United States Patent 3,377,035 YARN HOLDER Rosaline Sparr, 21380 Concord, Southfield, Mich. 48075 Filed May 15, 1967, Ser. No. 638,287 Claims. (Cl. 242--139) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A yarn holder for supporting a plurality of balls of knitting yarn in readily accessible position and from which the yarn may be knit directly with a uniform constant tension. The yarn balls are supported upon bobbins which are detachably and rotatably supported upon a common head.
Field of the invention The field of the invention is yarn holders having component parts for supporting various colored knitting yarns.
Summary of the invention A yarn or bobbin holder of the present invention includes a stationary base and a head rotatably mounted on the base with bobbin hangers supported on the head. The hangers are in the form of an elongated arm having one end mounted on the head in pivotal and frictional relation at the other end of the hanger arm, a ball and socket joint is used to support a bobbin upon which the yarn is wound to provide ready access to a selected bobbin. A disc is mounted on the bobbin between the rotable connection and the yarn ball and has a yarn slot to hold the end of the yarn when not in use.
It is an object of my invention to provide an improved yarn holder wherein several bobbin supports are carried on a rotatable head in such a manner that the bobbin supports and bobbins may be moved relative to the head and relative to the supports so a plurality of various colored yarn may be used and readily placed in position for use.
Another object of my invention is to provide an improved yarn holder wherein bobbin supports are detachably carried on the holder. Another object is to provide an improved yarn holder wherein a uniform tension is applied to the yarn as it is knitted.
Other objects of this invention will appear in the following description and appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts in the several views.
011 the drawings FIGURE 1 is a side view partly in cross-section and partly in elevation and embodying features of my invention;
FIGURE 2 is a top plan view of the holder embodying features of my invention;
FIGURE 3 is an enlarged fragmentary side view in elevation disclosing the movable connection between the bobbin and the bobbin hanger; and
FIGURE 4 is an enlarged fragmentary front view in elevation disclosing the movable connection between the bobbin and the bobbin hanger.
Before explaining the present invention in detail, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited in its application to the details of construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, since the invention is capable of other embodiments and of being practiced or carried out in various ways. Also, it is to be understood that the phraseology or terminology employed herein is for the purpose of description and not of limitation.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 10 designates a yarn holder and includes a pedestal base 12 having an upwardly extending portion 14 including a rod 16 and a rotatable head 18. The head includes a vertical portion 18 having a bore 20 which surrounds the rod 16 and the portion 18 rests on the portion 14 and rotates relative thereto around the rod 16. The head also includes an enlarged annular portion 24 which serves to support a plurality of bobbins 28. The bobbins 28 are secured to the annular portion 24 by hangers 30. The hangers 30 extend horizontally from the head portion 24 and include a horizontal portion 34 having a depending leg 36 on one end thereof-which extends into a slot 38 in the head portion 24 with a snug fit so that the hanger leg 36 is in frictional relation with the head portion 24 but may be pivoted relative to the head but held in position after being moved to a desired location by such frictional contact.
The opposite end of the hanger 34 has a bifurcated end 40 with the spaced apart sides 42 having a bore 44 drilled transversely therethrough. The hanger 34 is made of resilient plastic which permits the sides to be flexed outwardly relative to each other. The hanger includes a depending leg 48 on the end opposite leg 36. The leg has a ball 50 on its upper end and this ball is positioned between the sides 42 of the hanger with a portion of each side of the ball extending into the bore 44 to provide a pivotal and rotatable connection between the leg 48 and the hanger 34. Thus the sides 42 of hanger 34 together with the ball 50 of leg 48 provide a ball and socket joint therebetween. Because the sides are flexible the sides 42 may be flexed outwardly to insert or remove the ball 50. The ball 50 is in frictional relation with the flexible sides to restrict the free rotation of the bobbin to provide a slight uniform tension so that the yarn unwinds as it is knitted. This is important because otherwise the knitted product comes out uneven and bumpy.
Each leg 48 carries a bobbin 28 which may be tubular and on which the yarn 58 is wound. Each bobbin may carry a diiierent color yarn and as many hangers and bobbins may be carried by the rotatable head as desired. Further, because the yarn ball is suspended, it does not get dirty as it would tend to when the ball can roll around on the floor or chair. A disc 60 surrounds the leg 48 between the ball 50 and the bobbin 28 and is rotatable relative to these parts and may be detached when the bobbin is detached upon removal of the ball 50 from the sides 42 and then lifted upwardly on the leg 48 and over the ball 50. The disc may be transparent plastic and is provided with V slots 64 to receive and hold the end of the yarn 58 when not in use.
It will be noted that the head portion is provided with a hook which may be used to support scissors 66 or other useful items. The base 12 is provided with vertically extending bores 68 which may be used for receiving needles 70.
From the foregoing it will be noted that I have provided a new and improved yarn holder wherein the head thereof is rotatable and carries a plurality of bobbins so that each bobbin may be moved to the desired position for use and each bobbin may carry a different color yarn. The bobbins are carried on the head by new and improved hangers having movability which permits each bobbin to be moved to a desired usable position and be retained in such position and at the same time appl y a slight uniform tension to restrict the free rotation of the bobbin so that the yarn unwinds as it is knitted and in addition the holder has provisions for carrying other useful items.
While one exemplary embodiment of the invention has been described in detail, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that the disclosed embodiment may be modified. Therefore, the foregoing description is to be considered exemplary rather than limiting, and the true scope of the invention is that defined in the following claims.
I claim:
1. A yarn holder for supporting a plurality of balls of knitting yarn comprising a base, a head member mounted on said base for pivotal movement about a vertical axis, a plurality of support arms mounted on said head member at symmetrically spaced locations about said vertical axis for frictionally resisted pivotal movement about respective vertical axes, each of said arms projecting horizontally outward from said head member, a yarn ball supporting bobbin associated with each of said arms, and cooperable ball and'socket coupling means on the outer end of each arm and on each bobbin for detachably suspending the bobbin from the outer end of the arm.
2. The invention as claimed in claim 1 wherein said ball and socket coupling restricts the free rotation of the bobbin by applying a uniform tension so that the yarn unwinds as it is knitted.
3. Theinvention as defined in claim 2 wherein said ball and'socket coupling comprises spaced apart flexible sides on the outer end of each arm and a ball providing the pivotal and rotatable connection therebetween.
4. The invention as claimed in claim 1 wherein the improvement also comprises a removable disc positioned between said ball and socket coupling and said bobbin.
5. The invention as claimed in claim 1 wherein the improvement alsocomprises a disc positioned between said coupling and said bobbin and rotatable relative to said bobbin and being provided with a yarn slot therein.
