O. M. WHITMAN.
RBFRIGBRATOR.
No. 337,909. Patented Mar. 16, 1886.
UNITED STATES PATENTv OFFICE.
ORRIN MILO VHITMAN, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
REFRIGERATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,909, dated March 16, 1886.
Application filed October 19, 1885. Serial No. 180,271. (No model.)
T0 all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ORRIN MILO WHITMAN, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Refrigerators; and I do hereby declare the same to be described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure lis a front elevation, Fig. 2 a transverse and median section, Fig. 3 a horizontal section, and Fig. 4 an end elevation, of a refrigerator containing my invention, the nature of which is defined in the claims hereinafter presented. Fig. 5 is an end view of one of the butter-rkin-holding chambers as open, the chamber represented in Fig. 2 being shown as closed.
In the said drawings,A denotes the case of the refrigerator, it having in its upper part a chamber, B, for holding ice. This chamber extends from one to the other end of the case, and is provided at one of such ends with an opening, a, and a door, b, thereto, (see Fig. 4,) such opening being for the admission of ice into the chamber. Immediately1 below the said ice chamber or receptacle there is a series of separate chambers, O, each of which has in its front an opening, c, provided with a door, D, that is pivoted so as to be capable of being turned upward to close the opening, or downward into an inclined position, so as to uncover the opening. From this door two racks, d, project into the chamber of such door, such racks being for a bar, e, laid in them. On this bar and against the door is a butter-firkin, E, or other vessel for holding the material or liquid, whether it be butter, milk, or other matter or matters, to be kept cool.
Through the bottom of each chamber C there is an opening, f, provided with a Valve or door, g, that is hinged to such bottom, and there is also in the top of the chamber another opening, h, providedwitha door, The space k directly over such opening h freely communicates with the upper part ofthe icereceptacle. The door ,hinged at its rear, has an arm, k, projecting from it and connected to one of the racks by a cord or wire, Z, such rack being also connected with the lower door, g, by a cord or wire, m, which may be either elastic or inelastic, lengthwise of it.
When the door D of the chamberis closed, both of the doors or valvesg and i will be open, as represented in Fig. 2, and cool air from theicereceptacle will flow freely through the chamber C; but when the door D is open and inclined, as shown in Fig. 5, both of the doors or valves g and fi will -be in position to close their openings, so as to prevent cool air from escaping from the case through the chamber O of such door D.
In rear of the ice-receptacle is a passage, n, for the air to pass from the spaceo over the said receptacle into the chamber or space 1) below the several chambers O, such space p being for holding matters to be kept cool. In the front 0f the case is a doorway, q, opening into the chamber or space p, such doorway being provided with a door or doors, lr, for closing it.
When either door D is opened into an inclined position, the iirkin, tub, or vessel resting against it will be tipped into a like position, so as to enable its cover t0 be removed, and the contents to be exposed and access thereto to be had. Should the vessel be a jug holding a liquid, the door, with suchjug resting on it, may be turned into an inclined position for the liquid to escape from it into a pan or receptacle. From the above it Will be seen that to obtain any part of the contents of thejug or firkin there will be no necessity of removing such jug or firkingfrom the chamber or its door.
A refrigerator thus made is highly useful Afor keeping butter, cream, or milk in a cool state. The racks projecting from each door D enable their bar to be adjusted in them as the length of the tlrkin or vessel supported on it may require in order to bring the top or cover of the said lirkiu or vessel to its proper altitude relatively to the top of the door.
I do not claim a counter provided with a series of bins adapted to :tit in recesses in such j counter and provided with trunnions to enter curved grooves, all as shown in the United States Patent No. 222,816. Nor do I claim a kitchen-cabinet provided with such bins, as represented in the United States Patent No. 209,936. Nor do I claim a refrigerator provided with drawers, each of whose fronts is hinged or applied so as to be capable of being turned from a vertical down into a horizontal position, as shown in the United States Patent Nor do I claim a refrigerator constructed as representedin the United States Patent No. 265,202, in which the door is .pivoted so as to swing horizontally, but has projecting from it no devices for supporting a irkin or vessel, so as to swing outwardly with the door.
l. claimv1. The refrigerator constructed substantially as described-viz., with the ice-receptacle B in its upper portion, the chamber p in its lower part, oneior more intermediate chambers, C, a doorway to each of such chambers, and a door, D,thereto, pivoted so as to be capable of being turned outwardly and downwardly, as set forth, racks or devices in such door for sustaining a bar for supporting a rkin or other vessel, openings in the'top and bottom of the chamber C, and to each of such openings avalve so connected with the door that on such door being opened and turned l outwardly and downwardly into an inclined position both of such openings 4should be closed, but be open when the door is closed, all as set forth.
2. The combination, with a refrigerator having to each of its cooling-chambers a door to open outwardly andV downward as explained, of the racks projecting inwardly from such door and serving to support a bar for sustaining a rkin or vessel arranged with such door, as specified.
3. A refrigerator having one or more cooling-chambers and to each adoor pivoted to open downward into an inclined position and provided with a device or means for supporting a firkin or'other vessel to enable it to be moved by such door from its position within the1 chamber down into an inclined position, all being substantially and for the purpose as set forth.
