BUTTON-FASTENER PACKING-CASE.

- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,520, dated March 9, 1886.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, FRANCIS H. RICHARDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Button-Fastener Packing-Cases, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to cases to be used for packing the buttonfasteners (and others similar thereto) which are shown in United States Patent No. 314,684, dated March 31, 1885, the object being to provide an improved case for holding such fasteners in a row, and from which they may be conveniently discharged into the magazine of a button-setting machine.

To this end theinvention consists in the improvements hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of thisspecification, Figure 1 is a plan View of a packing-case embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a side view of the said case. Fig. 3 is an end view of the same, drawn in projection to Fig. 2. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are respectively a plan, side, and end view of a modified form of the case filled with fasteners. Figs. 7, 8, and 9 are similar views of asecond modification.

Similar characters designate the same parts in all the figures.

The principal parts of my improved packing-case are two similar adjustably-connected strips or bars, A and B, which on their inner faces have formed in them a groove, 3, for receiving the end 4, Fig. 6, of the head of the button-fastener 2. At one end the bars are, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, connected by pivot 7, cars 5 and 6 being formed on the bars for that purpose whenever these are made, as in the drawings, too narrow to overlap each other. At the other end said bars are detachably connected by an ordinary spring-catch, 8, formed on bar B and overlapping the end of bar A, or vice versa; orthe bars may be detachably connected by other kinds of catches, a Variety of which, of suitable construction, are well known to mechanics.

By unfastening the catch the case may be opened, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, to discharge the fasteners contained therein.

The above-described construction of the case may be modified in various ways without departing from my invention. One such modification is fully shown in Figs. 4, 5, and 6. Here each bar has at each end an ear which, on bar A, are designated by 10, and on bar B by 11. These ears are connected by pivots l2, and may thus be adjustably held with sufficient force to retain in place the bars A B by friction only, either closed, as shown by solid lines, or unclosed, as shownby dotted lines, in Fig. 6. By this arrangement the bars are always parallel, each end swinging on its pivot at the same time.

Another modification is illustrated by Figs. 7, 8, and 9. One bar, A, is here furnished at each end with a slide, 14, which fits beneath a clasp, 15, which is formed on the other bar, B. Slides 14 may have a stop, 16, to prevent the bars from separating too far when they are unclosed. The position of the parts when holding the fasteners 2 is shown in Fig. 9.

These severalmodifications of the devices for holding together grooved bars I consider substantially equivalent, and I intend by my first claim to cover the packingcase, whichever way may beused for connecting the bars.

Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. The improved buttoiriastener packingcase herein described, it comprising two bars grooved on their inner sides to clasp the fasteners, said bars being provided with adjustable connections, substantially as described, whereby they may be closed to retain or separated to discharge simultaneously a string of fasteners, substantially as set forth, and for the purpose specified.

2. The improved button-fastener packingcase herein described, it comprising grooved bars A B, said bars being pivotally connected at one end and detachably connected at the other, substantially as set forth, and for the purpose specified.
