Serial Nen 189.258. (No model.)
part of the bracket E is removable from the krear part or the arm of the bracket, being ab.
lacllell thereto and supported thereon by a rlovetail joint, I, converging upwardly, ai. rfliieli point 'rbc two paris may be separated by merely lifting the circular part from the arm.. rlhev circular part of the bracket is proririefl with a rear and two side lugs, J J J,
projecting np Wardly i nwardly from the bracket ami rigid thereto, and also with a movable lug or clutch, E, at its front side, aiixed to arod, L, iieting and movable laterally in an aperture provided therefor in the bracket, which rod is alec Ieccovidecl with a spiral spring, M, around it, bearing at `its in ner end aga-instashoulder ch the roel and at its outer end against the rim the bracket, whereby the lug K is held up to ite Work againet the periphery of the bracke and. to the bottoni of the lantern. The circular part oi" the bracket E is adapted to receive thereon and support the lantern N, as shown in i and 2, and the lugs Jand K receive within them and clutch and hold the bottom of the lantern firmly in place. The clutch K, when drawn back to allow the bottom of the lantern to passim under the lugs J J, is turned eilewlse, as shown in Fie. 4, to allow the bottoni of the lantern to pass over it, and when turned up vertically and drawn in againstthe rim or the bracket it passes in. between two jaws, O U, rigid to the bracket, which jaws() O steady the clutch K and help to hold ituprigbtin position. 4
Projecting upwardly from the arm of the bracket E is a small post, P, having a tenori and shoulder at its, top adapted to receive the eye of a ring affixed to the reector Q, which reflector the post P isintended and adapted to support in the rear of the lantern when an rdinary lantern is used having a wholly transparent chimney, as shown in Fig.2. A small eetecrew, R, turning into the top of the post i? against the eye of the reilector, will retain the reflector irmly in position When traveling over roads on which the Wagon jolts consider= ably. The arm S is provided at one end with an aperture, through which the standard B liasses, and on vwhich the arm is supported at IOC right angles thereto and moves freely up and Afixed to the free outer end of the arm .S is
n a spring-hook, U, adapted to receive the bail of a lantern, whereby. when the' arm S is adjusted at the proper distance from the bracket E, the lantern Standing therein -is held more rmlyin place.
The standard may be of any desired height, so that the device will be adapted to Vbe use d with either a low or high load, as occasion requires. l
It will be seen that my device is especially adapted for use with ordinary farm-wagons; but it can be used with any kind of avehicle, such change only being madein the meansand way of attaching it to the vehicle as would readily occur to any mechanic.
The method of using my device will he fullyl understood/from the' foregoing description with a reference tothe drawings.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, s l
1. The'adjnstable .device for supporting a vlantern on'avehiele', consisting of a standard, B, .having means vto aix it to a vehicle, a bracket adjustable up or down onthe standard B, the bracket being provided with lugs J Jh and clutch K,and the arm S,adj ustable up and down on the standard B, the arm beingpro vided with the spring-hook U, substantially as described.y
2. The combination, with the end-board of a Wagon, of a standard, B, all'xed removably to the end-'board by a set-screw, D, a bracket, E,"
combination with the bracket E,'said bracket l being adjustable up and down on standard B.
and made fast thereto by a'setscrew, G, and
having the lugs J J, spring-clutch K, post P,
and reflector Q, substantiallyas described.
'4. The-standard B, removably attached to a vehicle, in combination with a bracket,'E,
provided with ,lugs J J, spring-clutch K, post y P, Yreflector Q, and .the arm S,provided with spring-hook U, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof l afxmy signature in presence of two witnesses.
