UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GAETANO S. OASTAGNETO, OF DANNEMORA, NEW YORK.
SAD-IRON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters LEatent No. 837,555, dated March 9. 1886.
Serial No. 157,819. No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GAETANO S. CASTAG- NETO, of Dannemora, in the county of Clinton and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Sad-Iron, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved sad-iron which is so constructed that the heat cannot be reflected from the top or handle, and thus cannot pain the hand of the person holding the sad-iron.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be first described and then claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both'the figures.
. Figure l is a longitudinal sectional elevation of my improved sad-iron. Fig. 2is aplan view of the same, parts being broken out.
The cast bottom piece, A, of the sad-iron is of the usual construction, and is provided with a groove, B, in its top along the edge or rim D, that portion 0 of the piece A surrounded by the groove B being slightly lower than the rim D. Asbestus, E, is placed on the part 0 and in the groove B, and a sheet-metal plate, F, having its edges turned up to form flanges G, is placed on the rim, and on the edges of the said flanges G a sheet-metal plate, H, is
placed, having its edges bent down to form flanges J, which rest against the outsides of the flanges G and the rim D.
On the plate Ha hollow sheet-metal handle, K, is formed, provided in its top with apertures K, through which the hot air can escape. Asbestus, E, is placed upon the plate F, and the ends of the'handle K are also filled with asbestus. Screws L are passed through the plates F and H into lugs M, projecting inward from the rim D of the piece A, and having screw-threaded apertures. The upper parts of the sad-iron are all very light and the bot-' tom parts heavy, which greatly facilitates handling the sad-iron. The layers of asbestus prevent the top plate, H, being heated from the bottom piece, A-
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a sad-iron, the combination, with the base part A, of the plate F, having upwardly-projecting flanges G, the plate H, having downwardly-projecting flanges J, the screws L, the hollow handle K, and the asbestus, E, substan tially as herein shown and. described.
GAETANO S. OAS'IAGNETO.
