(CI. 63-15) This invention relates to a ring having a replaceable setting and more particularly to a novel arrangement of parts in a ring, whereby diiferent settings can be fastened to a casting so as to permit the wearer to vary the ornamental appearance of the ring in accordance with the wearers costume, the time of day, and the activities in which the wearer is engaged, as well as for such other reason as may be desired.

Various types of rings, especially cocktail rings and other ornamental rings, employ a casting of precious metal, such as gold or platinum, which is generally of considerable size so as to be highly styled by its shape, design, and ornamentation, such as gems, and because of the amount of precious metal utilized, can be quite costly. A suitable setting is generally mounted on the casting and may consist of one or more jewels or gems such as diamonds, emeralds, sapphires, pearls, and any of the myriad precious or semi-precious jewels. The setting itself need not require a sizeable amount of precious metal, and accordingly it is the object of the present invention to provide an arrangement whereby one casting can be utilized with a number of different interchangeable and removable settings. Some of these interchangeable settings may utilize relatively inexpensive ornamentation, gems and designs so as to be of a desired appearance and utility during working hours, periods of domestic work of a housewife, and on generally normal occasions, while relatively expensive settings employing rarer or larger and more costly gems, ornamentation and the like may be utilized on special occasions and to complement the dress of the wearer.

It is a further object of the present invention to provide a ring having an interchangeable and replaceable setting together with means for effecting a simple engagement of the setting with the casting.

An additional object of the present invention resides in the provision of suitable means for insuring against accidental disengagement of the setting with respect to the casting by the utilization of a novel curved latch member in connection with an enlarged headed detent with the latch member having a portion extending closely adjacent to the finger-receiving hole in the shank of the casting yet lying flush and tangent to the crown of the casting.

The construction of this invention features a ring including a casting and a removable and interchangeable setting. Utilized in conjunction with the invention is a catch depending from the mounting and adapted to be disposed in a notch in the casting which also has a detent integral therewith. Hingedly secured by means of a pintle to the casting is an arcuate latch so that the latch is movable from a disengaged position to an engaged and locked position with respect to the detent and so that a portion thereof remote from the pintle lies tangent to the crown yet extends to a position immediately adjacent the finger-receiving hole so that a wearers finger inserted therein will retain the latch on the detent and the mounting of the casting.

Still further objects and features of this invention reside in the provision of a ring with an interchangeable setting that is simple in construction, durable, capable of being manufactured in various shapes and sizes to conform to the styles and tastes of the wearer, and which will reduce the effective cost of a number of ornamental rings of the ring wearer so as to be readily attractive to a prospective purchaser.

These, together with the various ancillary objects and features of the present invention, which will become apparent as the following description proceeds, are attained by this ring, a preferred embodiment of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, by way of example only, wherein:

FIG. 1 is an exploded elevational view of the ring showing the interchangeable setting in a position removed from the casting with portions being shown in section to show the construction in detail;

FIG. 2 is a top plan view of the casting looking along the plane of line 22 in FIG. 1, with parts being broken away to show other parts in detail;

FIG. 3 is an end elevational view of the casting looking in the direction of line 33 in FIG. 1;

FIG. 4 is an enlarged vertical sectional view showing a portion of the ring with the setting installed; and,

FIG. 5 is an enlarged sectional detail view taken along the plane of line 5-5 in FIG. 4.

With continuing reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein like reference numerals designate similar parts throughout the various views, reference numeral is used to generally designate the ring constructed in accordance with the concepts of the present invention. The ring 10 includes two main parts, a casting 12 and a setting 14. The casting 12 includes a shank 16 having a fingerreceiving hole 18 therethrough and a crown 20. The crown may be of any suitable design or configuration and may be of any suitable size. Preferably the entire casting is formed of a precious metal, such as gold or platinum, and itself is of a highly ornamental appearance.

The crown 20 is hollow and includes upwardly extending walls 24 having inetgrally cast therewith a detent 26 provided with an enlarged head 28 preferably spherical in shape. The crown further includes a peripheral flange 30 which may be circular in shape .or such other shape as may be desired having a central opening 32 therein. The peripheral flange is provided with a notch 34. The notch is oppositely disposed with respect to the detent 26, and the detent 26 extends toward the finger-receiving opening 18 and in the direction of the notch 34.

