INVENTOR BY Mu/WW ATTORNEYS I WITNESSES ,%f%/%W 2% jecting part a fork,H,projects toward the front UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CALVIN KEELER, OF HOBART, NEW YORK.
cAR oouPLme.
SPECIFICATION fozming part of Letters Patent No. 337,958, dated Marzh 16, 1886 Application filed August 27, 1885.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CALVIN KEELER, of Hobart, in the county of Delaware and State New York, have invented a new and improved Car-Coupling, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention consists in the combination, with a draw-head, of a lever pivoted on the same and provided on its swinging end with a fork for holding the pin, and a cam-lever pivoted on the forked lever and serving to adjust the link.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part ofthisspeciflcation,in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of a draw-head provided with my improved coupling device, the link being held coupled; Fig. 2, a similar View, the pin being raised ready for coupling. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the draw-head, parts being broken out. Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional View of the draw-head on the line :10 m, Fig. 1.
The draw-head A is provided at its front end with a longitudinallyslottcd cross-piece, B, having an upwardly-projeeting lug, I, on its top, from which lug a flange, 0, having an aperture, D, projects to the rear. A longitudinal slot, E, is formed on the top of the draw-head, and in the inner end of said slot the pinholding lever F is pivoted, which has an upwardly-projecting part, G, on its swinging end, and at the top of the upwardly-proand has the inner edges of the prongs beveled. The lever F has a downwardly-projecting rounded edge, J, at its front. A lever,K,is pivoted in arecess in the side of the lever F,which lever K has its lower edge rounded to act as a cam. The draw-head A has a raised part, L, around the bottom pin aperture. The
Serial No. 175,463. (No model.)
draw-head also has a shoulder or offset, M, in the back of the lug I.
N is the link and O the coupling-pin.
The operation is as follows: \Vhen the pin 0 is raised, its upper end swings backward, and its lower end rests against the shoulder M,and is held between the fork H of the lever F, which lever is lowered. The entering link N strikes the cam-edge or rounded edge J of the lever F and swings the free end of saidlever upward, whereby the fork H is also swung upward, and, releasing its hold on the pin 0, permits the same to drop and pass through the link, the flange or top piece of the pin resting on the flange C.
To raise the free or front end of the link N, the cam-lever K is used, by means of which lever the inner end of the link can be pressed down more or less and the front or outer end thus adjusted correspondingly. The upper end of the lever K is of such weight as to keep the inner or lower end raised when said lever is not in use.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with the draw-head A, having the shoulder M and the apertured flange O, of the lever F, pivoted in a slot on the top of the draw-head and provided with the edge J, and the fork H, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with a draw-head, of a lever pivoted in the same and provided with a fork on its swinging end, and ofacam-lever for adjusting the link, the cam-lever being pivoted on the lever provided with the fork, substantially as herein shown and described.
0 A LVI N K EELER.
