UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN F. BULLARD, OF SXVANTON, VERMONT.
RAILWAY-SWITCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 339,969, dated April 13, 1886.
Application filed January 30, 1886.
T 0 all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN F. BULLARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Swanton, in the county of Franklin and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-Switches; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a plan view of my improved railroad-switch. Fig. 2 is a view of the switch-stand. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the lock.
This invention has relation to railroadswitches; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A B and C D designate the stationary rails of the main track and side track.
E and F designate the connected switchrails, said switch-rails being connected, in the usual manner, by tie-bars T, having clamps U. The ordinary railroad-ties are employed in this construction, and the shifting mechanism is connected with the ties and rails in the manner hereinafter set forth.
The switch-rails E and F are connected by any suitable number of tierods T, to insure the proper shifting of the switch-rails when the shifting mechanism is operated for the purpose. The tie H nearest the tie H, upon which the swinging ends of the shifting-rails play, is provided with the hinged flanged look I. This flanged lock I comprises the base-plate I, which is let into the upper face of the tie H, so as to bring the upper faces of the tie H and the base plate I in the same horizontal plane, in order to permit the shifting rails to be properly operated. The hinged lock I is provided wit-h vertical side flanges, 1 near its wider end, and its arm J is journaled between the lugs K K, rising from the base-plate 1, near its outer end. \Vhen the lock I is closed, the flanges 1 close down upon and embrace the base-plate I, and the end 1 of the lock I abuts against the outer edge Serial No. 190,313. (No model.)
of the base flange of the switch-rail F. The hinged flanged lock I is provided with a short rib, M, on its back face, and this rib M is provided with a longitudinally-disposed guard or slot, N, into which a laterally-extending arm or rod, N, connected to the upper end of a short lever, 0, projects. This lever O is fulcrumed to one edge of the tie or to the baseplate of the lock, and is connected at its lower end by a short bar or arm, P, with one end of the shifting or operating rod P. The other end of the operating-rod P is connected with one end of a horizontal lever, Q, which is fulcrumed on a bearing, Q, at one side of the track and between the track and switchstand Q". Near its other end the lever Q is connected, by a pivoted arm, R, to the doublecrank rod S, which latter is disposed vertically in bearings S S secured to the switch -stand- Q The crank -rod S is connected by a horizontal rod, T, to the switchrail E by a clamp, U, said rod 'I being pivoted to said clamp or chair U, so that the ends of the switch-rails may describe the necessary are while being shifted. By using this coir strnction I can unlock and shift the switchrails without having to cross the track, by simply operating the crank-rod S.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 4
1. The combination, with the main and side tracks and the switch-rails connected by the tie-rod, and the hinged flanged lock with back rib and guard thereon, of the lever 0, bar P, connected thereto and to the shifting-rod P, the lever Q, the crank-rod, and the arms connecting the switch-rails to the lever Q, and the crank-rod, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the base-plate I, having lugs K K, of the hinged flanged lock I, provided with the slot N, the lever O, with arm N, the bar P, operating-rod P, the lever Q, and rods connecting the lock I with the lever of the switch stand, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN F. BULLARD.
