WATER-CLOSET CISTERN.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,835, dated March 16, 1886.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK A. J ACOB,& citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful In1- provement in \Vater-Closet Gisterns. of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in that class of water-closet cisterns which are arranged to contain a sufficient amount of water for flushing the bowl, and in which the closing of the discharge-valve is controlled by the amount of water in the cistern.

The objects of my improvement are to arrange the valve through which the water is discharged from the cistern so that by means of simple mechanism not liable to become disarranged the said valve, when opened by the operator, will remain open until a sufficient amount of water has been discharged, and will then be automatically closed, and to prevent the opening of the valve controlling the supply of water to the cistern until the closing of the dischargevalve, as hereinafter fully described.

The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.

Figure 1 represents an elevation of my improved cistern, the tank being shown in section. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the valve,

A is the supply-pipe, to which is attached the inletvalve b, which is controlled by the float d and lever c, in the usual well-known manner.

B is the discharge-pipe, which is coupled to the discharge-valve seat 6.

O is a drop-valve, pivoted between lugs f, rising from the valve-seat. The lug formed integral with the valve 0, and through which the pivot h passes, which hinges the valve to its seat, is ext-ended beyond and above the pivot, between the lugs f, to form a lip, i. Pivoted also between lugs f, above valve 0, is a bell-crank lever, D, one end of which forms apawl,0, adapted to engage the lip i on the valve, and the other end is extended and provided with a float, j.

E is a lever mounted on the top edge of the tank. One end of said lever is connected by the rod is with the free edge of the valve 0, and the other end is provided with a pullrod, Z, which is extended within reach of the operator, or is connected with the closet-seat.

For the purpose of keeping the valve which 5 5 controls the supply of water to the cistern closed until the discharge-valve is closed, thereby preventing a waste of water, a collar, m, having a projecting arm, n, is secured to the valve-rod k in such a position that the arm a will engage and sustain thelever 0 when the valve 0 is raised.

The operation of my device is as follows: Valve 0 being closed, and the tank having been filled with the proper amount of water, '55 the supply-valve is automatically closed by float d and lever c. The outer end of lever E is pulled downward, thus raisingthe discharge-valve, as seen in Fig. 1. The buoyant force of float j holds the pawl 0 in con- 0 .tact with the periphery of lug g on the valve 0, so that when the valve is opened the pawl engages lip t" and holds the valve open when the pull rod Z is released and until the water in the tank falls so low that it ceases to sustain the float j, which then falls and disengages the pawl from lip i,thus allowing the valve to close. \Vhen the valve 0 is opened, arm n engages the lever c, and the float d is thereby sustained when the water recedes until float 9 falls, thereby tripping the pawl o and releasing the valve 0. By this means, the weight of float d and lever c resting on the valve 0, the dischargevalve is closed promptly and securely, and the opening of the supply-valve is delayed until the instant the discharge is closed.

I claim as my invention- 1. In a water-closet cistern, the valve-seat having lugsf, valve 0, having lipi and piv- 9c oted to said lugs, lever D, also pivoted to lugs f and arranged to engage lip t, and float j,

all combined in the manner and for the purpose specified.

2. In a water-closet cistern, the combina- 5 tion,with the inlet-valve I) and lever c, of the discharge-valve O, pivoted to its seat, the buoyed lever D, arranged to engage said discharge-valve when open, and rod k, attached to the dischargevalve and having arm 12, en- IOC gaging lever 0, whereby said lever is sustained by the discharge-valve when open, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
