Broom.
Patented Nov. 5, |861.
No.V 33,686.
` versely tothe iirst section.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. TOWERS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO VINFIELD S. BARD, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVED BROOM.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 33,656, dated November 5, 186].
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. TOWERS, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in House-Brooms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings of the same, making part of this specification.
Figure l is a vertical section of a broom constructed after the improved plan. Fig. 2 is another vertical section of the same trans- Fig. 3 is a front view of the curved and perforated strip of leather or plate (represented in Figs. l and 2 with tampico grass attached) detached from the broom. Fig. 4 is a cross-section of the same.
Similar letters in the figures refer to corresponding parts.
In the usual method of forming housebrooms by successively overlaying around and securing to the handle a series of layers of broom-corn it is obvious that the broom is defective in the particular of lacking density or body where it is most required, from the fact of the space occupied by the handle and the divergent and expanded character of the broom-corn from the handle downward, causing the extreme lower part to be thinly supplied with the material.
Now, the object of my invention is to remedy this defect by inserting and sewing in the central part of the broom a perforated strip of leather or other suitable material having an additional body of tampico grass, South American bass, or other like material attached to it in such a manner as to display and diverge the latter downward in the central part, and thus give increased body.
The broom-corn A surrounding the handle B, composing the usual house-broom, is representedj by black lines in Figs. l and 2 of the drawings. Immediately below the handle B of the broom isrepresented a thin curved strip of leather or plate C, corresponding in its curvature with the course of the stitches.
This strip or plate C is perforated near its lower part with a single or a series of slots D, through which are strung and doubled, as represented in Fig. 2, before it is inserted in its central position in the broom, tampico grass, South American bass, or other flexible and elastic material, which is bent or doubled over the lower part of the strip or plate C, as before stated, and spread out over the saine and secured iu this position by twine, if necessary, so that its several strands shall have a proper divergent state downward. When the grass or other material is thus spread and attached to the strip or plate O, and after the broom-corn or other material used is bound by the wire to the handle and in a measure flattened in the usual jaws, the said strip or plate C, with its attachments, is inserted in its position and there sewed by the act of securing the broom tlatwise, as heretofore, the stitches of twine above and below the strip or plate O, as represented, or through it, if desired, serving to hold the same firmly in place. From the foregoing it will be perceived that the additional body of material secured in the central part of the usually-arranged broom material secured directly to the handle not only serves to give increased body to the broom at the Very part where most desired, but that it also gives increased elasticity and durability to the same, while the strip or plate C gives a most desirable rigidity and firmness to the iiatness of the broom at the point immediately below the lower end of the handle. Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Embodying and securing in the central part ot' the broom below the handle a curved rigid strip or plate O and divergent body or bodies of tam pico grass, South .American bass, or other like material, substantially in the manner, and for the purpose herein set forth..
