BED-SPRING.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,806. dated March 9, 1886. Application filed June 29, 1885. Serial No. 170,137. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, SAMUEL K. BUTTER- FIELD, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of Swanton, in the county of Franklin and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Bed-Springs; and I dohereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure l is a top view of a portion of a spring bed -bottom equipped with my improved spring-connections. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a series of the springs con nected by my improved connecting-links. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the improved connecting-links detached, and Fig. 4 is an end view of one of the said links.

The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.

This invention relates to that class of spring bed-bottoms which consist of a series of suitable coiled springs attached to a frame-work of slats; and the invention consists in an improved link for connecting the upper coils of the springs in such a manner that While the said connection shall besufficiently flexible to enable the springs to yield to ordinary pressure the said springs shall be effectually prevented from tilting or upsetting in any direction, and which shall be simple in construction, inexpensive, and easily applied to any bed-springs of ordinary construction.

Vith these objects in view the invention consists in the improved construction of the said connecting-links, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the drawings hereto annexed, A A designate the slats forming the bed bottom or frame, and B B are springs of ordinary construction, which are attached in the usual manner to the said slats.

O O designate my improved connectinglinks, each of which is constructed of a single piece of wire by first bending the same so as to form a centralhorizontal semicircular bow, D, and afterward bending the ends under the said how near the middle of the latter in the shape of two additional bows, EE, the ends of which, together with the ends of the central bow, form the oblong loops F F. The free ends of the bows E E are bent so as to form downturned hooks G G, and the outer ends of the loops F F are bent downwardly, so as to form recesses H H at right angles to the said loops.

In practice the uppermost coils of two adjoining springs are inserted into the loops F F, and forced down into the recesses H H of the same, which are then compressed over the said upper coils, so as to prevent the latter from slipping back into the loops F. The hooks G G at the outer ends of the bows E E are then adjusted and compressed over the uppermost coils of the two next adjoining springs, thus serving to securely connect the uppermost coils of a section or series of four springs. The outer ones of these are then connected in the same manner with those next adjoining, and so on until all of the springs constituting the bed-bottom have been connected.

It will be seen that while the connecting' links are of a flexible nature, they will absolutely prevent the splings connected thereby from tilting in any direction, but will hold them firmly and securely in the desired po sition.

The construction is simple and inexpensive, and my improved connecting-links may be easily adjusted in position upon the springs.

Having thus described myinvention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States A connecting-link for bed-springs, consisting ofa single piece of wire bent to form the three curves E D E, overlapping and crossing one another, as shown, and having the corners of said overlapped and crossed parts turned down to form the loops H, in planes at right angles to the horizontal oblong loops F, as and for the purpose herein shown and specified.
