SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 340,710, dated ,April 27, 1886.

To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS C. ENTWISTLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lowell, in the county of Middlesex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Mechanism for Stripping the Flats of Garding-Machines, of which the following is aspecification.
My invention relates to mechanism for moving the stripper-card faster while said card is stripping a flat than when it is moving from one fiat to another, and to make the change from the fast speed to the slow speed quicker.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a carding-engine provided with the well-known Wellman stripper and my improvement, a part of the frame being broken away to show a part of the main cylinder; Fig. 2, a front elevation of a part of the main shaft, the frame of the stripping mechanism, its pulley, gears, and cam, and the lever actuated by said cam to open and close the friction-clutch, said clutch being shown in central Vertical section; Fig. 3, an elevation of the outer side of the pawlcarrying sprocket-wheel, its pawls being shown by dotted lines; Fig. 4, an elevation of the outer side of the loose pulley which forms apart of the friction-clutch; Fig. 5, an elevation of the outer side of the sliding part of said frictionclutch; Fig. 6, an isometric view of the lever, which is actuated by the cam to open and close the clutch; Fig. 7, an isometric View of the adjustable fulcrum on which said lever turns and the adjustable bracket which supports the same; Fig. 8, a central horizontal section of said bracket, the fulcrum and its binding and adjusting devices being in plan; Fig. 9, an isometric view of the cam which operates the friction-clutch lever, the four following figures relating to a modification of the means of driving the loose pulley at its slow speed, and Fig. 10 being an elevation of the outer side of the loose pulley, omitting the ratchet shown in Fig. 4; Fig. 11, an elevation of the outer sidesprocket-wheel on the main shaft, a part of the main shaft being shown in side elevation.
The invention hereinafter describedis an improvement on what is known as the Vellman stripper, and is somewhat similar to the improvement described in Letters Patent No. 291,471, dated January 1, 1884; but instead of the high-speed fast pulley and the low-speed loose pulley shown in said patent, and means for shifting the belt which drives the stripping mechanism from one to the other of said pulleys to vary the speed of said stripping mechanism,I use a pulley loose on the main shaft, which pulley serves both for a high-speed pulley and alow-speed pulley. For the low speed, asin thepatent referred to,said loosep ulley is driven by a disk turning loosely on the main shaft, and provided with pawls which engage the hub of said loose pulley, the disk being rotated independently of said main shaft. In my invention the high speed is given to the stripping mechanism by africtionelutch, half of which is formed by said loose pulley and the other half of which slides on said main shaft, and is caused to rotate therewith by a spline on said shaft, and is automatically engaged with said loose pulley, causing said loose pulley, when so engaged, to revolve at the same rate of speed as the main shaft, the high speed being used when the stripping mechanism is operated to strip a raised flat. The frame of the stripping mechanism swings backward and forward around the main shaft A of the main cylinder A in the usual manner, being impelled by the usual means. The stripper B is supported by arms I) at opposite ends of the main cylinder A each arm being moved by a cam, B in the customary manner. The cam B is provided with radial teeth, which engage with a pinion, c, secured to the same shaft with a gear, b, which gear engages with the pinion a, secured to a band-pulley, (1, concentrically therewith. A belt, 0, connects said band-pulley and the loose pulley s on the main shaft A the latter being driven by the pulley shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, over which passes the belt f, also shown partly in dotted lines. The hub of the loose pulley sis provided with a ratchet, t. On said main shaft, outside of said loose pulley s, is a disk, 9*, substantially like the disk designated by the IOO s elojiio same letter in the patent referred to, except that in this instance the disk is provided with radial teeth or pins 1*, which constitute it a sprocket-wheel. The shaft 9, as described in said patent, is driven in unison with the railway apparatus, and has apulley, 9, connected by a belt, g", to the pulley g and drives the shaft 2, (to which said pulley g is fast,) which shaft 2, by means of the gear 9*, secured on said shaft 2, and another gear, 9 fast on the doffer-shaft g, revolves said doffer-shaft and the doffer secured thereto. The feed-rolls are connected with the doffer, substantially as shown in said patent, by means of a cross-shaft and gears (Not represented in the drawings.) The gear engages with another gear, 9 which turns on a stud, g projecting horizontally from the frame of the carding-engine, and a small sprocket-wheel, T is secured to said last-named gear concentrically therewith, and is connected by a chain, S, to the sprocket wheel or disk r.
