Definitions

  • This invention relates to packaging and is more particularly concerned with improvements in a container which has a body of tubular shape with the top and bottom of non-uniform configuration and which is adapted for packaging of products of various kinds.
  • Another object of the invention is to provide a one piece, generally rectangular blank of paperboard or similar sheet material for fabricating a container of the type which is characterized by upstanding side wall forming panels integrally connected at their bottom edges to a bottom wall panel along straight, parallel hinge lines, the blank being cut and scored on lines which are spaced on opposite sides of the transverse center line of the blank, so as to divide the blank into a central bottom wall forming section and two side wall forming sections, the side wall forming sections extending from parallel, hinge forming score lines which define two opposite sides of a bottom wall forming panel, the central section being cut along the sides of the blank and scored so as to divide from the bottom wall panel, which has its perimeter defined by straight score lines, glue flaps for connecting the bottom wall panel to bottom marginal portions of the side wall panels between the hinge forming score lines when the container is set up, and score lines in the side wall forming panels which extend transversely of the blank and in outwardly bowed relation in the direction of the ends of the blank, which are adjacent the hinge lines connecting the central and

  • the adhesive may be a heat activatable type which is intially applied and dried on the blank.
  • the blank 11 is formed or folded to bring the two side wall panels 13 and 13 into upright position relative to the bottom panel 12 with the adhesive coated margins of the panel 13' overlying the margins of the panel 113 after which the seals are set by pressure.
  • the glue tabs 28, 28' and 29, 29' are preferably folded inside the side wall panels 13 and 13. However, they may be folded outside the same, if desired.

  • the top of the container 60 may be closed by a metal end member 80 having a center opening 81 with a friction cap 82, the member 80 having its peripheral edges crimp sealed to the top edges of the paperboard body of the container as shown in FIGURE 9.
  • This form of container body may be produced from lighter gauge paperboard than similar paperboard containers having straight side walls without a decrease in the resistance to crushing under vertical load.
  • the shape at the top of the side wall may be modified so as to make it, for example, in the form of an ellipse, with slight modification of the score lines and the use of a properly shaped mandrel in setting up the container.

  • a container comprising a side wall formed of a pair of generally rectangular panels, the ends of which are overlapped and secured so as to form a tubular body which has a cross section at the top end with a perimeter defined at least in part by outwardly curved lines and a cross section at the bottom with a perimeter defined by a series of connected straight lines, a bottom wall having oppositely disposed edge portions integrally connected on parallel straight hinge lines to bottom edge portions of the side wall panels, said bottom wall having other edge portions connected by glue flaps to bottom edge portions of the side wall panels, said glue flaps hinging on straight lines which lie between corresponding ends of the straight hinge lines connecting said bot-tom wall to the side wall panels, said side wall panels having score lines which extend in upwardly bowed relation relative to the hinged connection thereof to the bottom wall and define at least in part the upper edges of side wall portions which are in fiat planes, which extend a relatively small distance immediately above said hinged connections and which merge at their upper edges into outwardly curved portions of said side wall.

  • a blank of foldable sheet material which is generally rectangular and which is cut and scored f r fabricating a tubular container having an integral bottom wall, said blank being divided by longitudinally spaced, transverse lines into a central section and two end sections, said end section-s being adapted to be connected so as to form the side wall of the container, when set up, said central section being cut away on opposite sides of the blank so as to provide a center bottom wall forming panel defined by hinge forming central portions of said transverse dividing lines and bottom edge forming portions extending along straight lines and connecting corresponding ends of said hinge forming portions, and bottom edge connecting flaps formed in the blank areas on opposite sides of said bottom wall forming panel, which flaps are separated from said bottom wall forming panel by straight hinge lines coinciding with edge portions of the bottom wall forming panel, which straight hinge lines extend between the ends of the hinge 'forrning central porti ns of said transverse dividing lines, and said end sections each having a score line adjacent the transverse dividing line which is bowed in the direction of the
