i COMMODORE B. CLARK, OF IVILLIAMS, CALIFORNIA.v
GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent Nc. 340,861, dated April 27, 1886.
Application filed December 31, 1885. Serial No. l8',lt29. (No model.)
.To @ZZ whom it' may concern:
Beit known that I, COMMODORE B. CLARK, a citizen of the United States of America, residing vat-Villiams, in the county of Colusa and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters orfigures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new au d useful improvements in vertically-swingi ng gates; and it consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and specilically pointed out in the claim. In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figurel is aperspective view. Fig. 2 is a side view showing` the gate in a position to close or obstruct the gateway in full lines and depressed in dotted lines.
A represents a frame-work which is sunk beneath the bed of the road, and is provided with a transverse slot, a, between which the bars b and b are pivoted. The lower portion of the transverse slot a is trough-shaped and is inclined so that any water that may collect therein will flow out of the opening a.
The frame A is provided at one end with vertical posts B I3, which are connected to each other by a cap-piece, B', so as to leave a vertical opening, c, between the same, and near the opposite end of the frame A are secured two parallel posts, C C, said posts having attached at their upper ends a cross-beam, D, the ends of which are provided with pulleys d d. The uprights or posts C C have secured between the same at a slight distance above the top of the gate a block, E, the end of which is bifurcatcd, and between said bifurcated portion is pivotally secured a lever, F, which lever' extends upwardly so that its end will play between the outwardly-exteudin g bars G, which are attached near the upper ends ofthe uprights C C. Between the outer endsof the bars G is pivoted a roller, g, over which pass cords, which also pass over pulleys g', which are attached above the crossbeam D, said cords passing from thence over the pulleys d. Guide-pulleys h are supported in a suitableframe under the beam D, and around these pulleys pass cords which are attached to the upper end of the lever F, said cords extending outwardly from said pulleys to the pulleys d. Thus it will be seen that by drawing upon the cords c the lever will be drawn toward the pulley g, and when the cords c are pulled upon the lever will be moved in an opposite direction. The bars Z) b' of the gate are each at their lower ends pivoted to the side walls of the slot a, and the bar Za at the end ofthe gate has a member, b, which projects at right angles thereto, and said mem ber carries at its outer end an adjustable counterbalancing weight, I. The rails f f of the gate are pivotally attached to the bars b b', and the upper rail is provided with a loop or hand-piece, fC
lVhen it is desiredto pass through the gate or depress the same within the slot, the cord e is drawn downwardly, which will move the lower end of the lever inwardly toward the lower end of the uprights C C, which carries with it thc member b of the bar b', the lower end of the lever being connected thereto by a chain, t, and after passing over the gate to close the same the cord c is drawn upon, which moves the lever F in an opposite direction, so as to raise the gate, said lever being connected to the member b by the chain i. Then the gate is closed, the member b will rest upon the block II, and when the gate is open or de pressed below the surface of the road-bed the end ofthe bifurcated block will serve as astop, so as to prevent the bar b tilting beyond its center.
The pulleys around which the operatingcords e c pass are protected from the weather by suitable casings or housings. I
Iam aware of the patent of La Baw,.No. 156,888, granted November 17, 1874, and also of the patent of Crandall,No.111,322, granted January 31, 1871, and I do not claim, broadly, any feature set forth in either of said patented constructions.
I claim-- In a folding gate, a casing located beneath the road-bed and provided with a slot in which are pivotally secured the ends of the bars Z) b', the bar b/ having' a member projecting at right ICO angles therewith, and provided with a weight, In testimony whereof I affix my signature in 1o the uprights C @,suppoitingzt bar, 1),@ frame, presence of two Witnesses. G, and block E, in combination With the puileys d d g g h, and cords e e', which pass COMMODORE B. CLARK. 5 over said pulleys' and are attached to the end of apvoted level', F, seid lever being cou- /Titiiesses:
neeted at its lower end to ythe bers b and b of JOHN STANLEY,
the gate, the parte being` organized substzm- H. C. CROWDER.,
tially as shownnd 'for the purpose set forth.
