RAYMOND KAVSE'N ATTORNEY United States Patent I 3,402,502 MULTIPLE BUBBLE BLOWING DEVICE Raymond Kaysen, 1341 N. Mascher St., Philadelphia, Pa. 19122 Filed Sept. 17, 1965, Ser. No. 488,189 r 2 Claims. (Cl. 46-6) 'ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to a bubble blowing device and more particularly to a device which permits the blowing of a multitude of small bubbles within a single larger bubble.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a multiple bubble blowing device that is simple and easy to operate and is positive in its operation.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a multiple bubble blowing device that is simple and in expensive to construct and which presents an attractive appearance.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a multiple bubble blowing device that can be molded of synthetic plastic material.
Other objects and advantageous features of the invention will be apparent from the description and claims.
The nature and characteristic features of the invention will be more readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part thereof, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a view in perspective showing a multiple bubble blowing device in accordance with the invention;
FIG. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken approximately on the line 2-2 of FIG. 1 showing the device in one operating position;
FIG. 3 is a fragmentary view similar to FIG. 2 showing the device in another operating position and;
FIG. 4 is a vertical sectional view taken approximately on the line 44 of FIG. 3.
It should, of course, be understood that the description and drawings herein are illustrative merely, and that various modifications and changes can be made in the structure disclosed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings in which the device is illustrated, the multiple bubble blowing device includes an outer tapered cylindrical wall 10, providing a shell, an inner cylindrical shell assembly 11 and valve assembly 12.
The outer wall can be provided with radial fins 14 on its outermost surface 15 extending lengthwise of the wall 10 as desired, the fins giving an attractive appearance to the device and facilitating the holding and manipulation of the device. The wall 10 tapers inwardly at one end as at 10' and the taper terminates at a mouthpiece 16 which is shown as being of relatively straight cylindrical shape. The wall 10, at the opposite end of the mouthpiece 16, has a flat rim 20 which is at a 90 angle to a horizontal plane passing through the end of the wall 10 and which rim 20 extends outwardly around the periphery of the wall 10. The rim 20 terminates at an inside surface 21 of the wall 10 and has a face 22 which extends outwards of the surface 15 andterminates at an edge 23. a r
The inner cylindrical shell assembly 11 has a rear inner tube 13 which extends slightly more than one half the length of the outer wall 10 and at one end is integral with the wall portion 10' at a junction 25. A siren or whistle 26 of conventional type can be provided forinsertion in the tube 13 at a section 28. The tube 13 terminates at the end opposite to the mouthpiece 16 at a front edge 30.
The valve assembly 12 extends into the tube 13, and has an actuating arm 31, hollow cylindrical portion 32 with slots 33 near its outer end, and closing end cap 34. The end cap 34 has a rim 35 with an inner end face 36.
The arm 31 of the valve assembly 12 is slidably mounted and retained in a slot 17 in the outer wall 10, which slot 17 permits of limited movement of the arm 31.
An additional front inner shell 40 is provided having an inwardly extending rim 41 which provides a stop for the rim 35. The rim 35 is of lesser diameter than the interior of the shell 40 to permit of the passage of air along its periphery when the rim 35 is moved away from the rim 41.
The inner shell 40 at its outer end has an end rim 42.
The end rim 42 is flat and at a angle to the outside of the shell 40 and has a face 47 which extends inwardly andterminates at an opening 46 which is preferably concentric with the opening 21. The opening 46 in the shell 40 can be of any suitable size and as explained below to obtain bubbles of a desired diameter. The face 47 is preferably in the same plane as the face 22. Inside of the inner surface 21 of the outer wall 10 reinforcing fins 50 are provided which are integral with this inside surface and extend inwardly and along the shell 40 in integral engagement therewith to provide support to the shell 40, and maintain the shell at a predetermined distance from the inside of the wall 10. The fins 50 terminate inwardly of the rims 20 and 42 at 55.
It will thus be seen that a passageway 51 is provided in the interior of the tube 13 with which the mouthpiece 16 is in communication. A passageway 52 is provided between the interior of the shell 10 and the exterior of the inner shell 40 for delivery of air toward the rim 20, and a passageway 53 is provided within the inner shell 40 for delivery of air toward the rim 42.
The mode of operation will now be pointed out. The device is assembled as illustrated. A dish or container of a suitable liquid material of low surface tension such as aqueous soap solution and capable of forming bubbles is provided. The end having rims 20 and 42 opposite to the mouthpiece 16 is dipped into the solution, coating the faces 22 and 47 of rims 20 and 42 with liquid and which forms a film across the faces 22 and 47.
The arm 31 is moved in the slot 17 to its rearmost position as shown in FIG. 2 to cut off flow of air to the passageway 53. The mouthpiece 16 is placed to the mouth and air expelled into it.
The air passes through the whistle or siren 26 which emits its characteristic sound. The air then passes through the passageway 51 in the tube 13, hollow cylinder 32 and passes out the slots 33 in the cylinder 32 and into and along the passageway 52. The air can escape in only the direction outward of the wall 41 and between the outside surface 44 of the wall 41 and the inner surface 15, of the shell 10 by reason of the engagement of the rim 35 against the rim 41. The air forces out the liquid which bridges the faces 22 and 47 of the end rims 20 and 42 thereby forming a large bubble.
The operator, when a bubble of the desired shape is obtained, manually moves the arm 31 to its most forward position in the slot 17. The slots 33 of the cylinder 32 in this position are inside of the wall 44, and air is pre vented from flow into the passageway 52 because of the close fitting in the end opening of the shell 40 of the cylinder 32. The air may flow only to and through the passageway 53. The air is forced against the film of liquid which closes the opening 46 of the shell 40 and forms many small bubbles continuing until the large bubble is unable to resist the outward urging and the adhesive action of the liquid retaining it on face 22 is overcome. The large bubble containing the small bubbles then floats off.
The valve 12 can be operated in the sequence as described or vice versa. Large bubbles alone, or small bubbles alone can be blown by movement of the arm 31 of the valve assembly 12 to the desired position.
I claim:
1. A multiple bubble blowing device comprising an elongated outer shell having a rim at one end for bubble film support with an opening,
an elongated inner shell disposed within the outer shell and having a rim at one end contiguous to and concentric with said first mentioned rim for bubble film support with an opening,

said inner shell having rearwardly of said one end longitudinally spaced valve guiding portions,
said inner and outer shells having a passageway therebetween communicating with said outer shell rim and said inner shell having a passageway therein communicating with said inner shell rim,
4 one of said valve guiding portions being in communication on one side thereof with one of said passageways and on the other side thereof with the other of said passageways, and valve means for determining the distribution of air from said mouthpiece through said passageways to said rims, said valve means having a tubular valve member slidably carried by said inner shell member and engaging said guiding portions, said valve member having ports controlled by their positioning with respect to said one of said guiding portions for cutting off the flow through said passageways to either of said rims and for determining the relative distribution of air through said passageways to said rims. 2. A multiple bubble blowing device as defined in claim 1 in which a manual positioning handle is provided carried by said valve member and extending through a slot in said outer shell for manual access.
