Description

No. 34.009. y .PATENTBD DE@` 24, 1861.
. no, PAYNE.
FOLDING BEDSTEAD.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK C. PAYNE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
FOLDING BEDSTEAD.
Specification of Letters Patent No To all whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, FREDERICK C. PAYNE, of the city, county, and State of New York,` have invented a new and Improved Folding Bedstead; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a longitudinal vertical section of my invention in an unfolded state taken in the line w, fr, Fig. 2. Fig. 2, an end view of t-he same. Fig. 3, a vertical central section of the same, in a folded state.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
The object of this invention is to obtain a bedstead which may, when not required for use, be folded up within a very small compass with the mattress upon it, the bedstead when folded also forming a box or receptacle for all necessary bed clothing.
The invention consists in having the bedstead formed of three parts connected to gether by joints or hinges and arranged in such a manner that one part may be folded with the mattress over the head-portion of the bedstead and another part folded underneath the head-portion, as hereinafter fully shown and described, whereby the desired end is obtained.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A represents a rectangular frame which forms the head-portion of the bedstead and is provided atone end with a head-board a.
B, C, represent two frames of rectangular form, which are of the same dimensions as the frame A, but are only one-half as deep or as thick as the frame A. The two frames B, C, are placed one over the other, the frame B, being connected by hinges or joints b, b, to the lower end and upper part of the frame A, and the frame C, connected to the lower end and under part of the frame A, by hinges or joints c.
The frame B, may be folded over on the top of the frame A, when required and a mattress D, is secured to the upper surfaces of the frames A, B. The mattress D, may be constructed in any of the ordinary modes but I prefer a wire spring mattress. The length of the two frames A, B, when opened 34,009, dated December 24, 1861.
should be about six feet, the width being about equal to an ordinary camp or portable cot.
The frame C, has a piece of canvas CZ, attached to its upper surface said canvas forming what may be termed a cover for the frame. To the under side of the frame A, there are attached four feet e, one at each angle or corner of the frame. These feet e, are attached to the frame by pivots f, so as to admit of the feet being folded inward within the frame when not required for use. This will be fully understood by referring to Fig. l. To the under side ofthe frame C, at its outer end there are attached in a similar manner two feet g, g.
The frame C, is allowed to fold underneath the frame A, and when in that position or thus folded a boX or receptacle is formed to receive the bed-clothes, see Fig. 3. When the frame B, is folded back over the frame A, and the frame C, folded back underneath the frame A, the device is rendered very compact. When unfolded for use the frame C, supports the frame B, as will be seen by referring to Fig. l. The frame C, therefore performs two functions, to wit, a support for the frame B, when the bedstead is unfolded for use, and a lid or bott-om for the frame A, so that the latter may form a box or receptacle for bed-cloth ing. The whole device may be constructed at a very moderate cost, so as to be within the reach of all classes of the community. It is admirably adapted for army or camp purposes as well as for ordinary household use.
I do not claim broadly a folding bedstead irrespective of the construction and arrangement herein shown and described, but
I do claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
A folding bedstead formed by the combination of the three frames A, B, C, with a mattress D, when arranged as herein shown and described, to admit of the frames and mattress being folded and at the same time form a box or receptacle for the bed-clothes as set forth.
F. C. PAYNE.
