UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN C. MINEO, OF BUNKER HILL, ILLINOIS.
TUBE-CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 340,344, dated April 20, 1886.
Application filed March 20, 1885.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN C. MINEo, of Bunker Hill, in the county of Macoupin and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Boiler-Tube Cutter, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved device or implement for cutting off boiler-tubes within the boiler in case the tubes must be removed.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of my improved boiler'tube cutter. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal view of the same. Fig. 3 is'a cross sectional view of the same on the line at m, Fig. 1. p
The tubular stock A is provided with a tapered end or shank, B, which is provided at its end with a squared or polygonal part, C, fitting a key, by means of which the stock can be turned. The stock A is provided with the longitudinal slotD, and the part 0 is provided with the slot E. extending entirely through it, as shown in Fig. 1. A wedge-piece, F, is passed through the stock, and is provided with the grooves G in its sides along the'beveled edge. and with the groove H along the straight edge.
In the slot D of the stock A a block, I, is placed, which has a longitudinal groove in its bottom for receiving the beveled edge of the wedge-piece F. Pins J pass from the sides of the said groove in the block into the grooves G in the wedge-piece, and pins K project from the sides of the stock into thegrooves H. A cuttingdisk L,-is pivoted in the block I, the plane of a? cutter being at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the block. The shalt L of the cutter-disk is in a groove in the block, so as not to project from the top of the block. A stem, M, projects from the inner end of the wedge-piece F through the shank B, and has its outer end screw-threaded. A nnt N, of the same size and shape as the squared part 0 of the shank is screwed on the threaded part of the stem M. A spiral Serial No. 159,553. (No model.)
spring, 0, surrounds the stem M, between the end of the slot E and the end of the wedge- I piece F, and presses the latter in the direction of the arrow a.
The operation is as follows: Before inserting the implement, the wedgepieceF is moved in the direction of the arrow at, whereby the block I is drawn into the stock to such an extent that the cutter-disk L .does not project. The implement is then inserted, and by means of a key the nut N is turned to move the stem M and wedge-piece F in the inverse direction of the arrow a, the wedge-piece being guided by the pins K. The edges of the grooves G, acting on the pins J of the block I, force the block outward, and press the cutting-edge ofthe cutter against the inner surface ot the boiler-tube. The key is then pushed inward, so that the part Gpasses into the key, and the instrument is turned by means of the key, the cutter L cutting into the tube. The cutter is gradually moved outward by turning the nut N. In casethe tube has a greater diameter than the stock, an cecentric sleeve, P, havinga llange,Q, is slipped on the stock, the sleeve being held in place by a binding-screw, S, with the full side opposite the cutter.
Havingthus described inyinvention, what I claim as new, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the slotted stock A, of the grooved cuttenblock I, fitted in the slot of the stock and provided with the pins J. and the wedge-piece F, fitted in the groove ot'the cutter-block and provided with grooves G to receive the pins J, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with the stock A, of the block I, carryinga cutter, the wedge-piece F, having the grooves G and H, the pins J, projectingfrom the block I into the grooves G, and the pins K, projecting from the stock into the grooves H, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. The combination, with the stock A, the cutter-block I, and the wedge-piece F, of the flanged sleeve 1? Q. surrounding the stock and removably secured thereto, substantially as herein shown and described.
JOHN G. MINEO.
