J. L. SMITH.
HOUSEHOLD PRESS.
No. 336,956. Patented Mar 2,1886
WITNESSES ATTORNEY N. PETERS. Phulo-Lhhugrnphnr. Wuhlngtnn. D. C.
.. NITED STATES FICEQ HOUSEHOLD PRESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 336,956, dated March 2, 1886.
A pplication filed July 25, 1885.
.To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPHINE L. SMITH, acitizen of the United States, residing at Davenport, in the county of Scott and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Household Presses; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
' clear, and exact description of the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to household presses for various domestic uses; and its object is to provide a conveniently-arranged implement, whereby the housewifes labor and physical strength may be economized while being used in the most effective manner.
It consists in the various parts and combinations hereinafter described, and is so constructed that by a slight and easily-made change of some of the movable parts, the press may be used for a mop or floor-cloth wringer, or for the pressing of juices from fruits, straining lard, honey, &c., or for cheese-pressing, sausage-stuffing, or the like, without stooping the body or straining the muscles of the arms and back.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section showing my invention as arranged for a mop or floorcloth wringer. Fig. 2 is a top view showing the invention arranged for sausage-stuffing. Figs. 3, 4., and 5 show the changeable attachments for use in fruit and cheese pressing, straining, 810.; Figs. 6 and 7, the attachments for sansagestuffing. Figs. 8 and 9 show the pressureblock and press-head attachment with rubber faces for mop or cloth wringing.
Upon a platform, A, which may be fortyfonr inches in length, I construct a water-tight box, a, of, say, sixteen inches in width by twelve inches deep. A small roller or caster, b, is aflixed to the forward end of the platform, for the purpose of facilitating the locomotion of the implement. The ends of the water-box are designated by the letters 0 c". The sides d d of the water-box are prolonged at the base, and form abutments to support the press-head e. The rod f serves to brace together more firmly the sloping portion of the sides forming the abutment supporting the presshead. A handle, is .affixed to another brace crossing the tops of the sides at the back of the press-head. This handle serves to lift Serial No. 172,670.
(No model.)
the implement when it is to be carried from one place to another. Similar handles may also be attached to the side pieces, if desired. The press-head is provided withan aperture, h, in which the mortar and spout i, Fig. 7, are inserted when the implement is to be used for sausage stuffing. Pressure levers k k are pivoted to each side of the base at Z, and attached at their ends by the cord-roller m. The cord at, Wound upon this roller, passing over the pulleys 0 0" in the arm of each lever, and through the holes r r in the presshead, extends around and holds in place the 6 changeable pressure-block p. The pressureblocks 19 p 12" are provided with slots 8 at thesides for this cord. They are also notched at their lower corners, s, so as to fit into the water-box and rest upon its sides. The press- 7 head attachments q q are also provided with similar slots for the cord and notches for the water-box, and have also a hooked flange, 1), upon their upper parts, whereby they may be hung upon and attached to the press-head.
When the machine is arranged for mopw'ringing, the head attachment q and pressureblock 10 are used, as shown in Fig. 1. When set for sausage-stuffing, as shown in Fig. 2, the mortar and spout i are inserted in the presshead, and the pressure-block 19",with the push it affixed to it, is used. This pressure-block is provided with channels, as shown in Fig. 5, and'may be used without the push t for the pressing of the juices from grapes and fruit. Another pressure-block, 19, being provided with a colander or strainer, may also be used for this purpose, as well as the straining of honey, 850., in connection with the head 'attachment and push u. (Shown in Fig. 4..) This pressure-block 11' may have a pan or hoop for cheese inserted in place of the strainer.
A bucket, w, or vessel of any kind may be set in the water-box or behind the press-head to receive the juices from the matter under 95 pressure. The ends of the cord wound upon the roller m are attached to the end of the treadle w.
The implement is operated, when the object to be pressed has been placed between the too pressure-block and the press-head attachment, by the weight of the foot or body upon the treadle, which draws down the levers and tightens the cord passing around the pressureblock. When a slow or gradual pressure is desired, suitable weights may be placed upon the treadle and increased or diminished, as occasion may require.
I claim as of my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent '1. In a household press, the combination of the treadle, lever, and cords with the press head and frame and changeable pressureblock, substantially as described, and vfor the purposes set forth.
2. Ahousehold press provided with changeable pressure-blocks andpress-head attachments, substantially as shown and described, and. for the purposes set forth.
3. The changeable attachments for a house-
