END CURL HAIR ROLLER Filed Aug. 16, 1965 INVENTOR. WM/f V 560ff WAS 5 United States Patent 3,400,724 END CURL HAIR ROLLER Mamie V. Scott, 116 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, Md. 21502 Filed Aug. 16, 1965, Ser. No. 480,019 1 Claim. (Cl. 13239) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An end curl hair roller having -a hollow cylindrical metal hair roller with perforations throughout for drying hair roller thereon, a sector plate disposed within said hollow cylindrical roller also having perforations, a cutout portion for the cylindrical rollers surface, the cutout portion being disposed generally intermediate the ends of the hollow metal roller for receiving a smaller cylindrical hollow metal roller which engages the sector plate, and on which the end curls of hair are rolled for eliminating end curl flat portions thereon.
The present invention relates to a new and improved end curl hair roller, and more particularly relates to a roller which provides improved curl characteristics to the ends of a curl as well as providing a means for adapting the hair between the curl and the scalp to be quite straight. This is an improved effect that is not achieved in the use of the rollers of the prior art. It is also an advantage of the present invention to provide rollers for use in permanent waving of the hair.
Essentially, the present invention relates to providing a large roller for hair having a cut-out portion for receiving and accommodating a small roller to be fitted therein. Prior to inserting the small roller in the large roller, the ends of the hair are first wrapped around the small roller which is then slipped into the large roller by passing it through the means for accommodating the small roller, and then the balance of the hair that remains as desired, is wrapped around the large roller, and then the roller is secured in place. By means of the cross-sectional characteristics of the large roller, the small roller is maintained in place, and the orientation thereof with the surface level of the large roller is maintained. There is also provided within the large roller, as desired, a sector plate that is disposed off-center and it may be arcuate or generally planar in configuration.
An object, therefore, of the present invention is to provide a large hair roller having a cut-out portion intermediate the ends thereof, and within the cylindrical portion of the large roller a sector plate eccentrically disposed within the hollow cylinder, and providing a type of false bottom therein, the false bottom being provided in the outer roller in order to accommodate the inner roller, and the inner roller having hair wrapped therearound and disposed within the cut-out portion of the outer roller so that there are no flat portions or marks produced upon the end curls, as would ordinarily be produced in the prior art devices.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a series of numerous sized sets of large and small rollers, the large roller having a cut-out portion or section which is to receive a small roller having hair wrapped thereon, and the large roller having a sector plate or false bottom to provide for the small roller to rest thereon, and thereby provide curl to the ends of the hair as well as bulk and body to the section close to the head.
A further object of the present invention is to provide sets of rollers that are of various sizes for providing different formations and effects in curling the hair, and in which the rollers may be made of plastics, pressed cardboard or paper, or the like, light metal or other such materials.
3,400,724 Patented Sept. 10, 1968 Further, an object of the present invention is to provide rollers that are adapted to have a plurality of drying holes disposed throughout the large and small roller sets, and in which there is provided no flat portion of a curl which may be impressed as a mark on the curled hair by the small roller, since the present invention provides the small roller to be inserted in a cut-out section into a larger roller having a false bottom or sector plate therein, the sector plate being either slightly curved or substantially flat throughout. When the small roller is inserted in the larger roller, the top of the small roller is substantially fiat and generally tangential with the surface of the large roller, as will be described hereinbelow.
The above and other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a full consideration of the following detailed description and accompanying drawings in which:
FIGURE 1 shows an exploded view of a perspective arrangement in which a large roller having a cut-out portion receives a small roller, and in which the large roller is provided with a sector plate eccentrically mounted to provide thereby a false bottom;
FIGURE 2 is a cross-sectional view of the exploded arrangement of FIGURE 1 taken along a medial plane thereof; and
FIGURE 3 shows an arrangement in which the small roller is shown inserted within the large roller generally resting upon the false bottom, and in which the upper portion of the small roller is generally tangential or colinear with the engaging portion of the large roller.
Referring now to the drawings, there is shown a set of rollers 10 comprising a large roller 12 and a small roller 14, the rollers being made of plastics, pressed cardboard or paper or the like, light metals or other similar materials, and in which there is a plurality of drying holes or perforations 16, 16, 16 throughout.
The large roller 12 is disposed to have a false bottom or sector plate 20 eccentrically mounted, and in which the plate is disposed so that the small roller 14 is adapted to engage with the sector plate 20, and in which the opposite side of the small roller 14 is effectively or substantially tangential with the engaging side 22 of the large roller. The small roller 14 fits within a cut-out portion 26 of the large roller 12, the cut-out portion 26 being adapted to receive the small roller 14 there-within and maintain it within a secure plate particularly when the small roller has hair 30 disposed around it, as shown in FIGURE 3, and in which the large roller continues the curled hair rolled thereabout the small roller 14 and in which the hair is continuously rolled about the large roller 12, as shown by hair 32 in FIGURE 3.
The sector plate 20 is shown as a substantially flat portion engaged between inner sides of the roller 12. It is pointed out that it is within the purport of the invention to provide the setcor plate 20 with a small concave surface for receiving the convexity of the small roller 14 when inserted within the cut-out portion 26.
As is illustrated in FIGURE 3, the hair is rolled about the small roller 14 first so that all of the hair about the small roller is provided with a curl and since the small roller is engaged within the cut-out portion 26 and is secured against the sector plate 20 and the edges of the cut-out portion 26 in a tangential fashion, as described above, it is therefore observed that the small roller 14 and the large roller 12 provide and give curl to the ends of the hair as well as providing bulk and body to the hair close to the head.
Additional embodiments of the invention in this specification will occur to others and therefore it is intended that the scope of the invention be limited only by the appended claim and not by the embodiment described hereinabove. Accordingly, reference should be made to the following claim in determining the full scope of the invention.
What is claimed is:
1. An end curl hair roller comprising a hollow cylindrical hair metal roller having perforations throughout for drying the hair rolled thereon, a sector plate eccentrically disposed within said hollow cylindrical roller and also having perforations thereon, a cut-out portion on the cylindrical roller surface distal to the sector plate, said cutout portion being disposed generally intermediate the ends of the hollow hair roller and for receiving a smaller cylindrical hollow metal roller which engages the sector plate and having perforations throughout, and on which end curls of hair are rolled for eliminating end curl flat portions thereon.
