TRAVELER-CLEANER FOR RING-SPINNING FRAMES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 338,831, dated March 30.1886.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES C. DIMAN, of Fall River, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Traveler- Cleaners for Ring- Spinning Frames, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to the device commonly known as a cleaner, used to strip the waste from the ring-traveler in spinningframes.

Anumber of forms of such cleaners have heretofore been suggested, and some of them have been extensively used. The oldest form is an upright pin or standard inserted in the ring-rail. In alater form the cleaner pin or post was secured in place by attaching it directly to the ring. Another way which has been suggested of making the cleaner is to form it in one piece with a sheet-metal ringholder; and in the latest form of cleaner of which I have knowledge the cleaner post or pin is provided at the bottom with a fiat laterally-projecting notched ar1n,which is clamped between the ring'holder and the head of one of the confining-screws, which screw thus serves to fasten both the holder to the rail and the cleaner to the holder.

The feature that distinguishes my improve ment from any of the foregoing types is that the traveler-cleaner constitutes at the same time one of the confining-screws which bind the ring-holder to the rail. In other words, the confining-screw and the traveler-cleaner are made in one, the screw being formed above its retaining-head with a prolongation that constitutes the stem or post of the cleaner.

The nature of my invention and the manner in which it is or may be carried into effect will be readily understood by reference to the drawings accompanying this specification, in which Figure l is a perspective view of the combined traveler-cleaner and holder-retaining screw. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of part of a ring-rail, together with ring, ring-holder,

and combined retaining-screw and traveler,-

cleaner in place thereon.

The device shown in Fig. 1 consists of a screw-threaded shank, a, and a head, 1), these parts constituting the confining-screw, and an upright stem or post, 0, extending from the head on the prolongation of screw-shank a, which constitutes the traveler cleaner. The stem or post is polygonal in cross-section, so that when in place on the ring-rail it can without difficulty be brought to a position in which it will present one of its longitudinal edges or corners to the traveler, the distance between the acting edge of the post and the traveler on the ring being adjustable or variable within needed limits by turning the post so as to bring that edge nearer to or farther from the ring, as desired, and it preferably tapers a little from base to point.

An incidental advantage of giving the stem a polygonal cross-section is that it can be readily taken hold of by akey or other instrument for the purpose of either setting down or removing the screw.

1n Fig. 2, A is the ring-rail, B the ringholder, C the traveler-ring, and 00 the traveler, all of the usual construction. The holder is provided in its periphery with the customary notches, in which enter the confining-screws, whose heads overlap the holder, and thus retain it in place. One of these screws ql is of the ordinary kind. The other, as shown, is my improved device. The shank a is screwed into the ringrail and enters the notch in the periphery of the holder, while its head I) overlaps and presses down upon the face of the holder, and from the top of the head 1) projects the cleaner stem or post a, which stands in the required position with respect to the ring C to cause it to act to clean the traveler of the lint and waste that gather upon it during the operation of the machine.

Having described my improvement, what I claim as new and of my invention is- 1. The combined confining-screw and traveler-cleaner consisting of a screw formed beyond its retaining-head with a prolongation,

which constitutes at once a cleaner-post anda stantially as and for the purposes hereinbefore stem by which the screw canbe set in place or removed, in combination with the ring-rail,

ring-holder, and traveler-ring, substantially 5 as hereinbefore set forth.v
