NEWSPAPER-FILE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,366, dated March 9, 1886.

Application filed June 29, 1885. Serial No. 170,170.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. BORDEN, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Newspaper-Files,

IO papers on file, and permit the opposite pages of each sheet to remain together and be extended at one side of the file or holder, so as to be read consecutively,instead of promiscuously mingled with the other pages of the dif r 5 ferent papers in the file as heretofore constructed of two rods only; and it consists of the construction, combination, and arrangement of a series of holding-rods,as hereinafter more fully described, and set forth inthe claims. 1

Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my invention with a series of papers on file. Fig. 2 represents a cross-section of the same. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of the file in a modified form.

A represents a series ofround rods of wood, more or less in number, or from three to seven rods, as occasion may require, or corresponding to the number of newspapers or sheets desired to be held or retained in the file at the same time. These rods, being of uniform size and length,are held together in position for use at theirlower endsby an elastic rubber-tube, B, which alsoserves asahandle. When theseveral papers or newspaper-sheets-G have been placed in position, a single newspaper at a time, the upper ends of the rods are held together in position by means of the elastic rubber band or ring E being slipped on over the ends, holding all the rods in position with each other, as shown.

When it is. desirable to use a number of rods-say six or seven-then Iemploy a center rod, P, against which the surrounding series have a hearing, as shown. Thus it will be seen and understood that each rod Aforms a file in connection with the adjacent rods and the elastic bands B and E, which inclose or surround the series of rods, thus forming a single device or union of files.

It will be seen in Fig. 1 that each rod A is designated by a different day of the week, so that as each days paper of the week have been placed within the file beneath the corresponding designated rod through the week, and it is desired to consult any particular days newspaper, it may be instantly found upon that side or portion of the file indicated upon that rod corresponding with the day of the week soughtas, forinstance, Monday.

When the file is completely filled day by day, the previous weeks newspaper of the same day of the week may be removed from that rod and the one of the latest publication, or that mornings paper, substituted, by simply removing the said elastic rubber band or ring E, when the desired paper is released and removed, and the new paper inserted with the central fold beneath the rod, and the rubber ring replaced, as before, thus retaining several days newspapers upon the file all of the time, without liability of disarrangement of those remaining when the change is made, as the tube B serves to retain the rods in parallel position and in contact with the papers between them, so as to prevent their being displaced during the operations of removing and replacing the daily papers.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is-- g 1. A newspaper-file consisting of a series of parallel rods, A, held in position at one end by an elastic tube, B, and at the other end by a rubber ring, E. as set forth.

2. A newspaper-file consisting of a series of parallel rods, A, surroundingacentral rod, P, and held in position at one end by a tube,

B, and at the opposite end by a ring, E, as described.

3. A newspaper-file consisting of a series 0 of parallel rods, A, provided with indications of the days of the week, and surrounding a central rod, P, and held in position at one end by an elastic ring, E, and at the opposite end by an elastic tube or ring, B, as and for the purposes set forth.
