l UNrrEE STATES CHARLES TURNER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
ATTACHMENT FOR LOCOlVlOTlVE SMOKE-STACKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 340,259, dated April 20, 1886.
Application filed October 15, 1884. Serial No. 145,614. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES TURNER, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Chicago, in the county of' Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Locomotive Smoke-Stacks, which are fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure l is a side elevation of a locomotive having my device attached to its smoke stack; Fig. 2, a front elevation ot' my device attached to a smoke-stack; Fig. 3, a plan view of the same; and Fig. 4, a sectional view on the line a: w of Fig. 3, va portion being also shown on an enlarged scale.
Like letters refer to like parts in all the figures.
My invention relates to devices to be attached to locomotive smoke-stacks in order to prevent the smoke and cinders issuing therefrom from descending upon the train; and to that end it consists in certain novel features, which I will now proceed to describe, and then specifically point out in the claims.
In the drawings, A indicates a locomotive of the usual construction, and B the smoke stack thereof. At the front of the locomotive I attach a large funnel, C, from the rear end of which a large pipe, c, extends upward in front and nearly to the top of the smoke-stack B. From the Lipper end of pipe c a smaller pipe, D, surrounding the smoke-stack, branches out, as shown, the two divergent portions extending upward and rearward, as shown, and the upper portion, D', being located back of and somewhat below the opening b of the smoke-stack at its broadest point. This upper horizontal portion, D', of pipe D has a slot, d, as shown, extending the entire length of its upper side. To the front side of the part D', I attach a guard, E, consisting of a plate extending upward as high as the eX- treme upper edge of the smoke-stack. This guard-plate also serves to secure the pipe to the stack.
The operation of my device/is as follows: When the locomotive is in motion, the air enters the funnel C and passes up through pipe cinto pipe D, finally issuing from slot d in a sheet with great force. This sheet of air forms a shield or barrier immediately behind the orifice b, from which the smoke issues, preventing it from passing immediately backward and downward upon the train. The airshield causes the body of smoke and cinders to rise to a height sufficient to carry it clear of the train. By this means one of the most objectionable features ot'fraveling is avoided.
The guard E prevents any breaking of the air-current before it has reached a position in which it will be operative. This shield may, however, be dispensed with, although I deem its use preferable.
It is obvious that many mechanical modifications may be made in the construction without departing from the principle of my invention, and I therefore do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise details of construction shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, with a locomotive smoke-stack. of pipe D, encircling the same, and having the slotted portion D around the rear upper edge of the stack, and a pipe, c, connecting pipe D with a funnel, C, arranged as described. substantially as and for the purposes specified.
2. The combination, with the smoke-stack B, of pipe D, having slotted portion D', arranged as described, guard E, attached thereto, pipe c, and funnel C, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
CHARLES TURNER.
