SUPPORT FOR ROCK-DRILLS.

Beit known that I, HENRY G. SERGEANT, of the city and county of New York, in the State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Supports for Rock- Drills, of which thev following is a specication.
Rock-drills are ordinarily provided withA a drill'back wherein the cylinder is moved longitudinally to feed the drill or bit forward as the work progresses; and this drill-back is clamped in a support, whereby it is held immovable during the drilling operation, but which may be adj usted to change the position and direction of the drill-rod when desired. In certain kinds of work the drill-back is supported by atripod,consisting of two hip-pieces, an interposed body portion or drill-support, and legs which are connected with the hippieces. For other kinds of work the drillback is supported by a clamp which is adjustably secured upon an upright column, or upon an arm projecting laterally from such column.
One feature of my invention consists in a novel construction of the part in which the drill-back is held, Whether it be the body portion of the tripod, or a clamp which is to be secured upon an upright column or an arm projecting therefrom; and another feature of my invention consists in a novel construction of the parts, whereby the side legs of the tripod are adjustably secured to the hip-pieces thereof, so that said legs may be swung iu planes parallel with or at right angles to such hip-pieces, and so that a single bolt serves to secure each side leg in position against swinging in either of said planes when the nutthereon is tightened.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a vertical section through the upper portion of a tripod embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an' elevation thereof, looking toward the left-handof Fig. l. Referring first to the construction shown in Figs. l, 2, 3, and 4, A designates the two hippieces of the tripod, which are parallel with each other,and between which are arranged the body portion B of the tripod, and a sleeve, C, which forms the upper portion of the hack leg, O. The sleeve C has conical end portions, which tit in correspondinglyconical trunnionbearings, a, in the hip-pieces A, and the sleeve is secured against turning relatively to the hippieoes byacentra-l bolt, b, which passes through the sleeve and hip-pieces, as best shown in Fig. 3, and by which the swinging ofthe back leg, O, in a plane parallel with the hip-pieces is controlled.
The body portion B of the tripod extends between the hip-pieces, andis provided at the end with conical trunnions b,which lit in correspondingly-ceneri trunnionbearings a in the hip-pieces A, as best shown in Fig. 3.
D designates a bolt, which extends through the body B, and also thronghthe hippieces, and is provided at its end or ends with a nut or nuts, c, by tightening which the trunnions b may be brought to atight bearing in the trunnion-bearings a,and the turning or swinging ofthe body B relatively to the hip-pieces A bev controlled. On the outer side of each hip-piece A is ajournal or trunnion, A,Which is surrounded by a band, E, said band being split or divided at d, as best shown in Fig. 4. I n each band is a conical trunnion-bearing, d', which receives a conical trunnion, e, upon the head of the side leg, F, as best shown in Fig. 4, and each side leg and t-he band E, with which it is connected, are secured in place by a bolt, e', extending through the divided portions ofthe band E, and also through the head IOO the side leg. F, may also be swung relatively to the band E in a plane at right angles to the hip-pieces. hen the bolt e is tightened, the swinging of the side leg in either of these planes is prevented bythe clamping of the band E around the trunniou or journal A', and by the clamping of thetrunnion e in thetrunnien-bearing d.
G, Fig. 3. represents a portion ot the drillback, which has a circular dovetailed projection, (1, and the body portion B ofthe tripod is provided with a fixed jaw, 7i, and a movable jaw. 71.',which are both dovetailed or beveled,and by which the eireular dovetailed projection g may be clamped to the support or body B, so as to seeure the drill in position. The movablejaw 7i of the clamp is Formed upon a lever, H,\\'hieh is `fnlerumed at 7i?. and by means of a holt. I, may he held and adjusted in the body portion orsupportB. so as to cause the movable jaw 71,', in eonneotion with the ixed jaw 71, to Clamp and hold the eylindrie dovetailed projection g on the drill-back G.
As best shown in Figs. l and 2, the bolt I has a T-shaped head, i, and the body B is cored out at b2, so that the bolt I. afteritsnut i is removed, may be inserted through the body and through the hole it, provided for it in the lever H, and then by applying and tightening the nut i', the lever II may be drawn up in a proper position in the body and the movable jaw held with Clamping force therein, the T-shaped head t' of the bolt I coming to a bearing against shoulders b3 in the body B.
Referring now to Figs. 5, G, and 7. J designates a collar or clamp split or divided at j, and having its divided ends connected by a bolt, 7u. By tightening or loosening the bolt 7c the collar J may he clamped upon an upright column or au arin projecting therefrom, or may be loosened, so that it may turn upon or slide along said arm or eolunin. The elalnp or divided collar J is provided with a fixed beveled or undercut el-.inipingjaw, 71 and a correspondingly beveled or undereut movable clamping-jaw, 71.', which latter is formed 'upon a lever, H, fuleruined by a bolt, It, and lnrving in it a hole or opening, h3. for the reception of a clamping-holt, I. The eollarorelanip J is cored out at the front. at b2, so th'at when the nut t" of the bolt I is removed the latter can he introdueed from the front of the clamp J through the opening h3 in the lever I-I, and the T-shaped head will then come to a bearing against shoulders b, provided in the body or Clamp J. By tightening the nut i7 on the holt I the movable clamping-jaw h maybe moved relatively to the lixed jaw 7L, so as to Clamp or reljusting the lever and movable jaw relatively to the ixed jaw, sullistantially as herein described.
2. In a support for a rook-drill, the combination, with a clamp or body having a fixed jaw upon its face. oi' a movable jaw earried by a lever ll'uli'rumed to the clamp or body, and a bolt for adjusting thelever and niovablejaw relatively to the clamp or body and xed jaw, the clamp or body being cored out so that tho bolt may be inserted through it from the face', and having shoulders agaiast which the head of the bolt bears, substantiallyv as herein described.
3. In a drill-tripod, thh combination, with a body provided with a clamp in which the drill-back may be secured, and hip-pieces having projecting journals or trunnions, of ydivided bands fitted to said journals or tronnious, and iront legs pi \otcd to the bands, whereby provision is afforded for the swinging ot the front legs in planes. parallel with and transverse to the hip-pieces, substantially as herein described.
It. In a (.lrill-tripod, the combination, with a body provided with a clamp, wherein the drill-bank may be secured, and hip-pieces having projecting journals or trnnnions A, of' the divided bands E, surrouniling said journals or trunnions, the side legs, F, and the bolts e', whereby the side legs are pivoted to said bands and the bands clamped npon the journals or trunnions, substantially as herein described.
5. In a. drill-tripod, the eoinbination, with a body provided with a clamp in which a drillbaelc may he seein-ed, and hip-pieces provided with. projecting journals or trunnions A', having cirelnni'erential grooves at', ofthe divided bands E, surrounding said journals or truunions. the side legs, F, and the bolts e', which project into the grooves o, and whereby the side legs are pivoter-l to said bands and the bands clamped upon thejournals 0r trnnnions, substantially as herein described.