The sprocket wheel or disk r is provided with pawls 7, which engage the teeth of the ratchet it, formed on the hub of said loose pulley s. The loose pulley is therefore driven from the doffer, by means of the gear 9 and the chain and sprocket-wheels, at a low speed. A cam, J, substantially like that shown in said patent, and designated by the same letter, actuates the clutch-operating lever 6 pivoted upon a bracket, c secured to the frame of the stripper. The lower end of said clutch-lever e is forked and provided with studs e, which enter an annular groove, It, in the hub is of the sliding female part K of the friction-clutch above named. Said sliding part K is caused V to rotate with the main shaft A by a spline,
' ratchet-teeth at such times run away from the pawls r.
In the modification shown in Figs. 10 to 13 the hub of the loose pulley sis cylindrical and without teeth, and the sprocket wheel or disk 1' is provided with friction-pawls r, of the wellknown form shown in Figs. 11 and 12, each of these pawls rhaving a curved outer face, and turning loosely on a stud, r projecting from the inner face of said disk 1" into the annular chamber 8 formed in the outer side of said loose pulley, and bearing against the outer wall of said annular chamber, and causing said loose pulley to revolve with the same speed as said disk 0, except when a higher speed is communicated to said loose pulley by the means above described, at which times thepulley slips on the pawls, the pawls being pivoted nearer to their rear ends,and being curved at their rear ends concentrically with the stud, on which they turn in a Well-known manner.
The bracket 6 is provided with a foot which rests against the side of the frame of the stripper, and is secured thereto by a bolt, 6 and nut 6 The foot of the bracket 6 has a transverse slot, to allow the bracket to be moved forward or back to adjust the position of the clutch-lever e to bring the studs 6 equally into the annular groove is of the part K of the friction-clutch. The fulcrum on which said clutch-lever turns consists of a stud, 1, provided with a shoulder, 19, which rests against the bracket, said stud extending through a transverse slot, 6 in the projecting part of said bracket and having a threaded end.
The stud P is retained in the bracket by a nut, p,which turns on its threaded end against a washer, p and presses said washer against the bracket and pinches the bracket between said shoulder 10 and said washer. An adj usting-screw, Q turns in a threaded hole in said bracket at right angles to the stud I, and thrusts against the shank of said stud I? between said shoulder and said washer, andenables said stud P to be slightly adjusted out-' ward from the frame of the stripper to crowd the part K of the friction-clutch into closer contact with the loose pulley s, the slot 6 having a sufficient horizontal length to allow the adjustment above described.
I do not claim as a part of my invention, broadly, the combination of the main shaft, the stripping mechanism and its frame, the pulley turning loosely on said shaft, a belt connecting said pulley and said stripping mechanism, mechanism for rotatingsaid pul-r ley independently of said shaft at a speed less than the speed of said shaft, said pulley forming one part of a clutch and the other part of said clutch sliding on said shaft and rotating therewith and adapted to be engaged with said loose pulley to rotate the same at the speed of said main shaft,and means for engaging and disengaging the parts of said clutch at predetermined times. Neither do I claim, broadly, the stripping mechanism combined with a disk, and a means of driving the same, thepulley provided with means for engaging with the disk, a means actuated from the stripping mechanism for engaging the pulley with the disk, and means of driving the stripping mechanism from the pulley.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination of the main shaft, the stripping mechanism and its frame, the pulley turning loosely on said main shaft,a disk loose on said shaft, and means, as described, of rotating the same independently thereof, and adapted to engage said loose pulley and to rotate the same, said loose pulley forming one part of a clutch, the other part of said clutch sliding on said main shaft and rotating therewith, and adapted to be engaged with said loosepulley,to rotatethe same at a speed great e'r than that of said disk, and means, as described, for engaging and disengaging the parts of said clutch at predetermined times, as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the mainshaft, the stripping mechanism and its frame, the pulley turning loosely on said main shaft, a disk pro- Vided with pawls adapted to engage said loose pulley, means of rotating said disk independently of said shaft, said loose pulley forming one part of a clutch, and the other part of said clutch sliding on said shaft and rotating therewith, and adapted to be engaged with said loose pul1ey,to rotate the same at a speed greater than the speed of said disk, and means, as described, for engaging and disengaging parts of said clutch at predetermined times, as and for the purpose specified.
3. The combination of the main shaft provided with a spline, the pulley loose on said shaft and forming part of a friction-clutch, the other part of said friction-clutch provided with a groove and sliding on said shaft and caused by said spline to rotate therewith, said loose pulley being provided with a ratchet concentric therewith, a disk turning loosely on said shaft and provided with pawls adapted to engage the teeth of said ratchet, and means for rotating said disk at a slower speed than the speed of said shaft, and means, as described, for engaging and disengaging the parts of said clutch at predetermined times, as and for the purpose specified.
