The object ot" the improvement consists in taking gas, water, steam, or other vapor from a high-pressure service-pipe and distributing it at any given reduced pressure, according to zo the needs ot' the service.
With the above objects in view my invention consists in the following construction and arrangement, which will first be fully'set forth and described, and the features of novelty beleved to be new then set forth in the claims.
Referring to the drawings and to the same parts by the same figures of reference, 1 represents the cylinder or valve to which the highpressure servicepipeis connected at the open-A ing 2. Cylinder 3 is the equalizing pressurereducing cylinder. f
4 6 is a plunger cylindrical cut-oil'. It is made in two parts, united by a series of tiepieces, 5. These tie-pieces 5 on theinnerside of the cut-oft' cylinder are preferably four in number, disposed at equal distances apart, and connect the two parts of the cutoff rigidly. The head 7 of the upper part, 6, is closed, and the lower part, 4, of the cylindrical plunger is y. open.
8 is the valvestem of the plunger t 6. It passes-through the head 9 of the cylinder 1 by means of a duid-tight stuffing-box, 10.
11 is an annular fluid-passage castor formed with the cylinder 1. It communicates with the interior of the cylinder 1 throughout the circumference of the latter. The opening 2 for the high-pressure pipe registers with the passage 11. Cylinder 1 is preferably formed 5o with the head 12 at its lower end, integral therewith, while the upper head, 9, is secured by a flangcd joint and screw-bolts.

15 is a lever arm or rod, pivoted at one end to the link 1l and at the other to the hollow plunger-stem 17. Lever 15 is connected to the plunger-valve stem 8 ot' cut-ott 4 6, between ]ink 14 and stem 17.
16 is a sliding weight traversing the leverarm 15. and serves to regulate the pressnrein the distributing-pipe at any reduced head desired.
18 is a hollow plunger of cylindrical form 55 adapted to t tightly within the openeended cylinder 3. Plungcr 18 has ailnd-tiglit head at its upper end,where the stem 17 is secured, the lower end only being open.
19 is the distributing low-pressure pipe. It 7o is connected with the cylinders 1 and 3, and from thence leads to the source of supply. A T-connection, 20, and branch pipe 21 form the communication with cylinder 3.
Secured to branch pipe 21, or to the lower head of cylinder 3,isan enlarged pipe, 22, having an open top, and extending nearly the length ofcylinder3.l Pipe 22 is nearly the diameter of plunger-cylinder 18. Cylinder 3 basa series of annular recesses, 23, or corruga- 8O tions.
Exteriorily to pipe 22, but within the cylinder 3, is an annular space intended for the movement of the plunger-cylinder 18 therein,
and also for receiving a quantity of mercury,
oil, or other suitableliquid. The liquid stands in the cylinder up tothe annular recesses 23, wherein it serves as an effective packing for the plunger, and prevents the escape of the .fluid which is being regulated. The mercury or oil also fills the space between the exterior of pipe 22 and interior of plunger 18, and performs the same oiTice-that is, prevents the escape of the regulated duid.
If'desirable,pipe 22 may be dispensed with g5 and some other known form of packing may be given plunger 18 other than fluid mercury or oil.
Lever 15 is shown passing through a knifeedged slot in valve-stem 8. Said .stem may be simply piroted to the lever 15, if desired, and plunger-stent 17 may be provided withaknifeedged slotto allow the necessary endwise movement of lever 15.
24 is aslotin lever 15to allow asimilar Inovement. The pivotal pin ol' stein 17 passes through the slot.
In operation (supposing the position of the operative parts to be as represented in Fig. 1) the pressure from the source of supply entering at opening 2 passes into and raround the annular passage 11. From thence it passes between the two parts of the valve 4 6. Head 7 of' this valve prevents the escape of Huid in an upward direction. It therefore passes through the distributingpipe 19 and pipe 21, where it exerts its force against the head of hollow plunger 18. The pressure thus exerted against-the plunger 18 and valve 4 6 causes them both to move upwardly, when the midopening of the later gradually cuts off the high-pressure service by passing gradually be' youd the annular passage 11 in the cylinderl. Upon such movement taking place the pressnre in hollow plunger 18 is gradually lessened, and ceases to exert a preponderance of motion before the valve 4 6 cuts the supply entirely off. Veight 16 is slid along to such position upon thelever-arm 15 as will secure the regulation ot' the supply at any reduced pressure which may be desired.
Having described 1nyinvention,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A cylinder having an annular opening, and a tubular valve or cut-oli` located in the cylinder having an annular opening therein, andan iinpert'orate head against which the steam-pressure is exerted, in combination with a plungercylinder containing the plunger, lever-connections between the valve and plunger` and pipe-connections between the same, substantially as set forth.
2. Av fluid-pressure pipe, an automatic cutoi' valve located therein, an exterior corrugated cylinder, an interior cylinder fastened thereto, a liquid 4arranged between the two cylinders, and a piston-plunger working in the exterior cylinder, with lever-conncctions between it and the cut-off valve, the whole in combination, essentially as set forth.
3. In a duid-pressure regulator, a Valvechamber, a tubular valvelocated in said charnber having an inlperforate head at one end and an open head at the other, and steam-ports in both the chamber and valve, in combination with a cylinder havinga piston, and lever and pipe connections between the same, as specified.
4. A tluidlpressure pipe. an automatic cutoff valve located therein, a cylinder containing a liquid, atubular plunger havingaclosed head at one end Working in the `cylinder and liquid, and lever and pipe connections between said cylinder and the cutoff valve, all in combination, as set forth.
