SYLVESTER \V. SHELDON, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
HOLDER FOR PAPER BAGS.
SJFECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 339,487, dated April 6, 1886.
Application filed May 23, 1885. Serial No. 166,506. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LSYLVEsTER W. SHELDON, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Holders for Paper Bags, Toilet- Papers, and other Articles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a side elevation of one of my improved holders, shown closed. Fig. 2 is asectional end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same, shown open and partly in section. Fig. iis aplan view of the same, partly in section, through the line a: m, Fig. l.
The object of this invention is to provide holders for paper bags, toilet-paper,and other articles, constructed in such manner that they can be readily applied to the articles to be held, and will hold them securely, and which shall be simple in construction, and inexpensive in manufacture.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of the various parts of the holder, as will be hereinafter fully described, and then claimed.
The holder is formed of four pieces, A B O D.
The piece A is made in U shape with along slightly-curved middle part having straight and parallel short arms upon its ends. The curved middle part of the piece A is slotted longitudinally, and its arms are grooved upon the inner sides of their upper parts, and slotted at d in their lower parts, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1 and shown in full lines in the lcft hand part of Fig. 3.
The piece B is made in U shapc, and of such a length and thickness as to fit into the outer piece, A. The outer sides of the arms of the inner piece, B, have flanges a formed upon them, to fit into the slots in the arms of the outer piece, A,and engage with the said outer piece at the ends of the slots in its arms, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
The middle part of the inner piece, B, is
widened, and has a perforation, 12, formed in it in such a position as to be above the middle part of the piece A when the upper ends of the flanges a are in contact with the said piece A at the inner ends of the slots in its arms,so that a hook, O, a nail, a screw, or other support, can be passed through the said perforation to suspend the holder, and at the same time lock the pieces A B together.
The hook G can be formed with an eye in its shank to receive a hook, nail, or screw to suspend the holder; or it can have a screwthread out upon the said shank to screw into a support; or the hook C can be replaced by a screw or nail to be screwed or driven into a support.
In the inner sides of the ends of the arms,
of the inner piece, B,are formed recesses c, to receive the ends of the pin D, the said recesses being made of such a depth that the ends of the said pin D will be within the arms of the outer piece, A, when the inner piece, B, is drawn into the said outer piece,A. The pin D is made with a head upon one end,and is tapered to a point at the other end, so that it can be readily driven through the corner of a package of paper bags or of toilet-paper, or through any other article to be held.
In using the holder the supporter O is removed from the perforation b, the piece B is withdrawn from the piece A, and the pin D removed and driven through the corner of the package of paper bags, toilet paper, or other article to be suspended. The ends of the pin D are then placed in the recesses c, the piece B is pressed up into the piece A,and the supporter O is inserted in the perforation b when the holder is ready to be suspended in the place where the paper bags, the toilet-paper, or other article is to be used.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
I 1. In a holder for paper bags, toilet-paper, and other articles, the combination, with the slotted and grooved U-shaped outer piece, A, of the U shaped inner piece, B, having flanges a on the outer sides of its ends, the perforation b in its middle part, and recesses c in the inner sides of its ends, the headed and pointed pin D, placed in the recesses c, and a supporter, ing flanges a, recesses c, and perforation b,and
O, placed in the perforation b, substantially as the pin D, combined for operation substan- 1o herein shown and described, whereby the said tially as shown and described.
holder can be readily applied to the article to 5 be h 61 d as Set forth. SYLVEDTER W. SHELDON.
2. In a holder for paper bags and other ar- Vitnesses: ticles, the slotted and grooved U-shaped outer JAMES T. GRAHAM,
piece, A, the U-shaped inner piece, B, hav- 0. SEDGWIOK.
