofcombustion up the flue, and,im radiating the heat out in the apartment, thereby greatly effecting a saving of fuel.
' rlhe width of opening between doors C C may be easily regulated by any person in the room.
' XVhen there is no lire in the grate, the doors may be closed, to prevent the entrance of cold air and dust into the apartment.
By forming the frame A with the plates a a at its ends it obviates the necessity for forming spaces or recesses in the sides of the line for the entrance of the doors when opened, and admits of the damper being applied to flues of different width.
rlhe platesB B are used to protect the doors when the frame A is applied to wide flues, but are not essential features of theinvention, though useful adjuncts of the same.
I am aware that flue dampers or regulators have been made having a series of doors arranged to open or close; also, that dampers IOO sliding rearwardly and outwardly in the back and sides of fines have been used. not claim; but
Vhat I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with frame A, composed of plates a a', flanged and grooved on their upl a., as described, of doors C C, moving in the Such I do I channels of the frame A, and provided with cars c and notches c', all constructed and adapted to operate substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I elai m the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two per and lower edges, andV connected by grooved witnesses. bars a a, the lower one of which is provided ELIZABETH VOOD. with a lug, a, the grooves of the rods forming Vihiesses:
Continuous channels with the grooves of the plates, and the plates B, secured over plates l LEE EssLINGER, E. E. LAW.
