' H. S. PAYNE.
WHIFFLETREE. No. 340,151. Patented Apr. 20, 1886.
MIA/5.985s.- INVE/VTOR a. fdWM/z zw J M,
A /41 hm A TTOR/VEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY SILAS PAYNE, OF CAMDEN, NEW JERSEY.
WHIFF'LETREE.
EEPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 340,151, dated April 20,1886.
Application filed October 28 1885. Serial No. 181,177. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY SILAS PAYNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Camden, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Whiffletrees; and 1 do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.
My invention is designed to improve the construction of whiffletrees so that the full strength of the wood shall be preserved, and so that the irons may be easily applied to or removed from the wood-work.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the nature of the invention, Figure 1 presenting it in a plan view, and Fig. 2 being an enlarged view of my clevis rnb-iron. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are details.
The various parts of the invention are referred to by letters, similar letters denoting corresponding parts throughout the drawings.
The letterA represents the swing-bar or evener.
a a are clevises to connect the evener to the single-trees.
B B are straps secured to the ends of the evener, hinged at b, and having the arched portion 1) adapted to fit over the clevises a a and retain them in position. The free ends of the straps B B are held in place by springs c a, or some equivalent device.
H is a double clevis wit-h an arch, 71, provided with a hook, G.
On the front edge of the bar A is a strap, or, having an eye, it, for the king-bolt. The
ends of the strap or pass between the bar A and the clevis H, by which it is kept in place. The clevis H is tightened upon the bar A by one or more wedges, e, driven in between them.
D D are single-trees connected with the clev- "ises a a by clasps or stirrups E E, similar to clevis H. These clasps are slipped upon the single-trees from the end, and are secured in position by the wedges e e.
F F are bands and tug-hooks on the singletrees, and are held in position by the wedges ffin the same manner as the clevises E E.
I is a rubiron adapted to be placed in the arch h of the clevis H. Its outer edge is concave, to admit the arch h, and its claws M are bent around the arch h and into the recesses l I, provided for them, by which means the rubiron is kept in place. When one iron is worn through, another may be easily put in its place,
' and so the clevis will be protected from wear.
Rub-iron may be also used on the whiffletreeclevises E E.
By the use of my invention it is not necessary to bore holes through the wood or otherwise lcssen its full strength. I also avoid the use of rivets, bolts, and nuts, which are liable to work loose and fall out.
In case of breakage a new bar can be supplied by simply knocking out the wedges and slipping the irons upon the new single-tree or swing-bar.
Having now described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. In combination with the swing-bar A, having hinged straps B B, with arches b b and springs a o, the clevises a a, and double clevis H, having the arch h,with recesses Z Z, and being provided with a hook, G, the rub-iron I, with claws z z, the strap m, having the eye a, and the wedges e,substantially as herein described.
2. The combination of the swing-bar A, having straps B B, with arches b b and springs c c, clevises a a, and double clevis H, having the arch h, a strap, m, having an eye, a, the wedge e, the single-trees D D, having double clevises E E, wedges e e, tug-hooks F F, and wedges f f, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY SILAS PAYNE.
