Description

(No Modell) P. WERUM.
ROPE CLAMP.
Patented Apr. 27, 1886.
Nv PETERS. Pholo'ulhognplur. Wuhingwn, D. Q
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PHILLIP \VERUM, OF STRYKER, OHIO.
ROPE-CLAM P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 340,645, dated April 27, 1886.
Application filed December 23, 1885. Serial No. 186,595. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILLIP WERUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stryker, in the county of \Villiams and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hope Clamps and Binders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to rope clamps and binders, and has for its object the provision of an article of the class named having means for quickly catching and securely holding in position the ropes or bands of bales, bundles, &c.
To this end the invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts substantially as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents an elevation of my improved rope clamp and binder as it appears when in use. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof, and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line as m of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, in which simi lar letters of reference denote similar parts,
A designates the body of the clamp, the up per portion, a, of which is flattened at its sides, as shown, and provided at or near its upper end with an aperture, to, to receive the cord B, which is tied thereto. The body A extends in a curved direction to its lower gripping-jaw, a, at which point itis flattened or widened laterally, and provided with an edge sharp enough to take into the cord or rope without cutting the strands thereof.
A designates a handle projecting from the lower surface of the body A ator near its lower end or grippingjaw a O designates a grippingjaw, hinged or pivoted to the body A at apoint intermediate of its ends, as shown.
The free end 0 of the gripper G is hookshaped, having its inner surface slightly rounded, and provided with rounded upper and lower edges, 0 c and extends backward to a point about half the length of the gripper 0, thus insuring the continuance 'of the rope within the hook O.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The rope B,having been passed about the object to be clamped, passes in the direction of the arrow at into the hook 0 between the lower edge, o of said hook and the lower end, a",of the body A. When in this position, force applied to the loop of the cord operates to press the lower edge, 0', of the hook downward over the end of the jaw a and thus clamp or pinch the cord between said jaw and the inner surface of the hook G.
In the drawings I have shown the cord as simply passing from top to bottom of the hook C; but it should be understood, however, that said cord may be passed first about the handle A, thence over the hook G, and then drawn between the jaws a 0 or in any other desired manner.
Having thus described all embodiments of my invention, I would have it understood that I reserve the right to change the form and proportions of inydevice, as herein described, without departing from the essential features of my invention, as herewith shown and described.
W'hat I claim is 1. In a rope clamp or binder, a body having an aperture to receive acord, agrippingjaw, and a releasing-handle, in combination with a hinged gripping-jaw, substantially as described.
2. In a ropeclamp or binder, a hinged gripping-jaw having a hook-shaped outer end, in combination with a body having a hinged gripping-jaw, substantially as described.
3. In a rope clamp or hinder, a hinged grippingjaw having a hookshaped outer end, in combination with a body having an aperture to receive a cord, a gripping-jaw, and a releasing-handle, substantially as described.
4. In a rope clamp or binder, a body having a releasing-handle and a stationary gripping-jaw, substantially as described.
5. In a rope clamp or binder, a body having astationary gripping-jaw, in combination with a hinged grippingjawhaving a broad curved rope-bearing surface, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
PHILLIP VVERUM.