The setting 14 includes a mounting plate or rim 38 on which suitable jewels and ornamentation, indicated at 40, are disposed in accordance with the jewelry art. Depending from the mounting plate 38 and extending downwardly and inwardly are a pair of eyes 42. A latch 44 is pivoted to the eyes 42 by means of a pintle 46, which extends through the latch and through the eyes 42. The latch has a tapered opening 48 therein and is arcuate in shape. Depending from the plate 38 is a catch 50 which, as can be best seen in FIG. 4, is adapted to extend into the notch 34 and beneath the flange 30 so as to engage the flange 30 in a hook-like manner.

It is the concept of the present invention to provide several different settings 14 from which the wearer may select to utilize with the casting 12. Thus, the wearer may individually purchase or obtain numerous settings whenever the wearer pleases, whereby the wearer may utilize the setting best suited to the time and occasion. Thus, in order to have different appearing rings, the cost of the casting is eliminated for each setting other than the initial casting. The setting is positioned in place by insertion of the setting in a manner so that the catch 50 enters into the notch and engages the flange 30. Then, because the eyes 42 extend downwardly and inwardly, sulficient room is left for manipulation of the lever 44 in a convenient manner so that the lever may be moved down from a raised position whereby the lever will engage over the enlarged head of the detent 26 and snap into position due to the location of the tapered opening 48. The lever 44 is curved so that the end thereof extends downwardly adjacent the finger-receiving hole 18 and into position lying tangent to the inner surface of the crown 20 so that the slightly puffed flesh of the wearers finger inserted in the finger hole Will prevent any disengagement of the lever 44 from the detent 28 and thus lockingly hold the lever 44 on the detent 26 and the setting 14 on the casting 12. Simple manipulation will permit the removal and replacement of the setting after the ring is taken from the finger of the wearer.

A latitude of modification, substitution and changeis intended in the foregoing disclosure, and in some instances, some features of the invention Will be utilized without a corresponding use of other features. Accordingly, it is appropriate that the appended claims be construed broadly and in a manner consistent with the spirit and-scope of the invention herein.

We claim:

1. A ring comprising a casting including a shank having a finger-receiving hole therein and a crown integral with said shank and including a central opening therein defined by a peripheral support flange, a mounting disposed on said flange, said flange having a notch therein, a catch member depending from said mounting and being disposed in said notch and engaging the underside of said flange, a detent integral with said crown and extending from the inner surface thereof toward said fingerreceiving hole, eye means integral with said mounting and depending downwardly therefrom toward said fingerreceiving hole, a latch having an aperture therethrough for lockingly receiving said detent, and pintle means hingedly securing said latch to said eye means so that said latch is selectively disengageable from said detent to permit removal and replacement of said mounting.

2. A ring according to claim 1, wherein said latch is arcuate in shape.

3. A ring according to claim 2, wherein said latch includes a portion extending to a position immediately adjacent said finger-receiving hole so that a wearers finger inserted in said finger-receiving hole will retain said latch on said detent and said mounting on said crown.

4. A ring according to claim 3, wherein said detent has an enlarged head.

5. A ring according to claim 4, wherein said aperture in said latch is tapered for receiving said enlarged head.

6. A ring according to claim 5, wherein said portion includes the end of said latch remote from said eye means, said end lying tangent to said crown.

Claims

1. A RING COMPRISNG A CASTING INCLUDING A SHANK HAVING A FINGER-RECEIVING HOLE THEREIN AND A CROWN INTEGRAL WITH SAID SHANK AND INCLUDING A CENTRAL OPENING THEREIN DEFINED BY A PERIPHERAL SUPPORT FLANGE, A MOUNTING DISPOSED ON SAID FLANGE, SAID FLANGE HAVING A NOTCH THEREIN, A CATCH MEMBER DEPENDING FROM SAID MOUNTING AND BEING DISPOSED IN SAID NOTCH AND ENGAGING THE UNDERSIDE OF SAID FLANGE, A DETENT INTEGRAL WITH SAID CROWN AND EXTENDING FROM THE INNER SURFACE THEREOF TOWARD SAID FINGERRECEIVING HOLE, EYE MEANS INTEGRAL WITH SAID MOUNTING AND DEPENDING DOWNWARDLY THEREFROM TOWARD SAID FINGERRECEIVING HOLE, A LATCH HAVING AN APERTURE THERETHROUGH FOR LOCKINGLY RECEIVING SAID DETENT, AND PINTLE MEANS HINGEDLY SECURING SAID LATCH TO SAID EYE MEANS SO THAT SAID LATCH IS SELECTIVELY DISENGAGEABLE FROM SAID DETENT TO PERMIT REMOVAL AND REPLACEMENT OF SAID MOUNTING.
