United States Patent 3,394,408 PAIR OF GOLF GLOVES Randolph E. Bush, 21700 River Oaks Drive,

Apt. 204-13, Rocky River, Ohio 44116 Filed July 27, 1967, Ser. No. 656,540 6 Claims. (Cl. 2159) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to a pair of golf gloves, and more particularly, a pair of golf gloves designed to constitute a reminder to the golfer of the correct grip to be employed, while permitting the feel of the golf club with certain of the fingers to thus insure a proper sensitivity or touch.

Briefly summary of the invention Briefly, this invention relates to a pair of golf gloves to be worn by the player, which gloves remind the player of the proper fingers which are to be employed to grip the club. The remaining fingers are uncovered so that these fingers may directly contact the shaft to provide a better feel of the shaft. It has been established by a large number of leading professionals in the sport of golf that the hand which leads the down-swing should have three fingers in snug gripping relationship with the club shaft and the other hand should have the two middle fingers in snug fitting relationship with the club shaft. The leading hand for a right-handed golfer is the left hand because the left hand leads the pair of hands through the forward or downward golf stroke. For the left-handed golfer, the right hand is considered to be the leading hand. Thus in the instance of a right-handed golfer, the little, ring and middle fingers of the left hand are covered by the golf glove, and the middle two fingers of the right hand are covered by the right hand golf glove. With respect to the left hand, the thumb and index fingers are uncovered so that they may directly contact the shaft and rest lightly on the shaft to enhance the sense of touch. Similarly, the thumb, index and smallest finger of the right hand of the right-handed golfer are uncovered to remind the golfer that only the middle two fingers grip the club and to permit the remaining fingers to lightly engage the shaft to enhance the sense of touch.

Brief description of the drawing FIGURES 1 and 2 are perspective views showing a golf shaft being gripped by a right and a left handed golfer, respectively, each employing a pair of golf gloves according to this invention;

FIGURES 3 and 4 are plan views showing the palms of the pair of gloves employed in FIGURE 2;

FIGURE 5 is a view, to an enlarged scale, showing the fastener on the rear side of each of the gloves;

FIGURES 6 and 7 are plan views of the back of the gloves of FIGURES 8 and 9, respectively; and

FIGURES 8 and 9 are plan views of the palms of a pair of gloves according to this invention for a right handed golfer.

Detailed description of the invention One pair of gloves according to this invention comprises a left-hand glove 11 and a right-hand glove for a right-handed golfer, as shown in perspective in FIG- URE 1 and in which the palm side of the gloves are shown in FIGURES 8 and 9 respectively. In FIGURE 2, a left-handed golfers pair of gloves is shown as the right-hand glove 14 and the left-hand glove 15. With respect to a left-handed golfer, the right 3,394,408 Patented July 30, 1968 hand 16 is considered the leading hand and the left hand 17 is considered the following or trailing hand, both with respect to the normal swing of the left-handed golfer. The palm side of the right-handed golfers gloves 11 and 10 is shown in FIGURES 8 and 9, respectively, while the back side of the right-handed golfers gloves is shown in FIGURES 6 and 7. It is understood, of course, that the left-handed golfers gloves 14 and 15 FIGURES 4 and 3 respectively may employ similar structure, on the back side, as that shown with respect to the right handed golfers gloves 10, 11, FIGURES 7 and 6 respectively.

Preferably, the gloves of each of these embodiments is formed of suitable soft leather, such as cabretta leather, and may be provided with suitable ornamentation such as that known as pigtex in which small holes are provided so that the leather resembles pigskin. If leather is employed, then the backs of the gloves may be provided with underlying elastic material, such as the elastic sections 35, 36, which are stressed and stitched to the glove so that when the elastic contracts, it produces a gathered effect on the back of the gloves as best seen in FIGURES 6 and 7. This gathering serves to pre vent wrinkling of the glove where the palm engages the club shaft. The cuff of the glove, such as the cuff 40 on the glove 11, is provided with suitable elastic material 43 which is preferably stretched and sewed to the cuff to retain the cuff of the glove in snug engagement with the golfers wrist when the snap portions 45, 46 on the opposite sides of a V-cut notch 48 and located at the cuff 40 are engaged in a conventional manner. The details of these snaps are shown in a fragmentary view, to an enlarged scale, in FIGURE 5. The gloves are also provided with suitable vent holes 50, spaced throughout the fingers and the backs of the gloves to reduce perspiration. It is, of course, understood that porous material, such as fabric, may be employed on the backs of the gloves.

The left-hand glove 11 for the right-handed golfer is shown with its palm 60 upwardly in FIGURE 8 and includes coverings 62, 63 and 64 for the little finger, ring finger and middle finger, respectively, of the left hand. A hole 67 is provided for the thumb and a slight projection 68 extends over a portion of the index finger with the major portion of the index finger uncovered. The right-hand glove for the right-handed golfer 10 is shown in FIGURE 9 with its palm 70 upwardly and including a covering 72 for the ring finger and a covering 73 for the middle finger. The little finger is provided with a relatively short extension 74 so that the major portion of the little finger is uncovered as is the situation with respect to the index finger and the relatively short projection 75. Hole 78 is provided for the golfers thumb. Again, these gloves are provided with cuffs 80, 82 in which elastic material is inserted, stretched and sewn as indicated at 84, 85.

The palm side of the left-handed golfers gloves 14 and 15 is shown in FIGURES 4 and 3, respectively, while the back side of the right-handed golfers gloves is shown in FIGURES 6 and 7. It is understood, of course, that the left-handed golfers gloves 14 and 15 may employ similar structure on the back side as that ilgolllllll with respect to the right-handed golfers gloves The left-hand glove 15 for the left-handed golfer is shown as having a palm 1-8, a thumb hole 19, a ring finger 20 and a middle finger 21. Short, stubby extensions 23 and 24 exist where the little finger and index finger, respectively, have been removed, i.e. uncovered. With respect to the right-hand glove 14, shown in FIGURE 4, the glove includes a palm 26, and coverings for the little D finger 27, the ring finger 28 and the middle finger 29. An abbreviated extension 30 is provided for the index finger. However, the major portion of the index finger of the right hand remains uncovered and a thumb-hole 31 is provided.

An important feature of this invention is that each embodiment reminds the respectve golfer of the fingers which are to snugly grip the club shafts 12, 13, while permitting intimate contact between the thumb and index fingers of each hand as well as the little finger of the trailing hand to thus permit a good touch. One of the advantages of this touch or feel of the club shaft is that it permits the golfer to putt without removing the gloves. It is well known that the major portion of wear of a golf glove is the result of inserting the hand in the glove and removing the glove from the hand as is presently the common practice each time the golfer reaches the green. Thus, a major source of wear of the golf gloves is eliminated without the loss of the sensitive touch incident to direct contact with the club shaft between the thumb and index fingers, which fingers are primarily responsible for the sense of touch in gauging distancs.

Another feature of this invention is that by providing coverings for the ring finger, middle finger and palm of the trailing hand, protection is provided against callouses and blisters for these areas of the trailing hand.

In accordance with the patent statutes, the principles of the present invention may be utilized in various ways, numerous modifications and alterations being contemplated, substitution of parts and changes in construction being resorted to as desired, it being understood that the embodiment shown in the drawing is given merely for purposes of explanation and illustration without intending to limit the scope of the claims to the specific details disclosed.
