Be it known that I, EZEKIEL VAN NOOR- DEN, of Boston, in the county of Suflolk and State of Massaehusetts, a eitizen of the United States, have imented a new and useful Iniprovement in Metallic Shingles, of wliich the following is a full, clear, and exact descriptien, reference beng had 1:0 the accompanying (lrawings, forming a part of tliis specifieation in explaining its nat-ure.
'1l1e invention relates to a metallic shingle having strengthening-ribs disposed in relation to eaeh other as hereinafter described, 1neans f0r securing the shingles t0 each other aud in a manner to provide a water-tight construetion, and in water-guards arranged aloug the edges of the shingles, as hereinafter speeified.
Referrng to the drawngs, Figure 1 represents in perspeetive a portion of a roof partially covered with my shingles. Fig. 2 is a section, enla1ged 011 the (lottecl line 10 x of Fig. 1. Tl1e shingles preferably are square in form aud are made from tin or other suitable sheet metal; but they are seeurecl to the roof with the point A uppermost. The two recesses 01 cavities a' a are connected with each other by a bead 01 rib, b"", formed imme diately adjacent to the edge, which provides a cavity 0r recess, 11'.

The next shingle, or the one to the left, is arranged so that its edge a extends Or overlaps upon the edge of the first shingle, and so that the water guard b* of the lower shingle extends into the cavity 0 of the other shingle, and the rib 01 bead b of the lower shingle is covered by the 1ib 0r bea(1 Zfi. ll1e next 01 fourth shingle has 1'ts lower end, a, restng upon the-seetion a of the third shingle in order.
Il will be seen that the shngles as finally arranged are of four thcknesses al, he oorners and of two thoknesses along the inter medate overlapping edges or seobions,and that at each corner 'nhe first.or nnderrnost: part is the Section a that (he corner of the next seetion in order rests thereon and has the finger or fastening projeelzion a", whoh extends npward therefrom throu g11 the hole formed by making the fastening projecton a ,that the next shingle in order also has a asnenng projeotion or finger, a whch extends throngh the hole a in the uppermost shngle, and whieh may also reoeve the finger or fastenng-ext-ension of the second shngle in order, and that: the corners of the shngles are thereby firmly l'astened or seeured together.
Of course in lieu of fastening fingers formed by striking up or cntting the metal of the shngle tself, I may use independent or separate fingers or fastenings seoured by solder, 01 by rivebing to the shngles, and adapted to be used snbstantally as are the fingers desoribed,with the exception that there wonl d be bnt one used on eaeh shingle, and it would be arranged to extend through holes formed in the corners of the other two smlar te t he hole1'n the lower corner of the shngle. By ths constrnotion the shingles are firmly secnred together, and a eontinnous double water-guard 'ormed abont eaoh shngle, and the shngle is at the same time strengthened by the rbs and edges wheh make or form the water-guards.
Of eonrse nalsor solder, 01 bothmay be nsed, ether with or without the lastenings above deserbed, for seonrng the shingles together and to the roof.
1n some nstanees, to provide additional stiffness or strengtah, the fingersa a are p'rovided with lengthwise oorrugatons, as shown in Fig 6.
