To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN M. MOVEY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Lima, in the county of Allen and State of Ohio, haveinvented certain new and useful In1- provements in Stop and \Vaste Cocks; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and use ful improvements in cocks for cutting off the supply of water to a building or tank and allowing the water in the supply-pipes to es cape to a waste-pipe; and to this end my invention consists in a cut-off valve, the construction of which will be hereinafter fully set forth, and specifically pointed outin the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a side view of a valve constructed in accordance with my invention, means for operating the same being shown in connection therewith. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of a valve constructed in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 3 is a plan view of one of the valves detached.
A refers to a suitable casing or casting, which is preferably made of a single piece, the body portion A of said casting consisting of a cylindrical portion, A, which is adapted to be closed by a screw-threaded cover, a, which has on its outer side a projecting portion, with which the jaws of a wrench may engage in putting the samein place or removing the same from the casing. The casing A is supported 011 legs or uprights Z), the lower ends of which are turned outwardly, so that they may be bolted to the floor or other support.
0 refers to a projecting arm, the upper end of which is bifurcated, as shown at 0, so as to form side supports for the pivot, which holds the lever l) in place.
E refers to a depending portion, which is formed integral. with the casing, and is screwthreaded exteriorly on its lower end, while at a suitable point within the same it is provided with a valve-seat, c, beneath which the diame ter of this depending portion is enlarged, so as to provide a space in which the valve may play. Opposite the depending portion E the casing A. has an upwardly-projecting portion, F, formed integral therewith, and through this upwardly-projecting portion a bar or rod, G. passes. The upward]y-projecting portion F is screwthreaded, so that a cap, F, which is placed over the bar G, can be secured thereto, and packing, so as to form awater-tight joint, being inserted between the upward]y-projecting portion F and the cap F.
H refers to a projecting portion, which is screw-threaded exteriorly, so that the supplypipcs which distribute the water throughout the building can be attached thereto, and adjacent. to this projecting portion to which the supply-pi pc is attached is a similar projecting portion, 1, which is, near its outer end, reduced in diameter, so as to form a valve-seat, i7, and to this projecting port-ion I the inlet or supply pipe which leads from the street-mains or from suitable tank is connected. By this construction the casing A is provided with three openings through which the water may pass.
The bar or stem G is provided at its lower end with a valve, E, which is adapted to reciprocate within the depending portion E, and will {it snugly against the valve-seat e when the rod or stem is elevated. This stem G has also attached about its central portion a sleeve, G, which can be rigidly secured thereto, said sleeve having formed integral therewith outwardly-projecting ears 9 g, through which pass suitable bolts or screws for connecting thereto links K and K. The end of the link K is slotted, as shown at 7;, and through said slot passes a belt or screw, which engages with an outwardly-proiecting lug, which is formed integral with the casing A. The oppositelink, K. is alsopivotally secured between the ears 9 g at one end, while its opposite end is pivotally secured to a valve, 1, said valve reciprocating within the enlarged portion of the tube 1'. The valve is of ordinary construction, and has a packing secured to the face of the same, while its edges are fluted, as shown in Fig. 3, so that a passage-way will be provided between the pipe and the valve. The end of the bar or stem G is pivotally attached to the lever D,
and said lever is provided with a weight, D, which will have a tendency to hold the stem Gr elevated, so that the valve E therein will be held firmly against its seat 0, and when held in this position the valve I will also be held away from its seat.
When the valves are in the position shown in Fig. 2, the water will enter the supplypipes and pass into the hollow casing, and from thence will flow through the distributingpipes. Vhen it is desired to cut oil the flow of water from the distributing-pipes, the end of the lever D is elevated, thus depressing the stem G, which movement causes the valve 1 to abut against its seat '6, so as to close the supply-pipe and open the valve E. The water in the distributing-pipes will then flow through the connection H, and through the easing into the waste-pipe, thus cutting oil the supply of water to the building and permitting the distributing-pipes to be emptied.
L refers to a pivoted lever with. teeth thereon, which is supportedin asuitable frame, L, having side projecting pieces, Z, between which is located a sliding rack-bar, Z, which engages with the teeth of the lever. Said rackbar is connected to the end of the lever by suitable connection, as shown, and by depressing the lever L the lever D will be raised, for the purpose hereinbefore stated.
By providing the stem G with a link, K, an outward pressure can be communicated to the valve 1 without throwing the stem G- off the center, and as each of the links K K will bind against their bearings the links cannot be depressed beyond a horizontal position.
By providing the stem G with an adjustable sleeve the valves E and L can be adjusted so as to coact, so that when the supply-valve is moved away from its seat the cut-off valve will bear firmly against its seat and prevent the water flowing through the same.
I claim- 1. A valve for the purpose set forth, a oasing having a removable cap, and-inwardlyprojecting pin formed integral with or at tached to one of the sides of the casing for the reception of the slotted end of a link, said link being attached to an adjustable sleeve secured 011 the valve-stem, so as tolimit the play of said stem, in combination with the valves E and I, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
2. A easing, A, provided interiorly with a vertical reciprocating valve-stem, G, a sleeve, G, adj ustabl y secured thereon, said sleeve having projecting ears 9, to which are piv0tally attached links K and K, one of said links being slotted and connected to the casing, while to the other is attached a sliding valve, a valve, E, attached to the base of the same, the parts being combined and organized sub stantially as shown, and fonthe purpose set forth.
