UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
vWILLIAM J. BAYRER, OF SOUTHINGTON, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE PECK, STOV 8U VILCOX COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
MACHINE FOR BENDING SHEET METAL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 339,729. dated April 13,1886.
Application tiled February 15, 1886. Serial No. 191,927.
To all whom, t may concern.:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. BAYRER,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Southington, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Bending Sheet Metal, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to improvements in 1o machines for bending sheet metal, of the class represented in my Patent No. 314,311, dated March 24,1885; and one object of my improvement is to locate the handle of the gage-operating mechanism in a more convenient position-viz., at the front of the machine, instead of at one end.
In thc accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my machine, with a part at the middle broken away, so as to show a 2o small portion in vertical section on a plane immediately in front of the pinion shown in Fig. 2, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, with parts broken away and a portion of the uframe cut out on the line x x of Fig. 1.
The main portion of the machine is like that which has been manufactured and sold as the Stow Folder, and need not be specifically described.
A is the folding-bar; B, the plate, and C the gage underneath the plate. In Fig. 2 the middle portion of this gage is represented as broken out, in order to better show the other part-s, while that portion of it which is covered by the plate B is illustrated in broken lines. This gage is provided with two oblique slots, a c. The gage-bar D is fitted to slide longitudinally within a groove in the frame and underneath the gage. vIt is provided with two inclined studs, b, which extend upward into the slots aa of the gage. The middle portion of this gage-bar is represented as broken away in Fig. 2. Moving the gage-bar to the right or left will, by engagement of the studs b and walls of the slots a, move the gage C forward or backward, the same as in my aforesaid prior patent.
Instead of moving the gage-bar by means of a screw and nut at one end of the machine, I form teeth in the under side of the gage-bar D at its middle portion, thereby forming a rack, c, at said point. Underneath this rack I journal the pinion f, which meshes into the teeth of the rack c.
(No model.)
At the front end of the shaft d is the operating-handle g. By turning this handle, shaft, 5 5 and pinion to move the gage-bar D, the gage C is moved out or in, as may be desired.
When a large amount of the same kind of work is to be done, and it is desired to set the gage for the entire job, it is important that 6o the gage shall be so rmly held in place as to prevent accidental displacement. To this end I thread the outer end of the shaft d at a point forward of the handle g, and on said threaded portion I place the nut h. This nut is turned back toward the handle when the gage is to be moved, and is left in that position until it is desired to lock or fasten the gage for a time. In such case the nut is screwed forward against the front of the frame of the machine, so as to bind the shaft d against rotation in either direction, and thereby lock the gage-bar and gage against accidental displacement. By my improvement the gage is readily and quickly operated, while the rotatory handle for operating said gage is located. at the middle of the front of the machine in a very convenient p0- sition.
The operating-handle g and nut or locking mechanism h are both on the same shaft near each other in a very convenient position for operation.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a machine for bending sheet metal, the combination of the gage C, having inclined slots c a, the gage-bar D, having inclined studs Z1 b, and the rack c, the shaft d, the handle g, and the pinion f, .mounted on said shaft and engaging the rack of the gagebar, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
2. In a machine for bending sheet metal, the combination of the gage C, gagebar D, for moving said gage, having the rack c, the handle g, shaft d, having the threaded portion in front of said handle, the pinionf, engaging the rack of the gage-bar, and the nut h on the threaded portion of said shaft, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
VILLIAM J. BAYRER.
